GAF Photography 2008: Assignment Thread 33

^^^ Thanks for the tip, I had a quick browse and I'll get onto it as soon as I think of a good theme...

So I said I would put up a couple of photos, flickr totally pwned my resolutions, so I had to resort to megaupload. You can preview them here though.

Here is a 1680x1050 version of my entry:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ELRYEYBE (Contrast)

And a bonus shot, one I got this afternoon which I quite liked, in original size:

Wha? Whereabouts in Oz are you??

Edit: Judging from the time frame, Syd, Mel or Hobart?

Ha close, Canberra actually!

Q. I don't have a fancy camera. Can I enter?

A. Of course.

Q. I can't compete with you guys. Why should I enter?

A. You're not going to get any better with your camera in the bag.

Q. My photo sucks. Are you guys going to laugh at me?

A. Almost certainly not. Just look at the comments my entry received in the "Food" assignment. If that turd of a photo doesn't break out the LOLs, nothing will.

Q. My photo is kind of a stretch to match the theme. Can I still enter it?

A. Sure, but keep in mind 1) "The theme can be interpreted as you see fit" and that 2) "Others will be judging based on whatever criteria they see fit."

Q. How much post-processing is allowed?

A. There's no restriction on post, but this is a photography assignment, not a Photoshop one. In the past, heavily post-processed entries have gotten votes, but rarely competed for the "win." Again, "Others will be judging based on whatever criteria they see fit."

Q. Oh, I've got this great photo I took last summer that's perfect for this theme. Can I enter that?

A. No, entries need to be taken during the assignment period. Instead, show it off by posting it in the quarterly photo thread.

Q. Why are you guys facists? It's just a photo contest.

A. It's not a contest, it's an assignment to get you to go out and strech your photographic skills.

Q. I want to change my entry/What should I do about the non-rule abiding photo I already posted?

A. Just editing your original post is fine. If you'd like, replace the original photo with a link (just change the img tag to a url tag) or post it to the current quarterly photo thread.

Q. I'm banned from NeoGAF. Can I enter?

A. As per the moderators, members who are only temporarily banned may enter, just ask someone you know to post your entry and properly credit it. We've even accepted votes by proxy in this way too. Permanently banned members, however, may not enter nor vote.

Q. Where do I upload my entry?

A. This is pretty much up to you, people frequently use a Flickr account, upload their entry to a free photo hosting service such as photobucket.com or ************, or their own personal web site.

Q. I didn't enter. Can I vote?

A. Absolutely.

Q. How do I vote?

Just post a reply noting your "First choice" and "Runner up","1" and "2", "First" and "Second", "3 points" and "1 point", or anything else that clearly lets whoever tallies the vote know how you want your points distributed. People in the past have voted for only for one entry, leaving the runner up spot blank. Feel free to give honorable mentions or comment on all the entries although neither will effect the vote tally.

Q. I didn't vote. Can I win?

A. The creative writing assignment threads have this rule, and it has been discussed to be added to the photo assignment threads. Since no consensus was reached, for now, yes, you can "win" without voting. However, it is generally frowned upon.

Q. I won! Now what?

A. Think up a theme and post a new thread in the Off-Topic Discussion section with a title that follows this format:

GAF Photography Assignment Thread ##: _theme_

Feel free to copy and paste this text, replacing the underscored important bits.

Code:
Theme: [b]_theme_[/b]

Submissions are due by [b]_day_of_week_, _month_ _date_ at _time_ _timezone_.[/b]

Voting begins _day_of_week_, _month_ _date_ and ends on _day_of_week_, _month_ _date_ at _time_ _timezone_.

1) The theme can be interpreted as you see fit, but keep in mind others will be judging based on whatever criteria they see fit.

2) Only one photo per person, per assignment.
-- Photos must be taken during the assignment period.
-- Only photos to be posted in this thread are to be submissions.
-- You can change your submission by editing your post.
-- To avoid cluttering up the thread, please avoid quoting images.
-- Photos posted in assignment thread should be no larger than 1024 pixels on the long edge. You may include a link to a higher resolution version.

