Fuck The Guardian... Put your TOP 50 Best games ever

From my point of view, it would not be very useful to complain about the list of The Guardian's 50 games.
Because it is obvious that it would not have been a "realistic" list, but more commercial or personal.

That said, if I had my own Top 50, it would be my favorite:

1 - Chrono Trigger
2 - Final Fantasy VI
3 - Super Mario World
4 - Pokémon Yellow
5 - Tetris
6 - Final Fantasy IX
7 - Donkey Kong Country
8 - Final Fantasy XV
9 - Dragon Quest VIII
10 - Kingdom Hearts
11 - Super Mario Land
13 - The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time
14 - Tomb Raider 2
15 - Metal Gear Solid
16 - Chrono Cross
17 - Xenogears 1/2
18 - Final Fantasy VII
19 - Super Mario Bros 3
20 - Pokémon Gold and Silver
21 - Dragon Quest XI
22 - Bioshock 1 and 2
23 - Undertale
24 - Crash Bandicoot
25 - Super Street Fighter 2
26 - God of War 3
27 - Valkyrie Profile
28 - Golden Sun
29 - Halo
30 - Final Fantasy X
31 - Shining Force 2
32 - Uncharted
33 - Gears of War
34 - Metal Gear Solid 2
35 - Nier Automata
36 - Final Fantasy XIV ARR
37 - Crash Team Racing
38 - Dark Souls
39 - Zelda Link to the Past
40 - The Witcher 3
41 - Hitman 2 Silent Assassin's
42 - Mortal Kombat 2
43 - Assassin's Creed 1
44 - Resident Evil 3
45 - Dragon Quest V
46 - Ratchet and Clank
47 - Killer Instinct
48 - Halo 3
49 - Age of Empire 2
50 - Gran Turismo 2

Obviously, there are also multiple other games that should be on a list of this type.
This is why they are always based on personal preferences in the end.

I think it makes more sense to critique Guardian than a person's personal list. The Guardian's list will be viewed by millions, your list will be viewed by dozens at best. Their list is compiled by multiple people, yours is just your own taste.

Imagine Guardian mentioning Rapelay.... That name is banned among gaming press. Yet it is mentioned here! Still guardian list is far from balanced. They can't hind their bias towards Japanese games. New mores....

It was tough to narrow down, and I want to comment on all the other picks. GAF has good taste.

I hope some of my favorites get replaced by even better games someday. In no ranked order:

Unreal Tournament - swan-song of arena FPSs. The genre go was too bloated, too sprawling, or didn't have the same level of fine-tuned gameplay.
Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast - story was okay. Multiplayer (even against bots) was amazing. Nar Shadda treets all day.
System Shock 2 - This is my clunky-but-enjoyable survival horror game (some might put RE or Silent Hill here). The RPG stuff and sci-fi is so cool. Can't wait for the remaster.
half-Life - better than half-Life 2. The quintessential single-player FPS experience.
Minecraft - one of my "forever" games. Has been consistently fun for the last 1o years
Descent II - Strikes a perfect balance between flight sim and frenetic arcade shooting.

Super Mario Bros 3 - NES version. My favorite 2D Mario.
Super Mario 3D World - My favorite 3D Mario. Favorite co-op Mario, too.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 + Knuckles - AAA 90s platformer. Every level is memorable.
Ghouls 'n Ghosts - the first arcade games I beat on one credit. The grind was worth it.
Spelunky - still the best "rouguelite"
Commander Keen - PC platforming at its finest.

LoZ: Breath of the Wild - Best 3D Zelda, with the most reasons to come back and enjoy the world.
Metal Gear Solid 4 - The most Kojima MGS game, therefore the best.
Bloodborne - phenomenal action title that I will replay over and over again 'til I expire.
Monster Hunter 4U - big fan of the franchise; this one feels the "coziest" to me
Katamari - never bores me
Wonderful 101 - A character action game with sky-high skill ceiling that I want to keep reaching toward
Dead Space - best sci-fi horror game

Guilty Gear Xrd - favorite fighting game. Let me show you my Potemkin
Soul Calibur - I was gonna say Dead or Alive 2, but nah. This is it. The best 3D fighting game
X-Men vs Street Fighter - Everything I want out of a 2D fighter from the 90s, and all the fat trimmed.

