GAF Plays...31 Nights of Horror...3

For some people it just can't work out I guess. I'm probably just gonna rehash things that you already know but just always make sure auto-aim is on in the options. Never play without auto-aim really. I mean sometimes it's not enabled by default. I also tend to find it easier to control with the d-pad than the control stick if that helps.

Well, the newer Fatal Frame games (at least IV, the remake of 2 on Wii and the newest entry on Wii U) all use the standard third person camera as opposed to fixed cameras. The first three Fatal Frame games thankfully for you don't use "tank controls" but they're still rather clunky. I think you're in for a treat anyway, just make sure you play it at night with the lights off. ;)

Appreciate the reactions, and believe me I tried... It's not only aiming I keep moving the wrong way, entering screens I just left etc. I have no issues with any other games including old Silent Hill titles (love them). Also I usually have to inverse my controls in the settings in 3D games so that adds a second layer of confusing with aiming up and down in those first four RE games :/

But anyways looking forward to starting Fatal Frame tonight!

I have this feeling that this gen is (or will be) better for horror fans than last one was. Here's hoping.
Also I'm a huge horror fan, but one sub genre i really don't enjoy is the 'stupid teenager running away from masked killer- slasher' thing. I guess I won't enjoy Until Dawn, right?

I'd still give it a shot if I were you, there's enough diversity in the game, there's more than just the masked slasher running around haha

Thanks to kurisu1974 for pointing out this thread to me in OT, I'm in!

I'll be playing though Until Dawn this month. Hopefully starting tonight.

I'm still slogging my way though MGSV, but once I get that taken care of I also have these waiting to be played:

The Walking Dead - Season 01 (replay)
The Walking Dead - Season 02
The Wolf Among Us
Alien: Isolation
Onechanbara ZII: Chaos
The Last of Us: Remastered (replay, but first time with Remastered)
Wolfenstein: The Old Blood (does that count?)

Depending on how much time I have left in the month after finishing Until Dawn I'll pick something from those titles. Most likely Walking Dead.

Bought REmake yesterday, and my wife is going to play it. First horror game she plays ever, I'm really hyped to see how it goes. I mean, really, really hyped.

Looks like my contribution to this challenge needs to be Corpse Party. Been considering these games for a while. I love VNs and horror, don't know why I haven't played any of them yet.

So my plan of attack will be to grab these on my Vita:

Corpse Party (PSP) HLTB: 10 hours
Corpse Party: Book of Shadows (PSP) HLTB: 13.5 hours

Which should set me to up check out Corpse Party: Blood Drive (Vita) on the 15th. Hopefully this is a decent way to approach the games.

still awesome to see corpse party 3 getting a physical, much less an LE - i loved 1 but slept on 2, i recall shidoshi/others here kinda slagging on the changes it took. any thoughts?

man, i loved the Thing (PS2) but borked my save right before the remaining members of my team all went to shit...should try that again sometime, shit was cool

Corpse Party 2 is a radical change from the first one: the game is even closer to a "true" visual novel. Most of the scenarios are "What-If" and side stories, but they're all extremely disturbing, just like the original.

The final chapter ties directly into CP3, though you can only unlock it by ontaining every wrong end in the game, or having a completed Corpse Party 1 save.

It's definitely worth playing, in my opinion, and has the same great terrifying moments and "surround sound" audio tricks to scare you if you're playing with Headphones.

I've got Corpse Party 3 preordered, can't wait!

damn, that does sound worth playing though! don't know if ill get around to it this october but i do love me some horror VN

Getting into the spirit for the next month, picked up SOMA and Until Dawn this week. If I manage to beat those both I'll probably dip back into Bloodborne since I'm still relatively early on in that game.

Sorry MGS V, you're getting pushed out of regular rotation for the next 31 days.

