Empire Total War for best strategy game? What a travesty-it is basically a single player only (except for the battles, which is actually not where the "meat" of the TW games are) game where the AI doesn't know how to play the game at all. Totally busted at release and only marginally better now, but still a downright terrible pick.

If they wanted something that was both A) attractive so it would be pretty for their videos and b) was really worthy of the award, they could have given it to Anno 1404 or Men of War instead. Or they could have tossed off the pretty requirement and given it to the new EU3 expansion or AI War: Fleet Command.

Being fair, they also had Fat Princess on there. And to a lesser extend but Halo Wars which is about as primitive of a Strategy game you can get.

PS. I am going to end up caving and continuing to be part of the problem for Napoleon:TW when it comes out just because I am a sucker for that stretch of history.

In all seriousness though, if you just want a good looking strategy game where you can walk all over your opponents and feel good about yourself even though you don't really know what the hell you're doing, Total War is the place to be. That must count for something to some people, it's the only way I can see the praise this game is getting justified in any way-I wish they'd just come out and admit it!

Those are the most random nominees for Best New IP ever. Borderlands seems such an obvious choice for winner of that category it's insane it wasn't even nominated.

Yes, but not when you have quite a few extremely high quality strategy games out there. Specifically the ones Frag mentioned. It feels more like they just had to add in stuff there to include consoles, instead of going with the best.

Halo Wars isn't bad. For being on consoles and actually working well with the controller. It was nice. Primitive might not have been the best word. Maybe limiting, restrictive, shallow, etc. Take your pick.

Oh, you're absolutely right. It was a great year for strategy, they shouldn't have nominated games like Fat Princess and Halo Wars. But when Empire: Total War, which in its broken state was easily the disappointment of the year, is not only nominated but also the winner, I can't help but focus my attention on that.

I concur with that. I was actually agree. I was just adding in that the entire list didn't seem to have much quality in it to begin with. :lol

How does it make no sense? Best new IP is just an award for the best game that wasn't in an already established franchise. DS happened to be that game this year.

You may be able to help me out here being a big strategy game player, I am looking for a good in depth historical naval combat strategy game. any suggestions?

I'm not a huge strategy gamer, but Halo Wars was the first strat game since Starcraft to really hook me.

It's streamlined and not 'hardcore' but it's actually a very very well designed game. A lot of fun, and pretty balanced. The online was very fun.

Their descriptions of both are fucking hilariously stupid. Fat Princess is something like "This might seem a strange choice, but we assure you if you are losing very badly at this game it's probably because you don't have a good strategy". Halo Wars is "Halo started out as an RTS, so it's natural for an RTS to be made of it. Still, it's surprising they managed to make an RTS out of it."

Fat Princess is awesome. Loads of people online, the free map DLC New Pork is really fun and new DLC is on the way. Its brutal, cute, rewarding, frustrating and addictive all in one.

Plus, the 'soccer' games are fun. They just get crazily gory.

No.
Fat Princess is terrible. Basically a shallow frag fest where most flash games have more content.
Halo Wars is decent...if you understand the idea that playing on a controller means you have to severely gimp the game and genre entirely.

I'd say don't waste your time with either.

:lol I really, really doubt that anyone at Gametrailers plays EU3 or AI War: Fleet Command.

Probably not Men of War either. Maybe Anno 1404. Maybe.

I'm not much of a naval person-even in board wargaming I don't play the naval games all that often. I've heard good things recently about Warship Combat: Navies at War for the more modern setting, but I don't know of anything for the Age of Sail era-the last Age of Sail 2 game maybe? East India Company's naval combat wasn't too bad after patches but it was still pretty lightweight.

If you have a friend around and don't mind nerding all up in front of a table to play a game, I watched some guys play 1805: Sea of Glory and it looked totally awesome.

Yeah, but would have it been really all that hard to even just read the last five or six pages of the E:TW thread at any respectable PC gaming watering hole before slapping that up there? I'm fine with choices ( like the original IP one ) being a matter of taste, but this is sort of a 'deerrrr we have no idea what we are talking about' sort of situation.

Best New IP is the best title for the category. A new IP is exactly that: a game that isn't a sequel to anything. You're applying meaning to it that doesn't belong.

1805 looks awesome, but I do not know a single person who is into age of sail, let alone one that would play a crazy tabletop game. One day someone will make the Hearts of Iron of the sea.

Wow all kinds of fail so far, especially on the strategy games front. Christ if they wanted some uber casual friendly nominee instead of Fat Princess (which is not a strategy game) they could have put Plants vs. Zombies in there.

Also not even nominating stuff like Borderlands and Brutal Legend for new IP is ridiculous.
