The two biggest Nintendo titles were both indistinguishable from any of the open-world piles that have accumulated in Sony's lineup. I grant that there's less genre-blended asset tour trash on the Switch but I doubt if that'll be true in another couple of years.

Can't say I really agree with the diversity claim.
When did the last motostorm release? Demons Souls? Really?

Taking the current gen exclusives into consideration...
Almost all of thier AAA releases have been third person single player cinematic games that feature a lot of walking, climbing, and hiding in bushes. It's pretty apparent at this point that Sony's devs have been given Naughty Dog's Toolset and it shows. Bloodborne and Spiderman are both different, but that is because they are third party devs.

While they have released games like R&C and Gravity Rush, I'd like to see more diversity from Sony. Diversity is Sony's weakness when you look at the diversity MS and Nintendo are putting out.

Nintendo having games like BoTW, Smash, and Splatoon alone has more diversity than almost all of Sony.

MS having games like QB, Ori, Sea of Thieves, Cuphead, and Sunset Overdrive alone has more diversity than almost all of Sony.

With Nintendo just beginning to hit it's stride with the switch, and MS aquiring studios left and right, this disparity is only going to grow. Sony's game portfolio needs a genre refresh.
So basically
Sony = 3rd Person cinematic
Nintendo = Party games
MS = Budget games

I guess MLB, Astro Bot, GT Sport, Driveclub, Killzone, Last Guardian, Resogun, Alienation, Matterfall, Knack are all the same type of games. No diversity in that bunch at all/s. IB4 those examples don't count because...reasons.

That's the smart decision, Sony are going to get absolutely pummelled by Microsoft and Nintendo next gen. Not to mention, Amazon and Google when they release their consoles.

PlayStation is led too much by morons to be a continued success but hey, it's been a fun ride. Kudos Sony

"Sony puts out tons of AAA a year, and new IPs."

You and me must differ greatly on the meaning of 'tons' and 'new IP'.

Nintendo has created a whole universe in which it makes its games. While I agree that they over use some of their characters at times, they do vary the gameplay between the different series. Mario and Mario kart aren't even close to being in the same genre. Splatoon is a third person arena shooter that deals with paint rather than bullets. It's primarily played online as well I believe. Does Sony have a AAA arena shooter? Does Sony have a primarily online MP game period that isn't GTSport?

Sony has released a bunch of AAA games that are beginning to look and feel more the same.

Good thing that gaming is not a zero sum game where successes by Nintendo must cause void in quality elsewhere. Some people keep repeating this mantra “Sony releases games that feel the same”, but just repeating it does not necessarily make it true. Even when the camera is third person and you do shoot and explore, you can have tons of different gameplay variations (wait... I think in Splatoon you do kind of explore the environment, the camera is third person, and you shoot at things... and that is the same in Luigi’s Mansion and Super Mario Sunshine too... oh wow... ;)).

Exactly! Thanks for helping prove my point.

TLOU2 - 3rd person cinematic featuring stealth bush hiding.
GoT - 3rd person cinematic featuring stealth bush hiding.
Days Gone - 3rd person cinematic featuring stealth bush hiding.
FF7 - It's not made by a 1st party dev, so it has potential. Who knows when it's coming.
Wild - I forgot all about this game seeing as it hasn't been mentioned in almost 4 years. Scalebound has more hype than this game, and that's a canceled game.
Dreams - This game could actually diversify Sony's portfolio... Of course I played Project Spark years ago, so I have no interest.
Erica - Completely throwing away any excuse to not use the term 'movie games', Erica is literally just a movie... Sold as a game.

Yeah, Sony's going to need to do better than that to diversify it's lineup. Especially in the AAA space.

I don't think Sony lacks quality though. I think their quality is top notch.

Let me put it this way. Sony is like an A class Steakhouse. They have T-Bone, ribeye, porterhouse, filet minion, but all their main course offerings are steak. While I love steak, I'd get awful tired of eating there everyday.

Nintendo is a bit like a themed restaurant. Their offerings might be called silly names, but their offerings are varied a bit more. They are quirky, and do their own thing.

MS is Chili's or IHOP.

Then if you actually play them you would realise this is a superficial forum look at them and realise all three are worth playing on their own right (I am
not sure how you seem to be interested in the genre but have zero interest to play the labour of almost 5 years of work by the studio that actually started the whole UGC / Play, Create, Share craze and that is offering what seems the pinnacle of the genre with a VR creation / sculpting mode to boot because you played an Xbox exclusive a few years ago... Dreams seems to be a much wider and deeper game creation game than Project Spark even attempted to be, not to take anything from what it achieved of course).