Chrono Trigger - one of the first RPGs I replayed. Lovable characters and hummable music
Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver - my favorite Pokemon. Grew up with Gold and thoroughly enjoy the remakes on DS
A.D.O.M - cryptic, complex, and unfair is how I describe this roguelike. It introduced me to one of my favorite genres.
Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention - endlessly replayable, and the best storyline and cast of characters in the series
Aetolia: The Midnight Age - my most formative online RPG experience
Fallout 1 - LOL you can tell the final boss to kill himself
Puzzle Quest - somehow a great RPG and a great puzzle game at the same time
Mario & Luigi: Partners In Time - most complex Mario RPG game in terms of mechanics.
Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn - I must shed a tear before venturing forth.
Resonance of Fate - goofy, flashy, convoluted Japanese RPG

Dance Dance Revolution (series? not sure I have a favorite home or arcade iteration) -
giphy.gif

DJ Hero 2 - favorite rhythm game because the tracks were original mixes
Patapon 2 - rhythm RPG like manna

Burnout 3: Takedown - stupid early 00s goofball destruction
Demolition Racer: No Exit - stupid late 90s goofball destruction
Crazy Taxi - YA YA YA YA YAAAAA
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - favorite MP racing game

Magical Drop III - Battles over in 5 seconds, sometimes. Fastest puzzle game ever.
Meteos - addictive. I love all the different planets, musical themes, and concepts on display. Timeless treasure of the videogame hobby.
Puyo Puyo Tetris - two of my favorite puzzle games in one

X-COM: UFO Defense - the only "horror strategy" game I'm aware of. Nail-biting and addicting.
Total Annihilation - campaign was so-so, but the multiplayer and skirmish mode, plus the downloadable units, plus the OST
Age of Empires 2 - my favorite RTS campaign with a perfect balance between snappy gameplay and civ simulation.
Medieval Total War - dumping the Risk board in later games was a mistake. This one had just the right level of complexity.

Twinkle Star Sprites - a casual shmup that any person can get addicted to.
Dodonpachi: Daioujou - this game is etched on the inside of my skull. World-class design that deserves 1,000 hours of your time.
Espgaluda - ...or if that sounds like too much of an investment, give this one your time. The perfect "casual" danmaku
Hellfire - childhood favorite that still holds up today.

EDIT: Dang, I realize there are so many more I was forced to leave out. Here's even more pulled directly from the other lists I read through on the thread.

Mount and Blade: Warband
Vanquish
Tekken 3
Shadow of the Colossus
Deus Ex
Wii Sports
Fez
Demon's Souls
Gradius
TMNT IV: Turtles in Time
Dragon's Crown
Nethack
TLOU
Golden Sun

I feel a bit unqualified because I haven't played enough modern games (I'm still missing Dark Souls series and Sekiro for example) but looking at these lists, reminds me there are some real timeless gems that I still love to death.

Trying to organize them in a rigid best to worst would be kind of futile. These just come to mind as my real cream of the crop- S-tier.

Starcraft/Brood War
Smash Bros. Melee
Sonic 2
Mario Bros. 3
Yoshi's Island
Super Mario RPG
Rayman 2 (DC)
Phantasy Star Online
Grandia II (love the battle system)
Ocarina of Time
Link's Awakening
Wargroove (I like it better than Advance Wars, so)
Goldeneye 007
Halo 1 (PC)
Half Life 1 (my most vivid memories are of a 007 Facility map in a LAN while the n64 music looped in Winamp)
Star Wars Rogue Squadron II
Star Fox 64
Kingdom Rush Frontiers (TD genre deserves a rep)
TMNT: Turtles in Time
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow

I guess that's only 20 titles but at least I don't have to pad it with SingStar. I could probably come up with a hundred "mere" A-tier games though (and 1000 B-tier lol)

List bitching is so stupid. Nobody has the authoritative voice when writing a list of what they think are the best games ever made. Just sit down, shut up, and enjoy reminiscing about a bunch of classic games, whether or not you agree. 😋

As for this thread, and I really don’t mean to be so negative, what are random lists of games from people supposed to mean to me? I presume The Guardian at least included reasoning for the picks. I’d like to see why people regard these games so highly, or what their experiences were.

You want my reasoning? Here it is.
These are the games I would definitely pick up again at their release time.

BTW, what were you expecting? Objective lists - each made by different person?

