Future NIS games to be PS4/Vita only, new PS4 game releasing later this year

I don't really mind since I own both a PS4 and a Vita now but I'd still like to see titles on my 3DS and maybe even Steam as well.

I have to wonder if NIS is banking heavily on western sales for Disgaea 5.

They actually specifically said in the interview that overseas support was a factor of jumping to PS4 so early. He said more than half of their sales come from overseas markets in the Famitsu interview

It's a shame the SRPG genre is so niche because the Disgaea series is the best in the business. Too bad they don't get very rewarded for that fact.

Day 1 get for me though. Can't wait

Ah, well there we go. Makes sense.

Interesting given MS listed them as an Xbox developer.
http://www.siliconera.com/2014/04/2...tware-japanese-companies-xbox-one-developers/

So I guess that means some of that list is false filler then that'll need to be cleared away.

I think that list is just for developers with Xbox One dev kits, but not necessarily developers that are actively developing for the platform.

Nice to hear they're getting support from Sony. Their TV Ad is pretty funny
This is an accurate description of Disgaea combat. Why would you smack someone in the face to kill them when you can summon a gigantic freaking meteor and kill them for 1000x+ their normal HP? I'm going to be bummed out if there's no 100 Billion Damage trophy. Guess they could up it to 1 trillion. I'd be okay with that.

Sony is burying NIS under Bloodborne in Japan this week so this is the very least they could do!

Man, NIS hasn't made a game I cared about in years. Their style just annoys me to no end. Still, I think its good they're migrating to PS4--they could use more exclusive games.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.

They're publishing great non-NIS games as of late such as Danganronpa.

Their latest portfolio of localized non-first party games are better than Atlus' localized non-first party games IMO.

I've literally never played an NIS game, so forgive me for the dumb question, but because of their Japanese nature, I would assume the fact that they're not making anything for PC or Xbox One isn't news, right? It's just the next-gen part that stands out here?

NIS never made games for Xbox. They did make a few games for Wii, DS, and PC, but they bombed and NIS moved back to being PlayStation exclusive. It is more notable that they've dropped support of PS3 because of the Anime nature of their games appealing to Japan. I mean, they make the Disgaea games for crying out loud and that's as Anime as you can get.

I'm looking forward to Disgaea 5, but I imagine the sales in both Japan and the West are going to be abysmal. They will probably make some money on the DLC though since they are ridiculously expensive.

Become a software sales specialist and get to work on it, lol

There are a lot of companies taking a wait-and-see approach with this hardware transition, but if you look at it from the perspective of our customers, they’re not seeing a whole lot of games coming out, which is in turn making them wary to move onto new hardware. It’s our job as game developers to bring that energy to life and make that market a reality. Of course, saying it is one thing and doing is another, but when we made this decision to switch over, we did it because we’re really enthusiastic about helping make that shift happen ourselves.”

I'll support you NIS.

I feel like this is a similar reason we've seen Idea Factory/Compile Heart move to PS4 as well. Between the success of some of their franchises in the West and the PS4's commercial success, it wouldn't surprise me if many of the smaller developers/publishers feel they can lose some sales in their home market if the West will make up for it.

I think Neptunia sells better in the west, or at least it sells quite well, so that may be part of why IF/CH have moved on so quick (and they're pretty snappy about localizing lately). Dunno about NIS, but Disgaea seems reasonably popular.

I always liked NISA's output, but Dangan Ronpa has been a great get for them. Good thing too, Neptunia's kind of an awkward loss for them...it even had it's own section on NISA's store until Idea Factory International happened.

Prepare to be disappointed in that regard? They made all of two DS games and one Wii game. It's possible they'll do Steam as assorted random JApanese devs have lately, but I wouldn't expect much for Nintendo hardware and the Steam thing is a crapshoot at best.

I personally wouldn't mind if they revisited a concept like The Witch and the Hundred Knight on PS4 or Vita.

Tales of is likely to be PS4/PC in West.
Now that you mention it, we haven't really heard anything new on the localization for a while.
I don't think they'll cancel the PS3 version though.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
Thats not surprising considering they have make like probably 5 non-ps titles since the company was founded, and their last non-ps title is probably more than 5 years ago.

While I do respect them for doing this, I kinda feel like it's a necessary move because the PS3 base just wasn't buying their games anymore. They had a string of poorly performing games recently:

551 PS3 Battle Princess of Arcadias 9,854 / 11,983 2013-09-26
618 PS3 Z/X Zillions of enemy X: Zekkai no Crusade 6,758 / 8,607 2013-05-23
669 PS3 The Awakened Fate: Ultimatum 6,443 / 6,443 2014-09-25

Awakened Fate in particularly I'd have expected to perform a lot better.

So I kinda feel like they're making all this noise of "hey, we're on a new machine now!" to try and re-invigorate the old fans who were buying their games to come back again.

(Though admittedly, Witch & Hundred Knight sold decently in 2013).