Lol, well... I think MS is much better than that... I have actually been at IHOP and could not be more disappointed :/ lol...

We will agree to disagree on the diversification of Sony exclusive titles (which si think they have, see: Gravity Rush 2, Dreams, Astrobot VR, DriveClub, Resogun, Bloodborne, Shadow of the Colossus [remake], Killzone: Shadow Fall, Knack, etc... all in addition to GT Sport, Uncharted 4, God of War, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Infamous: Second Son, etc...) though :).

Nothing to say on the creativity and genius of Nintendo as game maker, duly and fully agree :)!

You mean like Death Stranding and Concrete Genie, and let's not forget their first-party are still pushing VR with titles like Blood and Truth. That's quite a line-up especially on a platform nearing the end of its life as a flagship product.

The thing is also that if you want to talk diversity of portfolio, you also need to factor in third party support from Asia. 2017 was massively elevated for me by Nioh and Nier: Automata, and that situation isn't an aberration. Lets not forget upcoming titles like Granblue Fantasy Relink, Project Awakening, Babylon's Fall etc.

The plain truth is that in terms of software line-up PS4 is crushing the competition with both quality and quantity.

Not saying that MS doesn't have its bright spots. but truthfully if you're jaded about 3rd person cinematic adventures, what about Xbox's annualized stream of Forza titles? Yeah there's regular and Horizon, but seriously that aside they are all the same.

Poor services, lack of features, high prices, and now censorship... To be fair, is there any reason to buy a PS4 besides the exclusive games or
herd behavior?
You mean any reason to buy a games console than to play games?
The services are fine. what 'features' does it lack other than one to play old games rather than new ones, and what high prices? Ridiculous.

Don't go to Microsoft. They're all about "diversity" now. It's gonna be the same big circlejerk as everywhere else where the people come above the product again. Nothing against minorities or white people, I just want game development to be about the ideas and creativity and not social justice.

I haven't noticed a "social justice" conspiracy from Microsoft. I think you spend too much time on the Internet, there isn't a sinister plot to subvert your videogames.

I agree, but if you are triggered by words such as inclusivity and extrapolate from there which major U.S. company does not have this in their official pages: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/diversity/inside-microsoft/cross-disability/hiring.aspx https://educationblog.microsoft.com/tag/inclusivity/ https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/diversity/default.aspx ... and more... Xbox Boss Phil Spencer talks the importance of diversity and stomping out toxicity

(I do not think those links point at anything bad or sinister, but if you are hell bent on chasing windmills, you can have a field day everywhere...)

This is a mirror-image of a Resetera thread. People dismissing games, platforms even, because someone associated with them has the "wrong" politics.

Demented and sad.
I completely agree and that's why I'm lowkey waiting for some genius to start a well-moderated message board that doesn't have to be "at war" with the other site or its users. I'm frankly just sick of all the shit-throwing between tribal groups and it's a phenomenon that doesn't even exist where I live (outside of the US) so I can hardly even relate to it. It just looks as if everyone has an axe to grind over self-created problems.

It's not a conspiracy. Agenda might even be pushing it, but it's very common to follow the trend of diversity these days. I can't count on my fingers the amount of times my friend from HS (and this was in 2013) complained that the head of his HS made speeches about "Diversity".

Saying I think it is a "conspiracy" is your projection and I haven't said that, and there's not even a reason to accuse me of suggesting that. It's a movement that are being applied in businesses, sometimes out of goodwill and often to avoid needless controversy because not diversifying a workplace in 2019 means you're racist, basically, and I think it's a shame people's hands had to be forced, even if I do have some sympathy that a lot of non-whites or women have long been rejected to work at places because they couldn't enter "The boy's club".

I'm getting real sick of Naughty Dog too tbh.
In fairness, one of the issues seems to have come about from other developers trying to imitate Naughty Dog. I'm not a massive fan of The Last of Us (it's alright) but I don't remember too many games that shaped themselves like it prior to its release. I don't think either Horizon: Zero Dawn nor God of War Reboot would have happened without TLoU.

Uncharted IV was a fun weird mix of silly fun and too serious. Felt tonally inconsistent despite being enjoyable.

Nobody can start that message board, it is the people contributing to it that is underneath it all. I say let people talk and discuss and let's try to be a bit more open to ideas we initially dislike. Abuses and truly damaging behaviour is normally dealt with quite well here, I think the mod / management team is doing a great job.

Yes, but with both boards very keen on bans, I think that's a counterproductive issue.

