Rivalry between the two companies produced what is possibly the most notorious console war in history. Nintendo would never achieve market leadership in Europe and did not manage to do so in the US until 1994, benefiting from the SNES's superior graphical capabilities and Sega's unsuccessful launch of the Sega CD.
see. THESE DON'T INCLUDE WALMART DO THEY?

Notice in 1994 how much the SNES was outsold by the Genesis (according to these NPD figures: which may have been lower in sales for Nintendo back then [maybe no walmart]) even tho that was the year Nintendo supposedly made a comeback with Donkey Kong Country.

PSone: 28,076,677
N64: 17,148,061
Saturn: 1,281,123 (WTF did the Saturn really bomb this much in the US?)
SNES: 5,729,831
Genesis: 8,188,508

Is it possible the Genesis and SNES numbers were switched around? I do find it likely that Genesis sold more than SNES in 1995.

No I don't think there switched because when the Genesis 3 was released in 1998 there is an increase in sales over '97, which wouldn't make sense if it were the SNES because there's no increase in '98 over '97.

Ah, right.

Still, the SNES managed to sell 17 or so million in the US (like N64 actually) so I'd be damned if Nintendo sold like 9 Million of them right away (taking into account unaccounted sales and such).

Total sales figures:

NES: 61,780,000
Nintendo SNES: 49,020,000
Nintendo 64: 32,930,000
GameCube - 18.76 million (as of june 2005)

Seems like Nintendo has been on the decline ... forever. I thought the SNES sold more, it felt like it was the undisputed king, at least here in Europe.

The GB/GBC split was 69.42/49.27 according to a thread here a while ago. I notice you're missing the Dreamcast, it sold 10.6 million according to the same thread.

Sigh...the poor Jaguar. As if it wasn't a big enough failure, this list is all over the internet with it at 10,000 units. The Jaguar sold somewhere between 350,000 and 500,000 worldwide, not a measly 10k--it sold 10k in Japan alone, if I recall.

I don't have any good links--I read that in a magazine back in the day (wasn't much of an internet then), but here's a page that claims that Tempest 2000 for the Jag sold 350,000 copies (I remember reading that they _produced_ that many, not sold them--that
would be one hell of a tie ratio):

http://www.heartbone.com/comphist/Atari.htm

And here's another that claims "the german mag 'Megafun' says that 350000 Jaguars were sold in the USA and 50000 in Europe". Megafun is certainly not where I read it back then, but there you go.

http://www.atariarchives.org/cfn/12/08/0015.php

The 10k number for Japan, I can't prove, just know I read it somewhere, but I do have it in print somewhere in my Next Generation magazine collection, that the Jag sold ~1,000 units at launch in Japan, so it's not hard to believe it would reach 10 someday. It might be in Next Gen that I read the 500,000 estimate, but I don't have any way of finding that without reading every page of every issue...

I think there were around 500,000 Jaguars sold total.

Next Generation magazine said several years ago that there were 345,000 copies of Alien vs. Predator sold. So, this game may have reached a remarkable 70% of the Jaguar userbase!

Doubtful - an old EGM issue reported a million copies sold for GEX. (IIRC, October 1995) Surely 3DO sold much more than that?

And that Jag numbers is just laughable. FALSE.

Welcome to GAF 1994 edition. Best viewed with Mosiac 0.01 alpha.

BTW, thanks for those numbers. Quite interesting to see these numbers tho. GO SNES!

There were other versions of Gex, so they might have combined them. But I'm pretty sure I recall 3DO bragging about hitting a million (might have been a projection).

Doubtful. At that point of time, PS and SAT rev hadn't even been announced.

fascinating, I could stare at these stats all night. The 18,000,000 GCNs vs 20,000,000 XBOXs is interesting. Really even with schitty 3rd party support it doesn't look so bad for Nintendo. I'd like to see comparisons between the two separated by region (Japan: NA: EU).

Does anyone have the actual reporting that the Dreamcast WW number was based on? Did Sega put out any sort of report or make some comment at the end that was the basis for this? Or did some anonymous individual post the number and everyone just bought into it?

It would be awesome if someone was able to find/buy from the NPD, monthly hardware sales going back to '94 or earlier. I guess that may be asking too much. :D But if anyone has any sales numbers from before 2002 by all means please share it!

But what's even more interesting is how the N64 barely had a fraction of the third party games the GC did and it sold more than 12 million.

Probably because the N64 went up against the PS1 for most of its life. While the GC went up against the PS2 and Xbox.

Yeah, GC and Xbox pratically split up what was like N64's marketshare while Playstation 2...well...stayed Playstation with it' s marketshare at a faster pace.

Found this nugget on the CD-i.

According to figures presented by Philips at a special press event held at the
Winter Consumer Electronics Show (WCES), there are currently 300,000 CD-i
units in consumers' hands
. The goal for '94 is to bring the total number of
units sold to 1,000,000! If this is reached, CD-i will be established at a
viable growth point to insure its continued success. From the quality of titles
shown at WCES, and based upon the newer value priced players being offered,
this goal looks attainable. The reason for this growth is that Philips is
finally pushing CD-i as an entertainment system, rather than as an edutainment
and infotainment product only.

http://www.textfiles.com/games/guru1-1.txt

Alot of sales news is discussed at CES's. Maybe searching through those you can find elusive Jaguar and 3DO sales.

From the same pdf, intstalled base were also given at the beginning of 1994. An easy calculation gives us the totals at the end of 2001:
NES 25,700,000 + 427,014 ~ 26,100,000
SNES 4,800,000 + 5,729,381 ~ 10,500,000
GEN 7,600,000 + 8,175,348 ~ 15,800,000

WTF?

The SNES sold 46 Million worldwide, 16 Million of which were in Japan. So 20 Million SNESes in Europe?

Something is clearly up here, unless Canada/WalMart *really* rock for Nintendo.

I know. I think these numbers are too low overall. Perhaps the pdf says something more about the them. I don´t have time to read it now though.

As if those sales numbers for the Saturn didn't look bad enough, it's even more embarassing that its sales numbers were never high enough to pass the Genesis in any year.

There were plenty of competitors all along. Atari, Sega, NEC, Atari again, 3DO.

Although it would be fair to say Nintendo's share declined as their core audience grew up, they lost their monopoly power, and as they fell back on conservative strategies and failed to move with the market.