BTails Plays...31 Nights of Horror 3... NIGHT 1

Alright, so just like last year, I've decided to pair each game with a Pumpkin Beer, as I'm a big beer guy as well as a die hard video game fan. Plus, pumpkin beer is delicious. So, without further ado, here's game number one:

ttR76br.jpg

Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness - Nintendo 64
Paired with: Jumping Jack India Pumpkin Ale from Tree Brewing (Kelowna, BC)

Last year I played through the first Castlevania for N64, having picked up both at the same time and having played neither. I ended up really enjoying it, despite a certain jankiness, but decided that I should wait before playing the "sequel" as I've heard it's really more of an expansion pack than anything. Well, 1 year later here we are!

Time to boot this bad boy up....... Except it's not working! Remove cart, put cart back in... Not working. Double check the S-Video from my N64 is still working, yup another cart boots up. Well, what's Halloween without a little bit of surgery and gore?

Yup, time to dismantle the cart and give the 'ol white vinyl eraser and alcohol bath. Despite a tricky screw on the metal shielding inside the cart, I'm able to clean it pretty quickly and thoroughly. Thankfully I haven't cracked my beer yet, wouldn't want it getting flat/warm. Slap it back together and...

SUCCESS! Time to kick Dracula's ass. Also, time to drink some beer. India Pumpkin Ale is interesting, it's very hoppy in bitter, like any good IPA, but it's also got that distinct pumpkin flavour, and is certainly a lot darker in colour than most IPAs. Pretty good beer, and I'd recommend it, though it'd probably be impossible to find outside of the Western half of Canada (And maybe the Northwest of the States).

The game starts with a cool little cinematic of a girl being chased Evil Dead style through the forest. The opening cinematic is quite good too, love the music, especially when "Beginning" (Aka the Castlevania 3 theme) starts up for a few moments as the main character, Cornell, kicks some butt as his village burns. Just like Castlevania 64 last year, I'm very impressed with the cutscenes in this game: they're very cinematic for a 64 game, and add a lot of atmosphere.

The first level has me fighting my way through a boat (for some reason), before it is attacked by a big sea creature. I escape the sinking boat, and am on my way to dry land when the sea creature comes back as the first boss.

Eat your heart out Kratos, Cornell was killing giant hydra way before you! After this neat and short opening stage, I'm thrown right into a variation of the first stage from the original game, complete with the same giant skeleton boss. The map seems a bit different, but the same mechanics apply: flip switches, open gates, make tricky jumps, kill the skeletons.

Oooooooh spooky. Also, how can you tell if a skeleton's face is in agony and pain? After killing the giant skeleton a second time, I make it into the Castle Wall stage. Except this time, I'm treated to a cool cutscene where Cornell runs into an old friend from his village who looks like Sabretooth from X-Men. He talks about sacrificing a girl from the village to lord Dracula and glows all evil like before walking away: can't wait to fight this dude later.

With that, I turned the game off for the night - only got a couple stages in thanks to the delay of having to perform surgery on the cart. Should get some more in tomorrow evening as my wife has to stay late at work. Still haven't tried the main character's ability to turn into a werewolf - saving it until I hit a really hard boss.

I will be playing:

Condemned: Criminal Origins (PC, as I don't even know where my 360 console is...but I hope it's safe)

Silent Hill 3 (PC again... I don't really want to set up my old PS2 right now, but when I do I'll probably replay every SH game on the platform including stuff like Origins), mostly because Silent Hill 2 for PC has this weird audio looping issue for me where it takes one little sound and loops it indefinitely - otherwise I'd be playing SH2 for surely.

Cry of Fear

Siren: Blood Curse

Playing PT on Halloween night sounds like a great idea too...

I played REmake a bit too recently to commit to another playthrough, but I might give RE2 a go via PS1 classics.

Man, I love Univinvited. I had a copy for my Apple IIgs back in the day - Apple II with VGA equivalent graphics. There were digitized voices too, I remember everytime you died there was this super creepy demonic laugh that played.

Is there a video of that? That sounds awesome!

