Gearbox Artist trashes Dragon’s Crown art style

It's sad because Kotaku has created such a shitstorm that even legitimate discussion is going to create eye rolls and opposition next time.
exactly why I'm starting to get a little ticked off. Is it a good discussion (portrayal of women in games)? Yes. Did that kotaku writer pick the right game? No. Was his analysis good? No.

It's gonna suck when someone with good credentials comes in & has a good piece on such a topic & all the response will be "lol feminists" urgh orz

For what it's worth I think her female TF2 models are much better than any of the female characters in that gallery and are an example of female characters she'd like to see in games. They're of a variety of body shapes, not just perfect sex dolls and along witjh their faces/attire they project a lot of character.

Not even close. Her characters look stiff, her values are all soft and muddy, and she doesn't have even half of Kamitani's sense of color.

Who cares if Kamitani likes to over sexualize his women.Milo Manara also likes to draw sexualized women but he is considered a great artist all over the world.Kamitani's more voluptuous woman figure is one of his styles (and fits with the equally exaggerrated male form) and it's obvious that he has worked a long time in order to develop it.His style is unique and for someone to develop a stong and recognizable style it demands a huge amount of work and practise. You can see that even his standing or sitting figures feel as if they are moving.

This girl's art however seem to be on its first steps...she doesn't have a style of her own,her stuff looks like the work you see from countless other artists in DA.
If her main role was concept art she would probably wouldn't even have worked in a video game company.

It's pretty rich to see someone complaining about "samefaces" when her art portfolio is completely indistinguishable from a billion other art portfolios. Say what you will about Kamitani's art style, but at least he has one.

What really confuses me about this whole dust up is the fact Dragon's Crown is downright conservative compared to past games. Where was all this talk when The Guy Game was released? DoA Beach Volleyball? Why didn't you f**cking support Beyond Good and Evil?

God forbid a game released with an anime art style featured over the top caricatures of men and women...just like anime.

I am drowning in hypocrisy ya' hear?

Ok I am done venting. Sorry if I repeated some points already in this thread.

We're now judging a person on a decision made by someone else in the studio now? :/
It's to be expected in a thread with the title "Gearbox artist" - even if she's an environmental artist and not a character artist, even if she's not responsible for any of the bad examples posted here, or is getting criticised for shit Pitchford's said.

It obviously takes a lot of inspiration from fantasy fiction and history in general. Read the link SmokyDave posted. It may not be a parody, but definitely a homage to the genre of fantasy.

Sorceresses being sexy is nothing new. They are often portrayed as femme fatales, so an alluring figure ties in with that concept. Seriously, google "sorceress" and they're all half-naked girls. It is a well-known trope.
I know all that, I still don't think it's meant to be a parody or a caricature, though. Parodies and caricatures imply criticism and subversion for me, which - I think - is not the intent here.

For some writers it was just a way to prove the world that videogame journalism is more than just writing about trivial things and selling good ratings for money.

I think that was bad wording on my behalf. Perhaps an exaggerated homage then?

I want a game with full on violence and nudity, something that imitates real life.
If I can watch it in movies I want it in my games, does this make me immature?

It is actually, i think the artist clearly said it...
People should realize a lot of Japanese games are pretty sarcastic... Bayonetta people ??
Bayonetta isn't a great example when it comes to this. By just pushing the sexualisation of women in games as hard as you can it doesn't come across as a clever parody it's just exploitative. This is coming from somebody who loved Bayonetta and thought the the Joy climax was hilarious. Using an example of a game developed my males and did nothing but exploit women sexually which understandably put off some women from playing it doesn't do anything to justify sexism in other games.

I also don't think it's fair to say "lol Gearbox!" when she's speaking as an individual not a representative of the company. I don't think it's a stretch to conclude that she's not too impressed by some of the character in BL but given I'm guessing environmental artist jobs at big developers aren't all that common in the industry she probably doesn't want to speak out publicly on these gripes. Whilst the fact her forum post reads like a forum post doesn't help her argument I think her own work is largely representative of the types of design she'd like to see in female characters, it's not an invalid perspective she brings up.

