GameSpot's best 3DS games of 2016

Ace Attorney 6 is better than fucking Kirby

But otherwise I agree. Some good stuff this year on 3DS. I bought DQ7 and I wouldn't put it on here either.

DQ7 is a big omission, especially since SMT and Rhythm Heaven are both rereleases to some degree as well.

Good games represented though

Rhythm Heaven being in this list makes my heart happy. It's such a fun game. List seems solid, I feel like I have to play Apocalypse as soon as I can (loved SMTIV)

No way. The only game better than Kirby on that list is Pokémon.

um did no one tell them that dragon quest vii came out or

As much as I loved Dragon Quest VII it's really clunky, huge, simple and not really for everyone. It's also a 2013 3DS game and it really shows

Edit: Rhythm Heaven is also not a re-release, it's a compilation with new games thrown in togheter

The 3DS was a JRPG goldmine this year. So many great games especially towards the end of the year.

Probably one of the greatest sendoffs a system could received seeing the end is very close.

All good inclusions, the only ones I could see taking a spot there are Ace Attorney 6 or Dragon Quest VII.

I think it'll either go to Pokémon Sun and Moon or a surprise choice like Kirby Planet Robobot.

Totally agree. I feel like Ace Attorney is one of those series that always gets praise when games come out but it's quickly forgotten in a few months.
I think this is when someone is supposed to jump in and say something about how it's digital only, but they didn't forget about how great Megamix was 😒

Kirby games I swear. Maybe they wanted more than one game with a Smash Bros character or else people would call them too hipstery.

There were 5 3DS games in 2016?
Not a good joke. While that joke was made a lot in the Wii U thread because the Wii U was legit barren in 2016, 3DS had several legitimately great games release this year and still has multiple ports and new first party releases planned for 2017. It's like saying "there were 5 PS4 games in 2016?", just kind of a dumb thing to say.

SMT4:A? If that counts as one then most of the Mega Man games are re-releases (though maybe SMT4:A recycles areas more heavily than I assume?) Nevermind that DQVII did hit the US before, officially, unlike V and VI.

3DS 2016 was way better than 2015.

Fire Emblem Fates
Rhythm Heaven Megamix
Pokémon Sun and Moon
Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past
Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse
Kirby: Planet Robobot
Bravely Second: End Layer
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice
BOXBOXBOY!
Picross 3D Round 2
Pocket Card Jockey
Gotta Protectors
Monster Hunter Generations
Zero Escape: Zero Time Dilemma
7th Dragon III Code: VFD
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam

It was a pretty good year. 3DS is looking to have a good seven-year lifespan - I expect that the 3DS could have a decent 2017, maybe even 2018.

Is Mario Maker not even worth it without the MP component?

I want more 3DS games. I hope Nintendo don't think it's dead after Switch. This holiday was KILLER for 3ds. Make use of that large bump in install base.

Fire Emblem Conquest is my GOTY.

I really need to get SMT, just waiting for that Altus discount.

Also is Kirby really that good?

It's my second favorite Kirby game after Super Star, and I've played every platform game.

Yeah, MM is kinda not worth it without it.

great list. id replace rhythm heaven with 7th dragon III though. rhythm heaven was fun for a few hours. deleted.

Looked at the plot to 7th Dragon III, looks interesting, saw it was developed by Sega whereas in the past it was made by the evil imageepoch

Is the plot a parallel to rescuing the series from the evil imageepoch dragon??

Jesus I didn't even realise that this was just 2016. What a beast. I swear there's not a single bad game on that list (aside from Mario & Luigi which wasn't bad, just bland and vanilla as hell)

Super Star is by far the best one and it's still Nintendo's worst major platforming series so that's not really saying much.

Hoo boy

Demo of Kirby was nice. I think I still love dreamland 2 and 3 best. I'd love a new stab at the 64 game concept of mixing powers. I want more permutations to powers and the robot and pet versions of powers was great. How long is the new Kirby?

Shame about MM as Nintendo might misinterpret why no sales. Hopefully the Yoshi port fares better.

Does SMT4:A improve on the world map at all? I ended up stopping with SMT4 because I just couldn't find where I was supposed to go, as stupid as that sounds. Loved the game apart from that awful map.

It's on sale for $30 new at GameStop this week.

Its been at that price at amazon for a while now too

Yeah its improved in pretty much every way. Landmarks are named, zoom in, even an objective marker if you want it.

Yes, it does (locations are properly labeled now).

Ah, I see. I kept seeing it for $40 there, so I didn't notice they brought it down recently. Seems they're out of stock at the moment, though.

Remember when Monster Hunter 4U was their Feb 2015 game of the month, but then didn't make it onto the game of the year top 25 when other games from that month did.
Wtf how gross. MH4U was amazing throughout last year. The free dlc missions and items kept me coming back through the whole year.

Yep. It's way easier to navigate and the game always tells you where your next objective is.

How Long to Beat says 7h, which seems right to me, but that's just the main story without hunting for collectibles. Robobot is still very "modern Kirby" and nowhere like 3, but it's a really nice refresher from Return to Dreamland and Triple Deluxe, it really has it's own unique difference (not saying that I hate these two)

I don't count Wario as a major Nintendo platforming series.

You not only managed to be wrong once but twice

Hoo boy

It's certainly no Sticker Star at least.

The Bravely Second snubs are killin' me. That's what happens when the second half of your first game is total shit.

Pocket Card Jockey got robbed.

My 3DS GOTY. Compared to their list of 5 titles it was the only new IP and it succeded in doing something creative and exciting with one of the blandest, oldest card games ever.

Man, Atlus really failed marketing SMT4A.

They adopted Nintendo's "brilliant" naming convention.

That's actually a super solid list of games and 4 of them are probably in my top 10 GotY list too. Glad to see Planet Robobot get some recognition. My favorite Kirby game in a while. ;;
