Penguin is essentially like an innovation award. Gotten for "testing the waters" and allowing other devos to go where you've now gone. Apparently the winner created the first MUD.

The I love bees award is rather pathetic. It is not the first time something like that has been used for a game release.

Lifetime Achievement: Eugene P. Jarvis
This is just awesome. Great pick on this one.

These are good awards, i love bees was rather cool (I didn't partake) but why give marketing an award?

Eugene P. Jarvis is the man.

I'll never forget the time I got to meet Jarvis at GDC. Certainly one of my game geek high points on my game geek checklist of life accomplishments :D.

ARG: Alternate Reality Game

I totally agree with this one. Lots of folks here blew it off, but that site sucked in thousands. It was a well engineered game.

I interviewed MGS's director of marketing about the ILB campaign.

Most interesting bit:

"It has definitely exceeded our expectations. In addition to the immeasurable office cooler buzz and the countless message board posts, over 2 million unique users have visited the ilovebees site. It has also mobilized a fan base to go out into the real world and promote the product in unusual ways. We've received pictures of fans recruiting strangers on busy streets, pictures of fans answering payphones dressed in full scuba gear, and we've even seen fans waving ILB banners on CNN at the presidential debates