I also don't see how peoples opinion of the quality of her artwork has anything to do with the issues raised.

Artist being a woman should be in the OP, not that it contributes to her argument.
How does her being part of the group that's persecuted not contribute to her argument? How about you just learn to read OPs before you post instead?

Oh wow the shitting on Gearbox recently is so idiotic and childish it isn't even funny anymore.
Instead of defending the art style or anything people here need to point out bad gearbox games?

I also think the artstyle of Dragon's Crown and the Designs are shit, and I can not draw really well. Is my opinion now invalid?
I also judge about food and can't cook that well, also wrong?

The person who said this is not representive for every Gearbox game and every art used by Gearbox.

Of course there are stupid things also in Gearbox games, but taking Borderlands as an example is stupid, this game makes fun about itself and isn't serious in any way. While DC isn't a parody or a joke game.

And people who bring up Aliens and Duke Nukem... lol 2 games out of development hell. Fair play guys, you are brilliant.

Edit: and people also joking about "fucking lol"????? Do you guys read GAF threads?

This is why no one takes Game "Journalism" serious, they take one topic and instead of doing a thought out article on it they run it into the fucking ground.

Hey guys, what's going on?

Seriously though, the Vanillaware designs look atrocious as well. But the comment by the gearbox artist, on an account that's linked to the company, is very unprofessional.

Honestly, enough about this particular game already. I mean, it's wild that this one is getting so much press (and probabably a lot higher sales as a result), where as others games with scantly clad girls are flying under the radar.

Now, the only real outstanding question for this game is : ps3 or vita? I'm edging vita now, but ps3 woudl be better for couch coop...

There was no reason to bring this artist's comments a greater audience, was there? Is there any reason we should particularly care what some low level environmental artist at a wildly uneven first person shooter dev has to say about the subject? What makes it something to start yet another acrimonious debate on Dragon's Crown over? People aren't required to like the art. I think she's off base, but she can say whatever she wants. What purpose did it serve to amplify her voice?

I think American creatives working for large companies need to learn to censor themselves. This social media gobbledygook is simply out of hand. You are representing your multitudinous unique colleagues and you need to keep your opinions to yourself. And, if for some reason you are allowed to have an opinion, please be a little more formal, and respectful, especially of the Japanese -- you wouldn't even have a job without people like Kamitani-san. I was fine until the, "fucking lol," which is a terribly offensive thing to say when discussing art like Dragon's Crown. Why do you need to curse? It's a sign of Western cultural decline.

If it hadn´t been for all this stuff about this game, I would never have realized I want this game..

pretty much

She's basically just... what, doing what we do, posting in a forum and posting her own personal views in the context of a reasonably contained discussion. I'm not really digging her views or whatever but I don't see much point in just dogpiling on her. She's not speaking as representive of Gearbox (although by virtue of being id'd as being a Gearbox artist you could argue I guess that she is, whatever)...

As someone who loved Muramasa's art, that game had some similarly bad designs as well, thinking of two bosses in particular. Sexism debate aside, I guess I just like Kamitami's art when it's less crazy.

I think that was bad wording on my behalf. Perhaps an exaggerated homage then?
I think that's the intent, absolutely.

I guess there aren't allowed to be any games that have tits in them anymore? Period? Even if it turns out to be a small amount or something in the future when we get shit like this started.

Funny how these people aren't bitching about sexualized women in movies, tv shows, books (oh wait 50 shades of grey was a top selling book for months and was.... read by women).

If you aren't part of it's target market don't buy it. Not every game has to be inclusive to everyone. I'm not going to buy madden... they don't have to try and get me to buy the game. Same for A bunch of other games out there. It's not my right to have everything appeal to me.

Haters going to hate. Also, gaming is a male dominated hobby and a throwback side scrolling beat'em'up isn't the crossover hit that's going to have women flocking to their PS3s. Dragon's Crown being full of cheesecake is a non-issue.
