As much as I am looking forward to this, I just can't see myself paying £16 for it, take out American tax and we're still paying over a £1 more that's without the US discount at launch. N++ had a universal discount :(

Decided to download the game again since I was paranoid that I somehow grabbed the preview build when I preloaded.

14 hours left. No matter how many times I pause and unpause.

God I fucking hate PSN.

run the connection test under internet setitngs a few times and see if that helps. You have to force the PS4 to disconnect from PSN sometimes to make the speeds go up.

It's a PS4 problem, I have normal speeds on PS3 and even on the Vita in the same network, only PS4 crawls at 100 kbs half the time

Up to 4-4, go back to title screen and the game crashes. Boot it back up and now my progress is lost for the season. I'm loving the gameplay and mechanics but the framerate and technical hiccups are a serious bummer.

Losing progress is so infuriating.

Dang I hadn't considered that. Roguelikes seriously need good autosave if they're going to be fussy about not manually saving.

As long as you have a patch you should have been good. I'll double check my version when I get home though, I went from the preview build to full without deleting.

They really should have coordinated this with SCEE, since N++ had a last minute launch discount too.

Downloads are way faster in rest mode for me. With the PS4 fully on the download estimate was 4 hours. In rest mode it took 20 minutes.

Surprised more reviews haven't dropped by now. Wonder if reviewers are having a hard time blasting through the game in such a short time frame given its difficulty curve?

Or is everyone just preoccupied by Gamescom?

I was looking for that option next. Where is it?
- Turn the PS4 off.
- Hold power button (on the console) until you hear 2 beeps then release, you are now in safe mode
- Connect your controller by USB
- Select Rebuild Database
- Wait for it to finish

Nothing will be deleted (unless something's corrupted I guess)

Looking at the trophy data it appears getting to 3-1 is a pretty big hurdle.

I've been working on getting past 2-5 since yesterday evening :/

The boss is a pain, work on disabling the guns ASAP, toss the plugs into the boss (the shock brings down his shield), and keep your goddamn distance. Do not use robot mode more than you need to remove the plugs. The asshole can hit you twice in a row if he gets close so just play it extremely safe and stay at the opposite side of the room at all times. Dash away and to the side if he's charging you, he dashes straight.

Use every last missile on him immediately, you lose them at the end of the season anyway. I think you only have to wait for two lock ons each volley.

Also be insanely careful not to lose health before that boss. If it gets a single hit it's very likely it's going to hit twice and thus deal hull damage.

i just melee charged the 2-5 boss. in fact, i've melee charged everything since i got it. helps with the 100% damage upgrade
Can you stun that boss with the shield bash? I wasn't going to try it. I was getting better with the mech but wasn't about to risk anything in a boss fight.

100% damage upgrade? IS there a blueprint for that? Haven't seen that dropped yet at all. The upgrades I've gotten so far have been pretty limited, and were mostly the same between season 1 and 2.

I also can't tell if blueprints are 100% random or what. I randomly got one after killing an enemy once, not sure if certain upgrades require X enemy kills or what.

not sure if you can stun the boss but you can block incoming attacks.
pretty sure the upgrades are random. i just search every area before completing an episode. i like how it encourages exploration that way. never had a blueprint drop from an enemy.

I'm at 2-3 now and I don't think I've experienced a similar level of finger cramping since Kid Icarus: Uprising. I try to use index on R1 and middle on R2 to be most efficient in combat, but it can be a real strain with how stressful individual encounters can be.

Fortunately, the synergy of dual ship/mech encounter approaches and risk/reward currency system makes the hand contorting worth it. It forces you to treat every dogfight like it's your last along with deciding if the small cash reward is worth going out of your way. Upgrades aren't too expensive or too cheap either, so every purchase has weight. It all makes for a smartly designed uphill battle with plenty of nuance in its controls.

Unfortunately, the writing hasn't really grabbed me, and it's been fairly easy to tune dialogue out in the heat of intense battles. I enjoy the old VHS anime OVA presentation though. But it was quickly apparent to me that the mechanics were the real draw.

I'm very impressed with this so far, especially so after not really resonating with Skulls of the Shogun years back.

Do you need to be on both boost and normal thrust at the same time though? I find boost + brake/reverse + inertia (pepper in some strafing every now and then) is more than enough to get around. I only use the normal thrust for those really tight areas with environmental hazards.

While I'm usually just boosting outside of combat, I find myself trying to be extra careful because of the hazards and wanting to keep a good distance from enemies. I try to get the jump on them whenever I can, so having fingers on boost, thrust, and reverse has worked out well enough so far.

Still trying to get the hang of sliding though. It feels very squirrely.

But if you're using R1 you don't need R2. That's why it's smart that they placed the buttons the way they did

This game is going to take some getting used to but I like what I've played so far.
Took me about an hour to get comfortable and be able execute a string of moves without getting flustered. The only thing that throws me off now is tying to reverse boost while shooting in the heat of combat (which is a really useful move).

R1 + R2 has just always been an uncomfortable way to hold a controller IMO, so I try to avoid it. My playstyle in combat is fairly aggressive, so boost + juke for those on the fly guerrilla tactics are more important to me than carefully positioning myself with just the thrusters. When I need to slow down I simply let inertia do its thing and use the brakes (R2 + L2) for precision.

Bit too much for my old brain and fingers, too many buttons and too much on screen!

Still can't get past season 1.....
Just need to build up a bit more muscle memory. though nothing will help with the too much on screen part if you can't follow things in Season 1. It gets a lot worse later on in that department I'm afraid. But keep trying! The mech in season 2 is definitely worth experiencing, even if you can't progress further.

My biggest problem with the controls is I've been playing a lot of Rocket League, and the controls are just close enough that they throw me off switching between the two games. RL made me forget not everyone allows you to customize controls on consoles. Can't believe that's not a standard already. I might have to change my setup in that game just so it synergizes better with Galak-Z.

If you really had to you could rebind the buttons on ps4.

Doesn't this have a control option in the menu? I didn't check what it did because I'm perfectly fine with it

Use R1 to boost in combat, use R2 to casually move. You shouldn't be moving around with R2 and trying to boost at the same time. Especially since you can basically constantly boost. The boost button is more for reverse/strafe boosting.

I tried to use R1 and R2 at first too, but you really shouldn't ever try to use both

Galak-Z is the very definition of awesome. Playing it makes me feel like the badass intergalactic pilot I always dreamed of being as a kid, and I love it even more because it makes me work for that ecstasy. No battle is scripted, nothing is choreographed – my skills do all the talking. 17-Bit’s physics-based space roguelike is a truly special experience on PS4, one that has the potential to become the flagship indie title on a platform bursting with incredible creations. It rewards patience, skill and creativity, and absolutely deserves your time regardless of your relationship with ’80s anime or 2D shooters.

This has somehow completely escaped my attention, but I've just watched the GB EX QL and I'm all in. Will pick up in the morning and add to my growing indie backlog...