I was expecting a thread worth a shit, rather than everyone rushing to post their own meaningless list, with nobody actually reading any.

What’s more exciting? Fifty random names cited? Or (in a probably smaller list, or just for the top 10) posts saying what those games meant to the poster, and why they’re so great, on an individual basis?

The best games i have ever played are video games that not only produced an incredible sense of enjoyment wen i played them for the first time, but also produce that approximation of enjoyment with varying degrees any time i play them. They also managed to be very, very memorable, extraordinarily re-playable (for example, just their sheer memory gives me incentive to install and play them right now), and this goes without saying that they are eternally "ageless" (i never like using that dismissal, it's incredibly vague and pointless).

The top 10 of the top 50 list, in no order (there's no way in Hell i could ever order them by preference, it would take hours of pondering and self-reflection, and i don't want to do that):
  • Planescape: Torment
  • S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
  • Fallout 2
  • Deus Ex
  • Gothic 2: Gold Edition
  • Heroes of Might & Magic III: Complete Edition
  • Mount & Blade: Warband
  • Phantasy Star 4
  • Super Street Fighter II Turbo Edition
  • Age of Mythology
The rest of the top 50 list:
  • Fallout
  • Fallout: New Vegas - Ultimate Edition
  • Baldur's Gate
  • Baldur's Gate II: Shadow of Amn + Throne of Baal
  • Temple of Elemental Evil
  • Devil May Cry 3
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (GOTY Edition)
  • Civilization V: Complete Edition
  • Gothic
  • Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer
  • Mass Effect
  • Xenogears
  • Xenoblade Chronicles
  • Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 2 (the duology)
  • Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 ( .. i appreciate both FES and P3P. I'll add them both here, can't pick really)
  • Max Payne
  • Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne
  • Super Mario Galaxy
  • Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
  • Thunder Force IV
  • Panzer Dragoon: Zwei
  • Panzer Dragoon Saga
  • Guilty Gear X2 Reload
  • Half Life
  • Dragon Quest V
  • Unreal Tournament '99: GOTY
  • Street Fighter Alpha 3/Zero 3 (the console version, specifically the one containing the World Tour mode)
  • Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
  • Doom (the first one) and Doom II (they both should be placed at the same spot, they're one continuous game for me)
  • Duke Nukem 3D
  • Halo: Combat Evolved
  • Age of Empires II
  • Metal Gear Solid (the original PS1 version)
  • System Shock 2
  • Chrono Trigger
  • Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne
  • Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (they're a duology forming one cohesive story, they should be placed at the same spot)
  • Undertale
  • Sonic 3 & Knuckles
  • Crysis (and Warhead)

There is just too many games out there at different points in my life they move around the list with newer releases.
50. nier automata - What a great game you can tell the love that went into making this. soundtrack A+++
49. metroid prime - A game that did many aspects correctly ahead of its time and a revitalization of a series that had gone missing for a bit.
48. diablo 2 - no explination needed.
47. ninja gaiden black - the action genre probably wouldnt be so fleshed out with out it. a revitalization of a series that had gone missing for a bit.
46. silent hill 2 - does something different and further looks into the psychological aspect of horror.
45. super metroid - classic
44. dark souls - this is a 3d castlevania done right. take notes konami.
43. altered beast - classic
42. streets of rage 2 - one of the best beatem ups ever made the soundtrack is killer.
41. zelda a link to the past - transcends zelda further and is miles ahead zelda 1 and 2.
40. resident evil 3 - this game is better than re2 :p

39. symphony of the night - best 2d castlevania perfection.
38. silent hill - went in a different route than competitor really cool.
37. gravity rush - this game is undderated it does stuff other games wouldnt fathom of trying. it also looks nice has a nice soundtrack.
36. deus ex - overshadows it's entire franchise deserves a remake.
35. X-Men vs Street Fighter - the best vs game its all my friends ever want to play.
34. halo - self explanitory
33. dead space - in an era of basically mediocre silent hill releases, and fading japanese horror genre, also re was going more action dead space brought out what the genre was missing and in space atmospheric beyond measure.
32. metal gear solid - its clicks on many aspects I think it also overshadows the franchise.
31. doom 2016 - a revitalization of a series that had gone missing for a bit. the soundtrack omg.
30. bloodborne - the best souls game something unlike anything else.

