Forza 3 vs Gran Turismo 5 Comparison Thread of John, Chapter 11, Verse 35

Guys, stop this nonsense, please.

The pic is not representative of GT5 at all, but compression isn't the problem.
Compression and focus are not the excuse for aliasing, low resolution textures and low poly models.

It's just a pic taken with the purpose of making the game look bad, but it's not representative of what GT5 looks most of the time. That's all.

And that standard car GT5 pic above might look bad, but if you squint it can still look real.

Can we go back to celebrating both games and posting good pics of both now ? : (

I'd say it can be fairly representative of a good chunk of real gameplay - especially so when you factor in standard cars. Even the uncompressed captures posted a few pages back aren't really that hot. I loaded the game up last night expecting to be blown away again, but time has not been kind to it. Special Stage in the rain used to be the track that gif dreams were made of, but all I see when I play it is the low-res fireworks, poor shadow effects, framerate drops and tearing at the top of the screen (with one car on track..) and little texture filtering.

GT5 - and Forza 4 too for that matter - both look pretty assy during gameplay. I suppose they are par for the course for decrepit consoles though. They only manage to look so good during a replay or photo mode, which not surprisingly the majority of the screens in this thread are of.

Don't worry I will alleviate your sore eyes:

The point is to make GT5 look as bad as possible. Same reason why that low-res standard car is posted all the time (even though it's been patched).

Funny thing: I looked at page 100 of this thread, from 2010. Screens and arguments are exactly the same, but the people posting them aren't the same.

Found this gem

Totally agree with this man.

You can post screens and gifs till the cows come home, but the fact of the matter is visuals while playing are different.
When a newbie takes a look in this thread for the first time, his first reaction is probably 'wow, godamn!'
So he goes out and buys GT or Forza only to realize 'WTF?'

Well, to be fair both tittles looks pretty good for 8 year old consoles. There aren't many 60fps titles in both consoles and GT5 IQ is pretty good.

But I agree new consoles can't come soon enough.

No, they look fine. I'm just saying that in comparison to all the car porn posted in the thread, in motion visuals is another story.

I'm not a graphics nut, but i'm wondering, what's realistically possible next gen?

Anyone care to speculate?

No matter what goes on in here. I can stick GT5 on my 60" Samsung LED TV, and it looks fucking stunning. It's great for wowing guests. No other game I show people has the same gasp factor of GT5.

That's what matters. Not pictures, not gifs, not the sound of the fucking gearbox lol. All that is just nit-picking and pointless to me. But still damn amusing.

You believe the sound of the vehicles is nitpicking?

I think Project Cars is a good starting point, but still hope that PD/Turn10 can do much better:

Not even God of War 3 or Ascension?

That's the PS3 game that makes people go all "WOAHH!"

They look good. But they still look "gamey".

Sticking someone on Tokyo with a nice premium car and they can't believe their eyes (I love showing casuals stuff like that :p The reactions are worth it)

To someone who listens to music instead. Yes lol.

It looks better to you? lol

So crappy capture card = default brightness in the game?

Your card isn't crappy, your picture looks much sharper. The PS3 in-game capture that Wax Free Vanilla is using is applying a blur over the whole image for some reason.

Sure, that's fine. Not everyone enjoys listening to their cars when racing in the game. Me however, I revel in the sound of a crisp straight six screaming at 7000 rpm's.

Crushing blacks is pretty crappy imo.

Also you guys seem to be forgetting the game has ingame sharpening options. The PS3 Capture tool doesn't blur anything.

I don't know how PD dosn't realise that the solution to the sound engines in the next GT's is very close(NFSW sound) to them

lol....W.T.F!!??!!

Hopefully, in a few generations time, we will have visual damage on this level:

..
Seriously, what's the story with both games' damage model?
I mean, other games manage to go a little crazier with damage yet PD and Turn 10 are restricted?
Someone enlighten me..

Playing around with the lighting to find a nice balance.[/QUOTE]

The clipped shadows don't do it for me :/

I don't know what it is about other games, ever since GT3 nobody can ever match GT's realistic lighting and replays. I forget the name but there's a new racer coming to PC this year which looks really good but I wonder if it would've looked like that on PS3-level hardware back when GT5 first came out

Right, they don't want their cares to look like death machines.

They don't allow damage that intrudes on the passenger compartment or that would stop the car completely (like bent/missing wheels).

On another note, I haven't done any photos for ages in FM4 but decided to give it a quick go and where can I upload pictures to avoid extra compression?

Costs a couple dollars to get a month membership on Photobucket and you don't get any compression.

The filtering in the trees are better in his picture too. Don't know maybe I didn't get access to this special GT5 edition.

Most utilitarian/street vehicles would already see car totalling damage at 30-40kph accidents, and life threatning damages at higher speeds (for non "modern" cars).
So I never understand when people ask for "proper damage models", if they want actual body deformation/damage, or mechanical problems from wear (and minor collisions).

Because the first would be fun if they went "game over" on you.
'Your driver sustained 3 fractures in his left leg, due a 40kph crash. Wait 3 (in game) months til recovery."
If you die, it deletes your save.

I think it would be cool if you could setup a backup car that you can use when your main car is totaled.

Every single shadow at mid to close range in GT5 dynamically cast off the cars looks like what's in that picture. It's a problem specific to the game. If you are unable to pause a replay to go into photo mode, and look at the car and see shadows blockier than the PS2 version of Splinter Cell, then you aren't willing to see what's in front of you. That problem is particular to GT5, and it hurts the presentation in an unfortunate way.

Re: the horrible-looking standard cars, considering that's roughly 80 percent of the game's car content (I know some look much better, but to pretend they're fine overall is just wrong) I think it's fair to say that's representative of the game itself.

I just want to call out the idea that Forza 4 only looks good when the visuals are "hidden behind filters" or "have contrast blown out to unrealistic levels."

[Initiate sarcasm protocol]:

Yes, all those terribly and unrealistically High Contrast Forza photos. Those ones where the whole car is hidden. Certainly not in daylight. Just awful, right? (To be clear, I'm not saying GT5 isn't gorgeous. I've posted GT5 highlight galleries in here too.)

Dat Forza lighting where shadows are pure black and Global Illumination does not exist. Better crank up the white value to compensate.
