Games that contain traces of other games

I often wonder if developers are inspired by each other's work to the point of using literal examples:

And in this case it would appear Intelligent Systems was inspired by Nintendo EAD. Sometimes it's less obvious (or worse, a total ripp-off), but it's still fun to pick out random things from games that may or may not have been influenced by other game designers.

On that note, what games have you noticed to have traces of other games?

Not really the same thing, but Resident Evil 1, 2, CV and Zero borrow a lot from the final scenes of Aliens:

Base is about to self destruct, hero goes in alone on an elevator armed to the teeth with weapons, about to confront a giant monster.

The first stage of Viewtiful Joe on DS is a beautiful hommage to resident evil. You get a revamped hall from the first RE mansion and portraits of Leon and Claire as VJ bad guys and the music too!

Psycho Mantis in MGS1 would mention the other Konami game's you've played if you had savefiles on your PSOne memory card.

Everything or Nothing and Nightfire used the NFS Engine in some parts.

Kid Icarus contained a metroid called kometo (presumably from 子メトロイド, meaning child metroid), Kid Icarus also was developed on the same engine as Metroid.

Mother Brain in the Blood Furnace in WoW.

WoW has a ton of references. Video games specifically, they reference Diablo, Starcraft, Mario Bros, and Zelda. I think there is more, but those pop into my head.

I realize that, but most are done as spoofs or elaborate references. The Mother Brain/Metroids strike me as unique in that they are simply there. There's no snarky text or name to include in the reference, it's just you pick it up or you think they are based off that shitty Doom monster. It's more of an "inspired by" thing than a "we are making a pop culture reference here" deal.

Thats what sprang to mind when I read the OP. Never noticed the paintings though. Music bought back memories, I think a few hairs on my neck tingled too.

I've never made a secret of the influence other games had on the games I helped make.

TY 2 GBA:

- Swinging on a rope over an alligator (Pitfall)
- Fourbie minigame: Use the Fourbie to knock other cars off the road (Bump 'n' Jump)
- Map screen: Avoid enemies while you move around linear paths (Pac-Man)
- Enter the Konami code to unlock stuff

TY 3 GBA:

- The sidescrolling shoot 'em up sections were inspired by Gradius
- The first level has you moving through a maze, setting off a bomb and escaping as quickly as possible (Super Metroid)
- Probably tons of other bits I can't remember :)

The Legend Of Spyro: A New Beginning

- First line of the design doc was "It's Final Fight meets Contra" :)
- Advent Rising (Free Demi)

I have original ideas in these games too, honest!

In Shadow of the Colossus, if you go to the southwestern edge of the map, there is a beautiful beach that looks just like the one in ICO's ending

It was also made by the same guy who made Metroid.

GUNPEI! :)

FuryÂł which was like a total rip-off of terminal Velocity
I believe it was actually developer by Terminal Reality (creators of Terminal Velocity) using the same engine. There was a sequel to both of these known as Hellbender as well.

FuryÂł was essentially Terminal Velocity for Win95. 95 gaming was getting a huge push at the time, if you recall, so it acted as a semi-sequel to TV.

RE4 contains traces of DMC1. The architecture of some of the areas including sewers, castles and indoor areas are reminescent of DMC1.

you know DMC1 started out as Resident Evil 4 right?

The countless games where Mario has been inserted into Nintendo games. Pilotwings 64, 3 different Zeldas (LttP, Oot and MM), Donkey Kong 64 and even Sim City on the SNES (in statue form). There are probably dozens of other examples.

Onimusha 3 reminds me of a cross between Zelda and Resident Evil. The parts with Samanosuke and Tengu are like Link and Navi, plus you can use a sword and bow in both games. Then there's the part with the French chick in the Zoo, it's like a different direction that Resident Evil could have taken. SPOOKY STUFF!

And on another tangent - Shenmue + arcade games.

Sonic's little dancing bit at the end of each stage of Sonic Rush was an obvious nod to the music composer's recent projects.

Z.O.E. models found in the office of Granin in Snake Eater.

Mario character models in the lab(?) versus Ninja in Twin Snakes.

Viewtiful Joe whistles the Mario theme while handling a bomb.

The Vic motha****in' Viper in Z.O.E. 2.

Both games also have invisible insects in their sewers, as well as a later section containing dinosaur/dragon heads that breath fire. I wonder how much of their original design was kept over the iterations of RE4. With cutscenes and notes essentially giving the whole plot, you can basically leave the actual story until right at the very end of development.

One of my personal favourites is Legend of Legaia. One of the NPC's character theme is the Game Over music from Alundra. It's random and I totally like it.

I haven't played it in many years so I forget the name of the boss, but in Megaman X4 they have a robot designed to fight like Ryu. It was the Saturn version, I don't know if the PS/SS versions are different.

In World of Warcraft you have a quest line for a guy named "Linken"

During this quest you find his backpack that has a compass, map and key and if you finish it out you can choose between "Linken's Sword" or "Linken's Boomerang".

Mario and Luigi also make an appearance as Larion and Muigin (remove the 'n' and swap the first letter on the two names):
