My wife is pregnant with our first child. She is due in 3 months and we have it narrowed down to 2 names. Peter and Ronan. He will have dual citizenship with Ireland and the US thanks to my wife so we'd like to pick a name that would fit well in both places. My wife isn't a big fan of Ronan because she can't think of a suitable nickname for Ronan. She likes Peter because that was her grandfathers name but the concern there is that our last name starts with P so his initials would be PP and he might get made fun of as a kid. I like both names but I like Ronan a little better because its somewhat unique. She likes Peter better because of her grandfather and you have an easy nickname with Pete. What do you think GAF?

Both are fine names - I don't think 'PP' will be that big of a deal, kids will find a reason to make fun of any name. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

Out of those two I'd go with Peter. Are those the only options or are you free to bring something else up?

Plus he would share his initials with Spider-Man.

These threads never end well. However, I cannot condone giving a kid the initials "PP" knowingly. And Peter is a pretty boring name (sorry to any Peter's out there).

I vote for Ronan.

In all seriousness, I come from a family where I have relatives with names like Odin, Rocko, Thor, or Skaade (we're all American). You're good.

I think Ronan is pretty cool. I always liked the Irish names Aiden and Shay (see picture <--) too, in case you hadn't thought of those. Also, the PP thing is stupid, don't worry about that :p (kids dumb enough to make fun of something like that aren't smart enough to those initials together anyways XD)

Personally, I don't like naming children after relatives. Middle name is much more suited for that. I'd much rather they have their own name.

the trick is that at school he'll be made fun for something else if his initials won't be PP. if you like Peter go with it. maybe your wife don't like it and it's just using the school tease as an excuse and a way not to hurt your feelings.
also, if you go to her saying "the internet has spoken, here's you son's name" she'll be probably pissed.

I do like Aidan a lot. However, my wife's cousin has a son named Aidan so I wanted to go for something not already used in the current generation of the family.

Having named and raised 2 boys, you should go with what you like and forget about other people. Honestly. I doubt you will be seeing your wife's cousin's son alot.

Give him a fiery Gaelic name to be proud of! My son loves his name.