That said, I do appreciate cleaning the house of the worst of the worst of FAQ and the like, by which I mean blatant shitposting or immature trolling.

Before the bubble burst on GAF, I was first banned by Era-mentality people by making an admittedly tasteless (but still funny) remark in an Anita Sarkeesian thread about the tendency of harassment between male and female people, and then when it burst, it seemed as if some snide individuals had seen the ban-policies of GAF as an avenue to push for personal agendas and make them the norm. It pains me the most that today's GAF is basically everyone who wouldn't be compatible for Era and Era have decried GAF. It's just a split community and it makes gaming worse for it even if we're still just the fraction of the ignorant masses that dominates the install base of each gaming platform.

Is it me or are we having a lot more “console wars” type thread lately? At first I said this as a joke but god damn, NeoGF is really starting turn in to Gamespot’s System Wars.
I was starting to kinda miss it in a weird way.

The days of adults bickering about which system they liked the best seemed to be mostly over and that took a tiny bit of the fun out of it. The PS3 vs 360 gen was so much fun with the insanity people would come up with for why one was better than the other. "Look at these screenshots! The 360 version has 5 bushes and the PS3 only has 3 because it can't render as many. Proof that the 360 is stronger!" and things like this were the best.

Honestly, wasn't ban on console wars just another part of the Era-like mentality anyway? I made a harmless comment about how Driveclub on PS4 didn't look too good right after joining GAF initially and that was a "Junior troll, culling" ban for some stupid reason because of the oversaturated sensitivity that someone might post console-war incentives!

It's just another one of those leftist fallacies where the attempt to be morally good makes you look like a complete asshole upon reflection imo.

I think more than anything it was just tonally inconsistent because Neil Druckmann cannot write something that isn't meant to be dead-serious. He pulled in Josh Scherr to remedy his boringness and it worked to some extent but as you say it also made it less consistent because as a result you can feel how it shifts between occasionally too serious and too "trying to be funny". And both parts made me cringe at times. There's the opening to the level where you enter the ball where Drake has an expository line on Rafe and says something to the effect of "I know time has passed but still...!" and that was such a Druckmann line, like he couldn't handle what he was getting at here. Then in a later chapter you have mansplaining jokes between Drake and Elena that has to show how he can't compliment his wife "because she's a woman" and I downright hated that.

That’s the result of a community with diversity of players. Before the mass invites and Era Gaf was called SonyGAF for a good reason. The forum were worshipping Sony while talking excessive trash about Microsoft. After the mass invites it seems that the player bases between the platforms got more even, which was a joy for someone who isn’t obsessed with Sony.

I kinda get what the OP is trying to say. The censorship thing doesn’t bother me at all; that game was borderline hentai and their policy hasn’t hurt any other game that I know of.

I do feel like they are getting a bit arrogant skipping E3 and all. Surely, if they don’t have enough new 1st party stuff to show, they can do a 3rd party showcase like MS did last year.

However, as long as they kee puttting our GOTY contender after GOTY contender, I’m happy staying in their camp until another company beats them at their own game.

I think the both boards tolerate quite a lot and could be more ban friendly too. Discussion is fine, trolling and floating and astroturfing and hijackijg conversations rudely and dismissively is less so although it is tolerated to a certain extent to favour the discourse of ideas and avoid stomping out issues prematurely. I think mods do a great job budging the conversation to a civil state of things where possible.

I think it was exaggerated, the forum just reflected what was the split on a global scale: a lot of PlayStation gamers and some of them were/are super passionate. Look back at when PS3 launched and you will see that reverted and see people criticising things as if the entire forum were focused on mocking PlayStation and PS3... sometimes there was a kernel of truth too, like there was when MS fans were shouting SonyGAF.

If you have an international forum and it had to reflect the current split in gaming some Xbox One fans may call it SonyGAF, but I bet they would see a different atmosphere of the consoles popularities were inverted and the forums had way more PS fans than Xbox ones by necessity and the minority would likely be very vocal and screaming murder. Most Xbox fans come from English speaking countries and kind of tend to necessarily be part of the forums natural vocal canvases anyways.

If you can only get enjoyment from games if they show underaged cleavage or sideboob, then you should seek professional help, switching to another console manufacturer is not going to solve your issues.

Ah, I see what you are saying. I was mostly talking about Sony as a whole including their third party exclusives and indies. I still think they offer the most variety out of the big three. Sure admittedly they have been making a lot of cinematic games, but most of them play pretty different from each other.