29. dead space 2 - its better than the first game delves into more space setting not just a space ship.
28. zelda breath of the wild - its not perfect but it clicks on many things I have high hopes for the sequel.
27. super mario bros 3 - I would be castrated if this wasnt on here.
26. sonic mania - the best sonic game.
25. soul calibur 2 - overshadows the entire franchise clicks on all fronts.
24. smash bros melee - over 1000 hours and it never gets old.
23. super street fighter 2 the new challengers - I prefer this version of street fighter 2 I personally think turbo is too fast.
22. killer instinct x1 - a fighting game that had support end too soon, they really dont know what they created here.
21. mario 64 - bias first 3d game I played :p
20. resident evil remake - these dudes went above and beyond turning that shitty looking first game into something really memorable.

19. final fantasy 7 - intro plays the whole game just clicks.
18. final fantasy 9 - the creator thinks this is epitome of franchise I like it more than 7.
17. dragon age origins/awakening - bioware created a game that overshadows the franchise.
16. mass effect 2 - better than the first it is super cool :p
15. super mario world - the best mario game.
14. resident evil 5 - bias i've beaten it a few too many times.
13. zelda twlight princess - I like this game I get that it has hate, but the dark and gloomy setting was pretty epic its also in the timeline I prefer the most.
12. half life 2 - duh
11. alien isolation - has flaws but is also something the horror genre needed teh best alien game.

10. resident evil 4 - I could probably talk about it all day.
9. golden eye - self explanitory
8. mortal kombat 2 - bias the first video game i've ever played.
7. halo 2 - its better than 1 has quite possibly the best multiplayer ever.
6. pokemon black - my favorite pokemon game ive played since red.
5. zelda majoras mask - the themes this game portrays is something unlike any other nintendo game I wish they would be this experimental again.
4. doom og - yep there are still people playing it to this day with mods.
3. zelda ocarina of time - the best zelda game ever made bias its like the 2nd 3d game i've ever played overshadows the whole franchise.
2. Kotor & Kotor 2 - I'm a big star wars fan these are the best star wars games ever made.
1. chrono trigger - it should be remade it might even be perfection.

Wow this is a clusterfuck of a thread. I love it.
Top 25, I may edit later but this is a lot of work

25. Metal Gear Solid 5
24. Bloodborne
23. Dark Souls 3
22. Metal Gear Solid 4
21. Ninja Gaiden Black
20. Gradius/Life Force
19. Uncharted 2
18. Last of Us
17. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
16. Super Mario 64
15. Ninja Gaiden (NES)
14. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1989 Arcade
13. Half Life 2
12. Assassin's Creed 2
11. GoldenEye 007
10. Perfect Dark
9. Call of Duty: Black ops 1
8. Street Fighter II: Championship Edition
7. Final Fantasy 11
6. Tekken 7
5. Zelda: Ocarina of time
4. Halo 2
3. Dark Souls 1
2. Splinter Cell: Pandora tomorrow
1. Phantom Dust

Let me also address the reason behind Super Street Fighter II Turbo Edition (top 10), because it's a little more complex.

Super Street Fighter II Turbo Edition. This is 50% pure, strong nostalgia, 25% is a love for the 90's and 25% is the gameplay which is a culmination of the SFII series of installments.
  • 50% pure, strong nostalgia - I played this video game back in the mid-90's with my cousin on an arcade cabinet in a hotel, i don't recall how many times. This was the second fighting game i ever played, the first one being a pathetically bad port of Street Fighter II on DOS. It sparked an obsession for fighting games, which is quite subdued these days, but my appreciation for Turbo is still there. The memories i have with this game in mind are some of the best i ever have.
  • 25% love for the 90's - I tend to be more inclined to love the 90s aesthetic and music found in japanese animations and video games a great deal more than anything that came out of Japan since. What's remarkable is that i can't exactly pin point why, i didn't grow up with any sort of correlation towards that particular decade in japanese history (never watched anything or played almost anything out of Japan in the 90s). I just happened to find this out wen i dug into that particular decade a great deal later (i think .. in 2009). Japanese 90s music in particular is brilliantly good.
  • 25% flawless gameplay - it's fun as Hell. And that's that.

Yeah... That's a tall order.

But they should have a top 50 contest. List with most thumbs up wins

Nah. Do it like college football. Have it based on a point system. If the game makes it on your list AND at least one other person’s list, then it gets 1 point. The more points it earns the higher it goes.