BTails Plays... 31 Days of Horror... Day 4

Got a chance to play a bit more Castlevania Legacy of Darkness today, getting three more levels beat. Went through the Villa level, which had practically the same layout, but all new puzzles. They took one of the best moments of Castlevania 64, the hedge maze chase from the chainsaw wielding Frankenstein monster, a turned it into an escort mission...

Yeah, because I really wanted to run around this maze for 30 minutes trying to find an exit while the little boy Henry gets stuck on walls. Every five seconds, I had to run around and give a couple quick attacks to the monster to slow him down too. This part SUCKED.

Finally, after that I came to the second new level for Legacy: the Outer Wall. Because everyone knows that the early 3d platforming is the BEST! Lots of jumps, and I made it literally 5 seconds away form the end of the level when I fell to my death because I had to make a blind jump: Fall down one side of the roof = death, the other side = a platform to catch you.

The problem with dying in this game, is it resents your power strength, just like old school Castlevanias. As you can see above, not only did I have level 3 (out of 3) for my main attack, my sub-weapon was also levelled to 3 too. Oh well, the boss was so easy for this level that it didn't matter, it took me about 30 seconds to defeat the harpy waiting for me at the end of this stage.

Next level, "Art Tower" also looks familiar. Even though it sounds like I'm complaining about this game, I'm actually really enjoying it. You just have to look past some of the jankiness that comes with many N64 games.

Great reaction stuff thus far. You know, I actually feel like I don't hear enough about this game. I mean I always hear about how it tries to touch on some of the complaints from CV64 as well as complete the full vision of what the developers wanted for the original but I never hear about if that's a good enough improvement or not. I've played the very beginning a few times but I've never really gotten to the meat of the game to actually make the assessment.

Went with Dracula X SFC for the first game since I want to record this stuff and was having problems figuring out NES recording. I really do want to get into Monster Party.

EDIT: Legacy of Darkness has escort missions? Didn't know that, but I'm glad someone is going in on N64 Vania. Really gets an undeserved bad rap, and I wish 3D vania stayed with 64's style. That being said, I've still got Symphony to tackle before since i'm trying to play in chronological release order.

I'm going to try and play as many of these as I can, probably going to start tomorrow.

1. Alien Isolation

2. The Evil Within

3. Among The Sleep

4. Sylvio

5. Year Walk

6. Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs

Kind of Random, but I finally got round to playing Tekken 5 on my PS3 last night first time, after owning it digitally for a while, and on I think round five, it Randomly chose The Halloween themed stage which was cool

How's SOMA? Worth a price? Already finished Until Dawn, Outlast, Daylight and probably will give another shot to Alien, otherwise there isn't much too choose from on Xone/PS4.

Will play this one on Halloween. Short game anyway. Imported the PSX version from Japan and created a translated ROM to play through Steam Big Picture mode. Works perfect from the comfy couch.

Didn`t finish soma, but so far it is very good. Not a hardcore jumpscarejumpscare horrorgame, but the world it plays is great, also the atmosphere.

What about Resident Evil Remake and Lone Survivor?

I still have yet to start my list as I had a recent influx of busyness but I'll get there eventually. Gonna probably start with Eternal Darkness and work my way on.

Also, I'm loving the recent spike in Clock Tower. Great game but I still haven't ever gotten the S ending.

I have had such an bad time with Dracula X difficulty wise. It's got a really nice presentation with good reworked music but I could barely make it to the middle of stage 2. It was quite unforgiving for me and I just suck anyway heh. Love Rondo though. Maybe you'll have a better time.

Just the one escort mission, I think. And if you don't get lost, like I did, you can probably beat it in 5 min, instead of the 30 it took me. The N64 Castlevanias do get a bad rap; they're not terrible, and thiugh they haven't aged gracefully like Symphony, there's still lits to love there. Music's great, as usual.

so jelly, btails! enjoy man - and yeah, perfect game for the season as well

Yeah, I actually beat it about 7 years ago on my laptop on a crappy SNES emulator. Looking forward to replaying it on actual hardware!

