Hail to the KING baby
Mandatory auto-renew should be illegal and mandatory auto-renew that you can't cancel online or at least over the phone should be a capital offense.

Consumerist emailed.

It should be noted that this whole thing puts ECA on the complete bottom rung of the "free trial" scam ladder, below deviant pornsites involving farm animals, and even AOL. *gasp*

Also emailed a long and detailed post to them. Hopefully something happens.

I took off auto-renew before they changed their site. Now that they've changed it I'm not sure how it works. To be honest I am not even sure if I am safe or not. They're saying that the cancel auto renew button was a glitch that was never intended to be on their website which is bullshit of the highest order.

But this is what my account says

Expiring roles

ECA Full Membership
This role will expire on 10/02/2010 - 15:06

I never canceled the auto renew when the "functionality" was there, and it says the same thing for me.

Expiring roles

ECA Full Membership
This role will expire on 09/11/2010 - 23:10

My billing address has changed since then, so if they try to recharge it might get declined. Otherwise if there's no solution by 9/11/2010, I will obviously be disputing.

When I signed up, they never asked for a credit card. I checked my account and there is no CC# to be found. Should I still worry?

Yeah my guess is that everybody is in the same boat then. No way to opt out electronically. Everyone who wants out will have to do so via snail mail. I think they're hoping we all just forget about it so they can charge us next year. We can't let this happen. Stay on top of this scummy organization, GAF.

Whats all the uproar about now? I mean yeah, this un-cancelable stuff is total bullshit, but why are people blowing up now? Don't we have another year before having to jump through all these annoying hoops?

I'm pretty lazy, so I can hold off on my outrage for another 9 months or so right?

Then you just have an account on the site and aren't a paid member. If you're a member and can access the members area, they most certainly took your credit card information. Look under "Orders" and see if there's something there.

SOunds like you better start now if you want a 5% chance of it being canceled by then.

I guess these course of events show a couple things.

1) Most of us don't care about the ECA...we just wanted the amazon discount.

2) The hoops ECA has gone through to prevent people from cancelling puts a negative light on them and their mission. Not a good organization to be behind.

1) You're probably correct. I joined the ECA with the free promo code, and after the Amazon deal expired I figured I would just pay again next year to support an organization that was supposed to represent gaming consumers.

2) If they are this underhanded about removing your credit card information, I can't imagine that the organization itself is anything but a scam.

I was the same way. The discount was what made me aware of the org's existence in the first place, and I liked their mission statement. I was willing to pay to be a member on a continual basis, but they have shown what type of organization they really are.

I disabled autorenew by clicking on a button they had back then when I signed up for the 1 year for free. Am I safe?

Ugh, been ages since I used snail mail...

What exactly are we supposed to give them in the letter to cancel anyway? Username?

Well I just finished leaving my BBB complaint. Chances are that it will be ignored, as most scam businesses / charities do. I'll also be firing off a letter to the Consumerist as well. I figure if enough of us do, chances are it will make the front page.

It's ridiculous that after submitting a cancel request via their web form, over the phone, and by post, I can't get them to remove my CC info. It's clear now that the ECA has no interest in the consumers they pledged to support, but rather have outright contempt for them.

I did the auto-cancel as soon as I found out they mangled the amazon thing and Amazon booted their ass. Are people stating these cancels have somehow been invalidated?

The irony is, I was kind of skeptical of these douches from the start and used a Simon gift card Visa that had a 2.00 dollar balance as my card. So it's not like they're gonna get any more money. But they sound douchy enough to send a collection agency. Wish I had taken a print screen of the cancellation.

EDIT: What? How the fuck are they invalidated? What a scummy piece of shit.

I'm glad I never cared about the ECA.

I plan on getting my registered letter out as soon as possible. If you get any update on your end please bump the thread again. I'm betting they won't bother to notify us in any way whether they've actually processed our cancellation requests.

Same for me.

I doubt we have anything to worry about, but if they do try to charge me, I will just dispute it at that time. What is it like $20? For fucks sake. I think I'll somehow go on with my life and survive the ordeal, when and if the time comes.

The option to disable auto-renew never worked so whether you used it or not makes no difference.

I'll be dropping off by the post office during lunch tomorrow to do the same (I don't believe I have to spend my lunch hour taking care of this shit). I'll keep you guys posted, as I specifically ask in my e-mail to have a confirmation in writing about the removal of my credit card.

Check Struct09's post above. He has the same phrase displayed despite never canceling his membership. Also, read this post. If you feel safe after reading that, more power to you. It didn't make me feel great about it, even though I canceled when the option was available as well.

It is only $20, but do you now really trust this organization with your credit card information?

Sure it did. It changed my status screen and I got an additional screen that told I may be ruled ineligible to receive certain promotions because of this status.

Hmm, what should I get the thread title changed to...

"Potential scam with ECA memberships. Read from post #622"?
How about "watch your credit cards, the ECA is on the loose?"
or "ECA to Members: Fuck you"

I don't remember there being an option to disable auto-renew. There was a cancellation button though.

I canceled my account and it said, I may not receive some additional benefits or some bullshit like that.

I think I'm safe now. They've got a Visa gift card with a two dollar balance and I've just gone in and changed my personal info to Ruby Tuby with a made up address. Let them send the collection agency after poor Ruby.

I just read the last page. WOW.

SO glad I didn't give a shit about the ECA or the discount (didn't shop at Amazon) back in September. Sounded too good to be true, anyway.

Oh, yeah, could someone change the thread title? Mods?