Edit the choices to take out troll posts like Shaq Fu, etc and have a tie breaker secondary vote for just the games that tied in number of points.

Edit: Thinking it through, this would almost certainly result in Fortnite or Candy Crush landing in first place. So, you’d have to limit it somehow which would nullify it being a truly popular vote.

So much projecting in a single post.:pie_thinking:

A list of that person's favorite games gives me a snapshot of what type of gamer they are, what systems they've owned, their general age. It gives insights into commonalities like if they have early 90s Capcom arcade games I know we're likely to have taken part in that quintessential 90s arcade scene. They might know what it feels like to wait in a line to play SFII, MK, or NBA Jam, and when you're on deck you put your coin on the rim of the screen and say "next". So a list says a lot.

And I've read every list, but I didn't see yours.

I’m very curious what I’m ‘projecting’, other pointing out a bunch of fanboy ninnies having a crying hissy fit because a mainstream OPINION list didn’t go their way? Oh no, Fortnite! Oh no, Minecraft! Woe is me, that I had to read someone’s else’s opinion!

Then following that up with massive text dumps that don’t put a tenth of the work the same article they’re bitching about, did.

Agree or disagree, The Guardian article is fun to read. Take a look. And that comes from someone who absolutely hates the source.

You enjoy reading a bunch of titles back to back, with no justification, or effort put into them? You do you. Maybe the kind of limited intellect that jumps to ‘iS It PrOjeCtioN?!’ is more easily entertained.

Challenge accepted, I'll be working on it and it'll be a better order than what I did prior. Also I've been reading and responding to lists, personally.

That’ll be an interesting read. I don’t mean to pressure you into doing it. I was sharing an opinion before people forced me to ratchet up my rhetoric a bit in response to their nonsense.

I think the main take of this thread is that if you get 50 nerds in a room who do play games regularly then they'll come up with a more varied list than the boring crap the guardian did.

I don't expect anybody to actually read my list, although you probably should because my taste is par excellance.

This is some massive projection right here. All this rage and you still haven't posted anything. By all means, carry on beating your chest instead of participating.

Hahahaha.

Rage, huh? pRoJectiOn again? Should I be paying you for all this amateur psychologist work?

It seems to me you have a big problem with what I said, but instead of addressing it in any meaningful way, you’re reading down through a checklist of talking points, no matter how much sense they don’t make.

Someone has a good point about the genesis of the thread, or how it could be more? Just bellow PROJECTION, and OH YEAH, YOU HAVEN’T DONE ONE YET. Sure. That kind of thing will definitely override my existing criticism, and make me want to participate.

Maybe it’s greedy, but sometimes I’m in favor of eugenics, so I can have a better message board experience.

It doesn't feel like pressure, I love doing this stuff. I just didn't think anyone would bother reading something like that.

Awesome. I definitely will. I love seeing other people’s experiences. I either get new, nostalgic viewpoints from my favorite games, or new games to consider playing down the road.

I feel like people are going to call me dishonest, though, because I'll say it right now... the list WON'T be the same as the one I did already haha. That list was done quick and MOSTLY off the top of my head though I'd often try to separate entries in a franchise so it was less clear how much I was winging it.

Oh shit, more chest beating. You didn't even follow through with your own "post 10 and explain their meaning". Maybe you are more of a "do as I say, not as I do" type guy?

Because in smaller lists, people tend to try be more objective, and they all start being very similar. Bloodborne, The Witcher, Final Fantasy, Zelda, Half Life, etc. It gets fucking boring cos we've seen those names a thousand times already.

What I've liked about this thread, is that some people have unearthed their personal favourites. Games that never make it to a top ten or top twenty: Die Hard Trilogy, Vandal Hearts, F-Zero, etc. Some of the games mentioned here, I've forgotten even existed.

I do think a thread like you mentioned would be cool though, if you could somehow get people to avoid the typical ones.

-Arcadia- -Arcadia- looks like people are adding reasons to their Top 50. You should just make a list, dude(ette) and have some fun on this completely meaningless videogame forum where we talk about videogames. Or as a wise person said:

Different context (although I loled), but you’re right. I escalated against others and my rhetoric went from criticism that could be reasonably responded to, to something a bit more poisonous to the thread, and less reasonable.
