Gamekult editor on graphical differences between the Zelda Switch/Wii U version

Now we have two shitty versions of the game !

Wii U: downgraded visually and no feature on the gamepad to not compete with the Switch version
Switch: bad performances because it's just a port from the Wii U version ...

Nintendo isn't Nintendo anymore

What O_O they removed all the lighting effects of the previous videos from the Wii U version...

It now looks exactly like the switch version in the pictures comparing Wii U and Switch versions ... Like they didn't whant the Wii U version to look and feel superior to the switch version ...

Downgrade confirmed !

Always had the feeling something had to give for a portable device.

I always thought light entering the entrance to the cave was a bit of an odd thing, since the sun rises/sets on a different location than from the entrance.

For the pedestal pics, isn't it more of a case of screen grabs with different gamma/black crush color settings?

It's not only a piss filter, but the whole lighting engine seems stepped down ... No light on the floor when the door is opened, only a simple ambient lighting in the cave, instead of multiple lightsources, no blue light illuminating link ...

Not the first time lighting has changed from beta to release. Maybe Nintendo finally listened to everyone who wanted Zelda to be like Dark Souls Too.

The lighting effects were never going to be there since the Switch version doesn't have them. This was probably an engine problem, or maybe a difference in architecture.
Still disappointing, since those shrines aren't really THAT good to look at, and the lighting added a lot.

Seriously, this first cave used to look so great, so moody !

This is really disappointing.

My guess is that the lighting used some fixed functions on the Wii U that weren't quite good to adapt to the NVidia architecture of the Switch so they had to remove it to not make the Wii U version look superior in any way.

If we are very lucky, they just need more time and they add it in the DLC. I wouldn't get my hopes up though.

It's a little weird because isn't Switch supposed to be more powerful than Wii U ?

I think the more rational explanation is that the WiiU has performance issues to begin with, and in the optimization process things got downgraded a little. The downgrades are across both versions but the Switch demos always used the most recent builds. Meanwhile we only had older footage of the WiiU version since they stopped demoing it.

It is. Downgraded lightning doesn't mean the whole game was downgraded. The draw distance has been considerably improved, even on Wii U. Before, Death Mountain and other landmarks in the distance were just silhouette, now you can actually see them, with lava and everything.

I think they just tweaked some things here and there. Saying they downgraded the Wii U version because of the Switch would make more sense if the Wii U version didn't run like shit as is.

Wooow they downgraded the Wii u version hahaha.

I'm so confused as to what platform I should buy this for. My Zelda Wii u is $40 cheaper and I don't care for portable Zelda. But with all these downgrades I'm confused.

I'm dying because people have been vehemently saying that the Wii u version was not downgraded in favour of the switch version in previous threads smh. Feature and graphically I feel like it was done to accomodate the handheld form factor

Even though the Switch is much more powerful in docked mode they needed to get the undocked version at parity or better than the Wii U version. Time constraints to get the Switch version ready for launch could easily have forced some downgrades to the Wii U version.

Yeah seems like it. I'm guessing it was really tanking the framerate, so they made some changes.

So the game is not good because it has technical issues on an old platform?

Was performance always like this for Wii U during the events? Like at e3?

Not like it's described in the OP. Check the DF analysis of the E3 demo.

So either the OP is true and Nintendo practically lied with all the videos and demos or the OP is hyperbolic and we will find out a somewhat different story from the DF analysis.

What is certain so far is that both version have a ton of aliasing and some framerate drops with Wii U having more drops and a lower native resolution.

Honestly I think people are overreacting.

The drops seem to be in the same places as the Switch version, albeit slightly more severe.

I very much doubt it'll be unplayable, otherwise Edge wouldn't have awarded the Wii U version a 10 as well.

It will be fine.

I watched a few minutes of the Wii U version. It didn't appear any worse, framerate-wise, than what was shown at E3. If you watched footage back then and thought it looked fine, you're going to be alright.

This makes exactly zero sense considering the Wii U is much weaker than even the handheld mode of the Switch.

Wii u old lighting and probably drop in tens... who would want that ?

It didn't happen in the E3 demo though.

My guess is that the lighting used some fixed functions on the Wii U that weren't quite good to adapt to the NVidia architecture of the Switch so they had to remove it to not make the Wii U version look superior in any way.

I wonder if it's any merit to this speculation. It was long rumoured and debated that Wii U had some specialised GPU customisation. And the light is pretty nice in a quite a number of Wii U games.

It's not only drops though.

I don't know if EDGE can be trusted on this.

not in those scenes

The game consists of more than just those scenes and the old lightning in all likelihood caused issues elsewhere, so that they decided to change it on a global level.

It's part of the optimization process and this sort of thing happens all the time. I honestly don't see what's the big fuss is about.

This quote ist totally ripped out of context. You are talking about technical stuff. The quote is about the game and the design itself.

Does the game have dynamic weather in caves now?

I like people going complotism...
if they changed it in caves odds they did is more likely because how it's made and performance impact at some point than some complot for parity to push people on switch.

I'm more curious about the pop-in as it's sort of bad on the Wii U. My hunch is that it's bad on both versions but I would like a DF video on it.

Switch has bad performances overall? I saw a small framerate drop in the GameXplain video in docked mode but I didn't know the performance were that bad...handheld mode seemed flawless though.

It's far from being as bad as some people think. Biggest framerate issues are tied to the Plateau and it gets better as soon as you leave it.
The guy you quoted is just trolling.
