1. Bayonetta 2 ; I thought a lot about it, and this game kept going back and forth from No1 to No2. I settled with No1.
Reasons? Well quite obviously the game is phenomenal, the pacing is great, the story fills some plot-holes and together with the first game actually manages to be coherent and also much fun, it looks awesome and the gameplay is everything i ever wanted for this game. Bayonetta 2 managed to be a better game overall than Bayonetta and that means a whole lot to me. After way too much thinking, believe me, i declare it my GotY.
2. The Evil Within ; Earlier i mentioned that Bayonetta was going from No1 to No2 and back up in my mind for quite some time. Yes you guessed it, TEW is the reason.
Let's be honest, TEW is not a perfect game, it has its technical issues which start with the creation of a new development team, continues with the adoption of a weird engine for a Japanese studio, and ends up with heavy modification of said engine by that new team to fit their needs. The result wasn't disastrous, far from it, but managed to stir much discussion on whether or not TEW is good enough. And you know what? It is.
I played this game on PC, so my experience might be different that that of some other people, but the game looked amazing, it run great and that ended my technical worries.
Regarding its content, Mikami like many artists through history, made another version of his Magnum Opus, which is RE4, and whether he managed to surpass himself or not is debatable. I found many parts of TEW to be the pinnacle of his creativity, dethroning even his best works, REmake and RE4, but i also found other parts inferior to those best of his works. In its entirety, TEW is a game which, just like RE4, I'll be playing for years to come, and considering it has upcoming DLC, maybe more years than i initially thought.
Mikami formed a new team and almost made my GotY, and that's an accomplishment on it's own. I hope he was bullshitting us when he said he won't make another game, or at least i hope he reconsiders, and a better, grander and more technically stable sequel will happen, because TEW is not only a great game, but also a great story that can make a great franchise. Congratulations Tango!
3. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U ; There's little i have to say about this game. I love Smash, and this is an amazing Smash imo. I even consider it as good as Melee, and quite honestly, in my very, very limited free time lately, the only thing i do is play Smash. Based Sakurai!
4. Mario Kart 8 ; In a year when a game like MK8 is No4, you really know some great game were released, and it's true for 2014. But that doesn't mean anything about the quality of this game. MK8 is phenomenal, it's the most fun you can have playing with friends if you don't own Smash, it looks amazing, it runs buttery smooth and deserves a place very high in every GotY list. Also its DLC is the best thing after the game itself. Never seen so much quality content in such a price before. Excellent.
5. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes ; A demo you said? Don't make me laugh. GZ, is one of the most technically sophisticated, inspiring and fulfilling pieces of software this year. Short, restrained, but with endless hours and replayability and more things happening in this 'open world' camp, than in some open world cities. The wait for TPP couldn't be any more painful. Also GZ is the game that made my PS4 worthwhile this year.
6. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze ; Very little to say. I don't really like platformers, i like DK, i love Retro and this game is the best 2D platformer I've ever played. Period. Tight and technical, without too much clutter, just like it should be.
7. Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth ; OK, I'm an Atlus fanboy. I love the EO series, and i love the whole SMT multiverse, and when i'm feeling super-silly, i love the Persona series the most.
I was late to start playing this game, mostly due to spending a hell lot of time on SSBU and PKMN, but man, what a game it is. If you like EO and Persona, you simply can't miss this one, seriously.
And hopefully the more popular Persona brand name will raise awareness of the more niche EO series because it really deserves it.
8. Diablo III: Reaper of Souls ; Being a Diablo fan, i was severely disappointed with the game in the beginning. I played the game with big breaks, coming back every time a new patch was live, which admittedly made the game better, played a bit and then off again. RoS not only fixed the game, but gave it the best content so far. I now enjoy D3 immensely and i firmly believe that RoS deserves a spot in this top 10.
9. Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire ; Possibly my favorite Pokemon game(s) returns in this remake, and it feels damn good.
10. Dark Souls II ; There's something i don't like about this latest iteration of my favorite series last gen (including Demon's Souls), but it still trumps most games out there easily. I haven't played the DLC yet and i guess I'll wait for the current gen port next year for that.
The base game barely made it to the top 10 for me, but it did make it and it's worth it. And anyway if this is the B team, then FROM really has some of the most talented people working for them.
Honorable Mentions
x. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance ; Wouldn't have a game from last year on my top 10 of this year, but as the PC port is eligible, then i thought it at least belongs to the honorable mentions. One of the best games of its genre and it didn't even have proper budget and enough production time. A sequel with none of these restraints could be the best CAG ever.
x. P.T./Silent Hills ; Just a playable teaser and already better than most full fledged games out there. Visually impressive and with spectacular lighting, creepy as hell and atmospheric, it was the best surprise this year and i can't wait to see how the game turns out.
x. Wolfenstein: The New Order ; I'm notorious of not liking FPS's, but i can't say no to a polished, singleplayer, frenetic, oldschool FPS campaign, and that's what WTNO is. Simple, mindless Nazi slaughtering fun. Who could say no to that? I know i can't.
MachineGames proving that they have it in spades, excellent work.
