GameXplain's excellent analysis of Splatoon 2's Hero Mode (only 36 minutes — for eel)

Yes, the "only" 36 minutes bit is cheeky. It always amazes me how much they find in a trailer.

The full analysis is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYY8pMf05VU

There's so much to unpack! I'm especially impressed by the environmental details they found, such as the alternate power sources in the absence of the Great Zapfish — i.e. the solar panels on Crusty Sean's food truck in Inkopolis Square, the generators around Marie's shack in Octo Valley, etc.

I do think they might be wrong about the heavy Inkling on the unicycle being a mini-boss or strong enemy. Seems like a boss to me, even if he differs from past bosses by being a proper Octarian rather than a mechanical contraption.

That "Octo Oven" boss is amazing, though. I didn't realize the Octarians popping out of it resembled baked loaves of bread. Toasty!

Derrick is quite possibly the nicest human being on the Internet, so give his video a look!

What, you disagree with me or with GameXplain? Looks like a boss to me:

No power eggs or platforming that I can see in its arena. It may not be a giant stamp or leaky faucet or other mechanical contraption, but they closed the trailer with it and it's massive, and clearly in an arena, so I'm thinking it's a boss. Not sure why Derrick concludes it's a mini-boss, but other than that, I think he's on point.

That'd mean we've seen two bosses so far: The "Octo Oven" and "Octo Cycler." Or I guess three if you count the poster glimpse of Callie.

When snake comes back to smash I better get a 30 minute video from gamexplain about it.
Oh man. If there's any justice in the world, Sakurai will have secured this after Nintendo cozied up to Konami with Super Bomberman R.

I like how the "neon" stage has lava lamps colored like Callie and Marie :-O

Ha, that's how their analysis of the E3 2014 Zelda trailer felt

This is how little I pay attention to detail: After ten minutes I realized this is a different guy than in the 83 minute Mario Odyssey breakdown.

I assumed it was always the same guy. How many crazy people do they have on staff? I didn't think two of these people could exist.

I'm gonna go lay down for a while...

The core staff is Andre and Derrick. They're the Mario and Luigi of GX, if you would. Andre did the Odyssey analysis; Derrick did Splatoon 2.

GX's Yoshi is Ash Paulsen. Everyone loves Ash! He posts on GAF as MaverickHunterAsh. He generally doesn't do analyses, though.

But yeah, I love the crazy attention to detail. I think their best work is still their Mario Kart 8 coverage, which pieced together every single track that appeared in the trailers.

I also like how their analyses allow you to soak in detail that kind of flies by when watching a trailer. So much pretty art in Splatoon.

The one thing I find surprising that he "missed" is the fact that he refers to the logo on Marie's hut as her assumed family crest, which...may not be wrong per se, but it's literally the Cuttlegear logo that was used for the brand of the hero replica gear that you unlocked in the first game (by clearing the campaign, and later the Armor replicas from leveling up).

The new P90-styled splattershot seems interesting...the fire rate definitely seemed a bit low for being a splattershot, but that's something that I believe could be upgraded in the original campaign. Maybe you'll be able to do the same with all the Hero weaponry here in some form or another? Either way you can tell that it seems they're going with a more generally-militaristic style with much of the hero stuff anyway.

amazing

I love the solar panels in lieu of the zap fish

and the drone from sheldon

the attention to detail from Nintendo never ceases to amaze

Splatoon 2's probably going to be the premier shooter campaign this year in a similar position to Titanfall 2 last year.

Thats probably too early to call with Red Dead 2, Destiny 2, Star Wars Battlefront 2, Far Cry 5 due this year along with some potentially unanounced shooters potentially also due to be announced at E3 (Days Gone, Suckerpunch's project, Retro's project)

Splatoon does look good though.

Question for you guys:

If we need to save Callie in Hero Mode... How will the concert performances at Splatfest work, assuming they bring those back? After all, there could be players attending Splatfest who haven't rescued Callie yet. Would they not see her performing in Inkopolis Square?

I wonder if we'll see new characters at E3, in the form of a new pop star or pop duo who'll handle the stage updates and perform at Splatfest.

After all, Marie and Callie seem tied up in Hero Mode now. :-O

Some minor details that are off or just uninformed (Marie's shack has an ol-timey music player, probably to blast her indie solo music.) There's also a very antique telephone on the side.

There are a fair bit of good catches though. Really hope those grind rails make it into MP as they would make this the JSR competitive game we all didn't know we needed.

Yeah, I think you raise a good point about the grind rails. GX goes so far as to speculate if the grind rails have replaced ink rails altogether — including the ink rails previously seen in a multiplayer stage. I suppose it's possible. Grind rails certainly look more fun since you can shoot from them!

Probably a cardboard cutout of Callie that Marie will talk to?

That aspect I'm actually curious about.

Whatever the resolution, Splatoon 2 looked absolutely gorgeous on the Switch screen

I do wish they'd apply AA for my screen capture purposes, tho

I used to love watching all of their videos, but it's gotten boring to me now. I feel exhausted after two minutes.

right there with you. they really stretch the shit out of their videos and know how to turn 5 minutes worth of content into 60. I had to unsubscribe a while back because they would flood the subscription feed constantly. not sure if they've cut back on that or gotten worse.

wait, you can change your user name?

you can do it once a year but it's a gaf gold feature. kind of like how you get to perma-ban a non-gold member of your choosing every year if you haven't been banned in that time frame.

Ah, another GameXplain analysis! Always best to pass the time. Definitely some interesting stuff here. I hadn't realized that one boss is a toaster as well haha. I want this game to go full JSR in story mode! Hnnng.

That makes me wonder too. They'd either have just Marie performing I suppose or some other musical group do it.

I don't know what you're talking about.

Alright this name change is great lol.

There are lots of people that do analysis videos in 5 minutes but they're not anywhere as in-depth or well researched as gamexplain's. I get if it's not your thing but their mario odyssey analysis was riveting. It almost made me miss my bus for school because it was so long.

Haven't watched the splatoon 2 one yet tho, but I might as well start now!

Yep, GameXplain is great. They don't "stretch" to add time, either. Their videos are massive because they have a lot of interesting things to point out.

The Mario Odyssey one is a great example: It's their longest analysis to date, and that's with Andre speaking at a rapid-fire clip the whole time. :)

It did look good on the screen (although 720p being the native resolution of the screen probably helps).

I would love some AA or a resolution bump for docked mode (ideally, both).

That being said, it's quite a nice, overall graphical jump between the first and second games.

Do it! It's a short campaign and the final boss is amaze-balls

Edit: At least in the NA version. EU version's not quite as cool
