It should be noted that this whole thing puts ECA on the complete bottom rung of the "free trial" scam ladder, below deviant pornsites involving farm animals, and even AOL. *gasp*
WinFonda said:I took off auto-renew before they changed their site. Now that they've changed it I'm not sure how it works. To be honest I am not even sure if I am safe or not. They're saying that the cancel auto renew button was a glitch that was never intended to be on their website which is bullshit of the highest order.
But this is what my account says

Are you sure, I thought it was mandatory somehow.DeVeAn said:When I signed up, they never asked for a credit card. I checked my account and there is no CC# to be found. Should I still worry?

Whats all the uproar about now? I mean yeah, this un-cancelable stuff is total bullshit, but why are people blowing up now? Don't we have another year before having to jump through all these annoying hoops?

I'm pretty lazy, so I can hold off on my outrage for another 9 months or so right?
but i'm soooooo lazyevilpigking said:SOunds like you better start now if you want a 5% chance of it being canceled by then.
If only you had been too lazy to sign up in the first place! You exist in a very dangerous Lazy Zone.bistromathics said:but i'm soooooo lazy
Mrbob said:I guess these course of events show a couple things.
1) Most of us don't care about the ECA...we just wanted the amazon discount.
2) The hoops ECA has gone through to prevent people from cancelling puts a negative light on them and their mission. Not a good organization to be behind.
RedNumberFive said:1) You're probably correct. I joined the ECA with the free promo code, and after the Amazon deal expired I figured I would just pay again next year to support an organization that was supposed to represent gaming consumers.
2) If they are this underhanded about removing your credit card information, I can't imagine that the organization itself is anything but a scam.

So they just went ahead and reactivated autorenew for me?? WTF kind of nigerian scam site is this!!!!!! How do I check exactly if autorenew is still on?ElJuice said:

I plan on getting my registered letter out as soon as possible. If you get any update on your end please bump the thread again. I'm betting they won't bother to notify us in any way whether they've actually processed our cancellation requests.RedNumberFive said:Well I just finished leaving my BBB complaint. Chances are that it will be ignored, as most scam businesses / charities do. I'll also be firing off a letter to the Consumerist as well. I figure if enough of us do, chances are it will make the front page.
It's ridiculous that after submitting a cancel request via their web form, over the phone, and by post, I can't get them to remove my CC info. It's clear now that the ECA has no interest in the consumers they pledged to support, but rather have outright contempt for them.

I doubt we have anything to worry about, but if they do try to charge me, I will just dispute it at that time. What is it like $20? For fucks sake. I think I'll somehow go on with my life and survive the ordeal, when and if the time comes.