I'm working on getting my play through uploaded now. I actually beat the game first time through, but I think it has infinite continues? Had good amount of retries near the end. It's got some good qualities but so pretty anticlimactic compared to pc engine or even IV. There are a lot of cheap spots.

Special delivery from Krikzz today!!

I need a new Micro SD card for the Everdrive MD as it doesn't like the current one I have, but the Super Everdrive works like a dream. Now, to finish Castlevania so I can start on my next horror game...

The original CT is one of the best Horror ever, so tragically underplayed. :(

This thread reminds me that I need to pick up Alien Isolation (when it goes on sale).

A few games that I might play this month:

Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse 1989, NES:

55043-Castlevania_III_-_Dracula%27s_Curse_%28USA%29-1.jpg

I've been itching to play through this one again. It seems like it would be a fun challenge.

Silent Hill 2, 2001 PS2/ PC
sh2_7g6lsg.png

Honestly, despite having played through the original Silent Hill countless times, I have never played Silent Hill 2 or 3. I don;t know why I missed these two. It is on my bucket list of games to play. I have a copy for the PS2, but I may try to run it on an emulator.

Ghostbusters 2009, PC.

Still great fun, and it looks and runs great on PC in higher resolutions. Game really is a lot of fun to play, and they did capture the feeling of playing as the 5th Ghostbuster.

OutLast 2013, PC/ Steam:

header.jpg

This one has been sitting in my Steam account for almost a year now unplayed. I may give it a go.

Dead Space 3 2013, PC/ Origin:

EA gave me this free as an apology for the disaster that was Sim City. I have yet to play it, despite playing the first two. I may give it a go.

I've had my eyes on Ghostbusters II famicom, but I've always wondered if the last gen game was good.

It's pretty great overall. The level design is fairly linear, but the proton gun/ ghost trap mechanics are all handled really well. There are also some nice gameplay variation that gets incorporated into the game later on. The game does a good job incorporating the entire original cast and it does create a nice illusion that you are part of a team. The game does a good job of capturing the feel of the movies, and even has a lot of music that was lifted right out of the first film.

Some of the voice acting though isn't perfect (Bill Murray was a little spotty), and the story felt a little rushed in its conclusion. Alyssa Milano's character felt a little slapped in. Graphically, it is a last gen game, and even back then the character models looked a little clunky. But overall, the game is good fan service and it plays well. It is still a solid example of a licensed game done right. Generally the PC version is the way to go for the single player game, IMO. But there is also a Wii version with two player co-op.

Definitely sounds worth looking into, maybe even more so the Wii version for co-op. You should really get on Silent Hill 2 though, its a great experience.

Thanks to the some posters in this thread I persisted, and I took up Alien: Isolation again in the weekend, decided not to be a pussy and hide everywhere... finally got past the point I was kinda stuck and then found the flamethrower. Game becomes a *lot* easier after that point, and I made it to Mission 15 without much trouble.

Really love the game too, especially the sound design.

Hopefully I'll finish this tonight or tomorrow, then it's on to Fatal Frame!

ya'll make me think SNES clock tower is a shoe-in for my next year's list

i really dug Ghostbusters (replayed it not too long back! just wish it had co-op), but man are you in for a treat with SH 2 & 3.

Do it, SNES Clock Tower is great. Just bring a pad of paper, because you're going to have to draw a map as you play.

Also, Silent Hill 2 is my third favourite game of all time. What an amazing experience.

I'm really behind on this but I got my first WRONG END in Corpse Party last night. Probably one of the first ones you can get:
the one that takes place in the bathroom, shortly after you guys camp out in the infirmary
. That was harsh. It's amazing how quickly you get attached to the characters, probably because of how adorable and weird they are. At least the ones in the first chapter.

This is going to be tough.