In addition, it's nice to hear them pledging support for Vita, but I feel like they're much too late to the party here and should've been doing this at any point in the last 3 years when PS3 was starting to sag.

Yes, in terms of numbers of titles they have supported it - but there was a long, long period where they released nothing substantial on it (a port of Disgaea for launch and an original VN in the first year... and then nothing for 12 months until a port of a PSP title).

2014 was a much better year for them supporting Vita, but we're still looking at Disgaea port, and two "indie-esque" titles. Shin Hayarigami feels like the most worthwhile original title they've put on the console, and that was still a multi-plat VN.

For a company that grew up creating original SRPG's, it sure doesn't feel like they're throwing any substantial support behind Vita.

Anyway, I wish them luck with this plan. I own both a PS4 and a Vita and I like NIS, so I'm certainly looking forward to what they have cooking, I just hope this works out for them.

NIS was an early adopter of PS3 too, right? Cool they're jumping the PS3 ship, kinda sad this qualifies as unusual (for Japan) though. Kinda weird the nicher companies (Compile Heart too) seem to be leaving PS3 before some of the larger ones even.
Their games don't need to sell that much and they have a dedicated fanbase that will jump ship with them. It's a lot easier for companies serving a niche to do this.

Think of all the silly Cave shooter on JP 360 arguments, anyone who actually cared just bought a 360. Sure it was not a lot of people but it didn't matter in the end.

What's that sound I hear? It's like nails, being pounded. Oh, is that a coffin I see?

Pessimism aside, about time really. I'm guessing they saw others' success and followed it. Although I'm confused just what exactly they'll do with the Vita considering they've mostly done ports and cheaper games with it.
It probably doesn't help that all their forays into other consoles/portables were pretty bad. Disgaea DS was a pretty weak port considering what the DS could actually do. ClaDun 2 was a bad port as well and if that's what they used to test the waters on PC/Steam no wonder it soured their opinions(although there's always that rumour of false data regarding PC interest...).

Still, good luck to them. 25pts in preorders is not an inspiring number though.

Back around the time Victory came out they released a statement saying it was their 2nd highest selling franchise behind Disgaea, so yeah that's a good chunk of profit lost for them and pocketed by IF. Probably made up by DanganRonpa.

Arcadias was under-appreciated and misunderstood I feel. It was far more of an indie-style game (like Firefly Diary) and I don't think people expected that, let alone wanted it on a PS3.
I'm gonna be harsh though and call Awakened Fate a flat out bad game. Perhaps not deserving sales that low but considering the developers of ZHP and Guided Fate didn't work on it(cause they left), in addition to dropping a ton of features from those 2 previous games(for the worse), and just being generally lower budget, it did not really seem like a PS3 game worth selling for $40.

Witch did do well but it's mentioned elsewhere that it was still a loss. It had hugely troubled development, exceeding almost 3 years, and had its release date delayed over a year and a half. From existing screenshots and interviews, you could tell they had to redo a lot of the game because it just wouldn't work as they had originally envisioned, which most likely wasted a lot of time.

The first is a good point, the second? lol. Go read Y2Kev's post on acquisitions before making dumb statements like that. Plus, the idea that Sony doesn't have enough money to buy a tiny company like NIS is pretty fucking laughable.

Sony is on a tear selling off, downsizing or closing studios and divesting shares in game companies. They've had one reasonable quarter in the last few years and can't staunch the bleeding. How is it a stupid statement exactly? It sounds like you agree that there's no point in them buying but feel compelled to stand up for poor old Sony's bank account for some reason.

I hope they will make a new Prinny for Vita one day.
Hopefully they find great success in the West because i fear the worst for D5 in Japan.

Kind of sounds like NIS want to lead the rpg front on PS4 before the big dogs get here, that way they can have their usual fanbase and possibly expand on it.

I've been hoping they'll make Prinny 3 for a while, too. But there was a pretty major decline from the first to the second in Japan.

388 PSP Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero? 17,535 / 35,120
595 PSP Prinny 2: Dawn of Operation Panties, Dood! 8,062 / 16,217

And I've a feeling with the state the Vita is in in the USA, they're not going to make up much of a difference there, so it seems unlikely.

Still, there's been a push for more "indie-esque" games from NIS lately, especially for Vita (HTOL#NIQ) but also PS3 (Battle Princess) and I suppose Prinny could fall into that category, so you never know!

I'm not defending their bank account, I'm pointing out a dumb and wrong statement. Did you even read Y2Kev's post? Sony have access to plenty of resources if required.

Because Prinny 2 wasn't half as good as Prinny 1.

Still think sony shot themselves in the foot with persona 5 on ps3.

Because making the game available to wider audiences is such a bad idea? Give me a break. P5 started as a PS3 game, the least they could do is let PS3 owners play it.

If only XV and Type-0 had done the same.

If that's the case, it would be really cool of Sony to sell me a 128gb Vita card. My living room is cluttered enough at the moment with the Wii U, PS3, and 360. Don't really plan on buying a PS4 any time soon, so I'm looking forward to NIS's support for the Vita.