3) One vote for your first choice (3 points) and one vote for your runner-up (1 point), which can be based on any criteria you see fit. You cannot vote for your own submission. Non-participants are also welcome to vote. Criticism/comments encouraged.

4) The "winner" should come up with a new theme/time period. Ties are broken first by the number of first choice votes, then by longest time since last win/thread start, then by longest amount of time participating in assignment threads.

5) Have fun!

Assignments usually run about a week and a half or so, with two days given for voting. Feel free to play with the 5th rule and insert your own words of encouragement.

awesomeness

Q. I'm not as awesome as Squirrel Killer - what can I do about this?

A. Not much I'm afraid, but we're all in the same boat here. His dedication to these threads is above and beyond the call of duty, and we can only dream.

Oh, congrats, Sealsqueal! An awesome shot!

Thanks for the comments, and sorry about not adding my own...

Hope all goes well with your first thread, SealSqueal! and seriously, Squirrel Killer is dedicated. o.o

Since I love hanging out with you photog hogs, I thought I'd let you know that I'll be gone from the next several assignments... doc is going in after baby_monkey tomorrow, so please kick ass, take names, and have photo goodness! I can't wait to catch up when I'm back and see what you guys have done.

Good luck!

Just remember, this is the last night of decent sleep you'll get in... oh, about 18 years. ;)

No, that was several months ago, really, before I became roughly the size and shape of Mercury. Last night, and probably tonight, we were too freaked out/nervous/excited to sleep well on top of everything else.

I remember sleeping well... I think... ;)

Can we get a new topic going? I'm going out of town tomorrow and it would be nice to have a theme in mind while I trek around.

No new topic yet, hahaha. Well, this gives me a good opportunity to get in those comments I said I was getting around to. I should be doing something else at the moment, but I think I'll take a short break. GAF > productivity, alas.

Lucky Forward: Awesome product shot. Looks good enough for an ad. I would only suggest a little fill lighting since some parts of the shot, like right inside the camera lens, are losing some detail and definition from the darkness.

LRS: Nice! Very contrasty, and I like the perpendicular lines contrasted with the diagonal lines and then contrasted additionally by the spot light. Very cool.

AirBrian: Awesome juxtaposition of foreground and background. Also nice job with the contrasting tonal elements to each. The framing is cool too. It reminds me of the BSOD framing.

hey_monkey: This is another nice product shot, although I think there needs to be additional lighting since the current setup doesn't bring out the detail in the mouse enough, methinks. That aside, I like the angle and framing of this shot.

SealSqueal: Very cool, and a nice contrast with color and tone combined. The plains, which would ordinarily be a calming subject, are contrasted quite intensely with the stormy clouds. Nice one!

thatbox: hehehe, nice story too. Interesting subject and setup. Nice inspiration. Lighting is kinda undramatic, though.

giga: Nice contrast with the white controller and dark-ish background.

OnkelC: Contrasty watch! Nice, stark, image.

mrkgoo: Interesting use of long exposure. The Wii seems to be a little fuzzy, and slightly off color. The framing is interesting, though. I think I would have liked to see the LED lights on the consoles be lit up, too.

ScientificNinja: Very sweet shot! I like it a lot. Great concept witht he contrast as a part of the subject itself.

Roi: I like the lines in this one. Nice use of shadow.

Forsete: This reminds me of the boxart for the UK version of Resident Evil 4. Very cool. great exposure on the sky.

rampur: Very nice and abstract. It's hard to believe that's a curtain thing.

Squirrel Killer: I like this one as well. I like the sharpness and contrasty background of this shot. Congrats on the favorite!

aidan: This one is pretty cool as well. Reminds me of the moon. Those dark craters are quite moody. Nice shot.

Tf53: This is a very cool abstract contrast shot as well. I love the tones and gradients and shapes.
