GAF, is VR worth it as a hardcore single player PC gamer?

You need to try it, see if you like it and see if the games you mentioned are worth the purchase.

I think thats the best target audience right now.

You've already seen pretty much everything in traditional gaming and VR is a completely new way to play.

The AAA graphics argument many people have has never counted to me. It's 3D with actual depth perception, that's a much bigger technical step than something like Ray Tracing to me.

I have a 3080, 5600x and 32GB RAM. Should be plenty good I reckon.

If you like some (really) hard core single player content, go for some flight sim.
IMHO is the best implementation you can get of VR in games right now.

ps. i cheated a little with some MP, but the experience is the same.

Alyx might've cost around 100 million to make, over 4 years. Its a game at the highest echelon in production values, among any game type, normal games included. It was only possible because of Valve's unique stature in the industry. Zero games exist like it and will exist until the next Half Life. So best not to search for similar games because nobody else has the money to invest at a loss simply because they're curious how the reception would be, like Valve was

As a single player gamer, No, it was cool for a month but then I sold everything related to vr. Not going to obtain another one untill the tech is inside a Ray-ban.

Same. It's cool and I still own my Quest 2, I just have no motivation to play it.

If you enjoy cheap indie games, yes. if you expect amazing triple A experience, forget it. once you finish the big budget games, less than a handful of them are out there btw, youll be left with silly indie scraps. you can use third party software to emulate VR in some games but it still can get super clunky and requires setup on your part. overall, a very underwhelming experience once the honeymoon period wears off.

Worth it, it’s a unique take in gaming.

Exactly. Is it the all encompassing future, probably not. But if your remotely into tech and gaming it's worth it imo. I personally gravitate towards the more arcadey and simple titles like beat sabre, space pirate, box VR, walk about mini golf and eleven table tennis. But have played alyx, lone echo, Skyrim, fallout 4, ven VR adventure, robo recall plus loads more. Plus there's hundreds if not thousands of free games and experiences. It's not my main source of gaming but it's definitely fun. Beat sabre is worth the price of admission alone imo

I'm more of a PSVR person, but to me VR mainly feels like a replacement for arcades.
You might not like playing long AAA games in VR as much as you'd think.
It can get hot, and you can feel like you need a break every 30-45min, etc.
I definitely recommend it though. It has it's own place in gaming. Won't be replacing flat screen gaming.

Pretty much all top tier sims on PC incorporate VR and the experience can be awesome.
DCS, Flight Simulator, Assetto Corsa, Automobilista 2, I racing to name a few.

Beyond that the porn is good especially if you like POV stuff

The best games on the platform for me aren't the ones that try to replicate AAA experiences. I have ALYX, but when I decide to play I end up spending time in games like VrBrigade2, Robo Recall, or Pistol Whipped. VR for me right now is an exponentially better version of the lightgun games I used to play in the arcades. They really need House of the Dead and Time Crisis remakes on here.

I am wondering if I should buy a VR headset or not. The problem is that I mainly play AAA single player games and that list for VR seems very small. There is HL Alyx, Skyrim I guess and thats it? All the other games I see are these low budget indie games (I dont mean that as an insult, just preference).

So, should I go ahead with it? I dont want to buy it just to play 2 games and then be disappointed in the investment. Can I stream non-VR games from my PC to the headset and would that be better than playing on a 55 inch C9 OLED? It seems I will mostly go with Oculus quest 2 or HP Windows Mixed reality VR 1000, if I buy them. How are they?
Anyone calling themselves "hardcore" in relation to anything should question all of their life choices :p

Got quest 2 today from Amazon and....holy shit time!

The first thing I started with was HL: Alyx. I know that its the absolute top of the heap and its only downhill from there but whatever. I wanted to be blown away and blown away I was.

Holy mother of......I was there! I spent like half an hour in just one room there. My brain kept them telling me to physically walk everywhere. And I did a lot of times. If not for the safety grid of quest popping up, I wont even know. I was giddy as a child! As people say, it cant be described. You have to be there.

Unfortunately, I know that this effect might wear off and that there arent many, if any, other games that reach this level. Lets see what happens. I will finish the games that quest has to offer and then will decide what to do. But I really really want every game to be a VR game now :(

Recommendations (Quest native games):
  • Superhot
  • Pistol Whip
  • Walkabout Mini-Golf
  • Resident Evil 4
  • Moss
  • The Walking Dead
  • Tetris Effect
  • Zombieland: Headshot Fever
Quest store has a big sale right now, FYI. But you're on PC as well, so you might find other options.

Or buy most of them on PC, get much better graphics and save a lot of money

Also get Boneworks and Blade & Sorcery

Keep in mind that if you want to take your cordless VR headset over to a friend/family's house and show them the miracle of VR, then you'll want those games to be Quest native.

Walkabout mini-golf is a great party game to show off to casuals.

I disagree that Alyx is the pinnacle. It's way up there no doubt, but I would put Half Life 2 VR extremely close to Alyx in VR because the scale of the world in VR is just fucking incredible. It seems absolutely gigantic in VR. Asgard's Wrath is AAA through and through. You need to get into the modding scene though, stuff like RDR even with a controller is mind-boggling.
