Galactic Civilizations II, anyone playing it?

Just curious, i liked the first one and i remember there being a few people here that liked it too. Anyone give the sequel a try?

It's a pretty good game, but way too much like the original, so if you didn't like it or don't want more of the same, skip this one. Master of Orion 2 remains undefeated.

MOO2 was not that good. At the time, sure, but I went back and played it recently, and the pacing is terrible.

The ship-building and combat is still better than in any of the sequels and clones, though.

From the previews, GC2 looks a lot like the first one, so I will pass.

I'm picking this up Wednesday. I don't know what all of you are talking about, the reviews so far point to a fantastic game. The biggest knock it has NO multiplayer, but I can live with that. The game is developed and published by an independent studio, Stardock, so they deserve all the support we can give them.

PC Game World 90/100

After spending a significant portion of the last week playing Galactic Civilizations 2, I can honestly say that it is one of the best strategy games I've played recently. The depth of gameplay offered is truly remarkable and the AI is good enough to almost make me forget that there is no multiplayer (almost).

Next Level Gaming 95/100

Before I give you final conclusion you might have noticed that I did not mention anything about the graphics in the game for my score brake-down. The reason for this is that this is not what the game is about, and to judge it on that would be unfair (I have left out categories for other games, like storyline for racing games). If you are the type of gamer that has to have the cutting edge of graphics in order to enjoy a game, you are missing a lot of great games, and this will be one of them. However, if you are like me and love a good strategy game then defiantly get your hands on a copy of this title, you will not be disappointed, I know I wasn’t. Just for the record, this is one of the highest scores I have ever given a game, so you know I’m a huge fan.

Dunno, from where I stand it's still second only to original MoO as far as 4x games go.
The things that keep it from the top are too much micromanagement and weaker game balance (AI is just not challenging enough once you've figured them out).

Anyway - for a REALLY good MoO clone, you should all check Space Empires 4 - it's everything MoO3 should have been and more, it's a shame about the weak AI which permamently keeps it out of top 2 for me.

GalCiv games are decent, but if you're a fan of strategic space battles, Civ style fighting of units just doesn't cut it.

... But now that I'm reading about this new one, it looks like it changes that, I may just have to take a look :)

I've been playing it for a week, and I like it quite a lot. It plays similar to the first one, but it is improved in pretty much every regard. Its really a much better game and a much fuller experience than the first game ever was. I'd say it compares very favorably to the spirit of MOO2.

The only problem Ive had with it so far are a couple of bugs, but none of which really affect gameplay. My review thus far 8.5/10.

Download this game and support Stardock, because this is a worthy title, especially coming from a small independent studio.

I'm going to get it eventually, but I just got Empire at War and that is satisfying my space strategy jones. The first one was underrated.

I planned on taking a look at it once I get past Empires at War. If not for the really crappy ground combat engine that game would be a Game of the Year nominee.

If you guys haven't seen... Gamespot gave it a 9.0

The Good: Extremely customizable gameplay provides superb replayability; the best ai in strategy gaming; very cool ship designer that significantly contributes to gameplay; truly viable variable victory conditions; will keep you up all night playing "just one more turn".

The Bad: No multiplayer; tech tree could use more information on new techs.

I'm still enjoying it a lot, but it does seem drag in the endgame a bit (I probably just need to put the diff up a bit though) :D

Wow, I'm going to have to check this out. MOO2 was great, but at least on paper, this seems plainly superior. The AI and customizability as described in the review, by itself, would put this above any other 4X space game.