Gow is action adventure. Last of Us is a third person shooter. Uncharted is a faster paced third person shooter. Killzone is a FPS. Ghost of Tsunami is a hack and slash game. Ratchet and Clank is a platformer. Horizon Zero Dawn is a third person hack and slash rpg action hybrid. Jax and Daxter is a platformer. Gran Turismo is a racer. Bloodborne is a third person RPG action game. Last Guardian is a fantasy adventure game. Shadow of colossus is similar. Singstar is a singing simulator? Knack is a platformer and brawler. Until Dawn is an interactive movie and adventure. Detroit is similar to Until Dawn. Siren Is survival horror. Parappa the Rapper. Everyone’s Golf. LocoRoco. Beyond Two Souls. Drawn to Death. Spider-Man. MLB the Show. Flower. Journey. Gravity Rush. I could go on.

Imo, that looks like a pretty diverse line up and I’m surely missing titles, indie games and even some VR games. Microsoft is getting better with diversity it seems, but they have to give their franchises chances to grow and don’t discontinue them if they fail to hit Halo and Gears numbers. Genre refresh? We do not know what their new acquisitions will bring to Xbox yet, so it’s anyone’s guess at this point. We could get a bunch of generic FPS and open world games for all we know.

Nintendo? They have some diversity, but Nintendo themselves for many years generally create platformers and adventure games that typically stay with familiar and recognizable franchises and characters. If Sony only creates cinematic action/adventure games, then Nintendo only creates character platformer in that case.

I definitely agree with but at the same I kind of hate that Sony doesn't properly market their more unique games like Gravity Rush, Puppeteer and Tearaway. They basically sending them to die.
I definitely agree and that’s been going on for awhile unfortunately. They only seem to push the AAA big budget games and ignore the smaller titles. After finally playing Gravity Rush 2 extensively, they need to be pushing the living crap out of that game. So unapologetically good and imaginative imo, yet so underexposed and under appreciated.

omg

you seriously see forums as a place where one "camp" is constantly trolling other "camp" with some horse shit
nonsense ?

i see that not as a result of lol diversity
it is a result of people with attitiude like that
childish paranoid crazies trolling other "camp" trying to prove something or win something
but the only gain in that situation to have is fucking sorry ass sad state of this forum

also mods that just don't give a fuck :messenger_dizzy:

can't the extreme fans just stick to what they enjoy and "worship" it there?
leaving the rest to have normal discussions about stuff?
nothing wrong with fans being hyped or even overexcited about things
but i am sick and tired to see every sony, nd whatever thread infested with so much bs
and if the same is happening in xbox threads then the same apply
i just don't visit these threads so i wouldn't know

I kinda get what the OP is trying to say. The censorship thing doesn’t bother me at all; that game was borderline hentai and their policy hasn’t hurt any other game that I know of.

I do feel like they are getting a bit arrogant skipping E3 and all. Surely, if they don’t have enough new 1st party stuff to show, they can do a 3rd party showcase like MS did last year.

However, as long as they kee puttting our GOTY contender after GOTY contender, I’m happy staying in their camp until another company beats them at their own game.
They censored Death Mark, a adventure/horror game, one of the last retail releases on the Vita i want, utterly stupid

Good for you OP.

I don't care about Sony because they always advertise games too early, games that take too long to come out. Sony is not important to me, there are other companies that give me the games I like.
When a game I want releases on a Sony platform, I check if there are alternatives. If there are not, I rent to play somewhere or forget about it. I can live without them.

Cheers.

Not saying that MS doesn't have its bright spots. but truthfully if you're jaded about 3rd person cinematic adventures, what about Xbox's annualized stream of Forza titles? Yeah there's regular and Horizon, but seriously that aside they are all the same.
This so much. Why this isn’t brought up more often in threads like this I have no idea.

Forza Horizon 4 is the highest scoring Xbox exclusive on Metacritic. Now, I love racing games, but if the best PS4 game was a racing game, it’d be depressing AF. You know what the second highest scoring Xbox exclusive is? Forza Horizon 3.

That is some sick diversity right there.

Edit: Sorry, I forgot. None of those games are Xbox exclusives as they’re on PC also.

In all seriousness. PS will always have exclusives, GotY was one of them. Skipping Sony you will miss them. PC is great but most of the best gaming experiences are on Sony and Nintendo hardware.

Holly shit. the fanboys in this forum are even worst than Gamespot comment section. Holy crap. Did gamefaqs crowd migrated here?
As someone who is also a frequent poster on gamespot, this couldn't be farther from the truth. Kbfloyd, tormentos, and secret police are far worse than any forum we have here
