Gears 5’s abysmal Steam debut could tell us something about the potential audience for Xbox exclusives on Steam

In other words.

I am shocked.
I’ll bet you 5.00 that Borderlands 3 falls under Gears 5 steam sales next week.

So it must be a failure also.

Or competition is doing its thing,

Only one of those facts can be true.

Why buy it on steam when you can play it with 1$ for 1 month of gamepass? I have no proof but i would bet that numbers on gamepass are gonna be higher than 10k on steam.
It was a hard decision though. That fucking windows store, my gf and I almost rather got the steam version just to not have to deal with the inevitable bs windows store is going to throw at you. She had to download gears 5 twice because between restarts it forgot she was busy installing it. Last night we each had to wait 30 min to download a 300 mb update cause it was downloading in kb/s on a 100Mbps line.

Then I figured out gears 5 just ctds to desktop on launch if you have a mild gpu overclock. Luckily I figured that out, if it was n file corruption you are fucked, re download the whole game.

If you were someone who mostly built up a Steam friends list over the past sixteen years, how would the Gamepass version of this work? Does it integrate with Steam friends list, or just with Xbox Live? Might also be the simple fact that the list of co-op and competitive games already available on Steam is massive, meaning this game won't find a huge audience on there.

How massive can it be? We have millions and millions playing on Xbox Live and 10,000on Steam.

Where is the massive number you speak of?

Recent Steam stats show that even with “massive numbers” the best games get kind of small numbers.

Yet they will have communities Gears won’t?

Have you been eating Peyote?

I think it's because Gears has been a franchise no one but die-hards have cared about since 3 was such a poor trilogy closer. The MCC hitting Steam will sell like gangbusters.

"Massive number" is referring to the volume of games, not a claim that many of them are drawing in tons of players. But even short of drawing in large numbers of players, there are games right now pulling in more players than Gears on Steam that don't exist on Xbox - CSGO, TF2, and Arma 3 are in the top ten as I type this. Throw in a few hundred more games that don't need thousands of concurrent players to provide a decent co-op experience, and you have a much more crowded market. This isn't really anything new, the player numbers for GTA V and R6 Siege have always been a bigger deal on console than on Steam, you can bet the same is occuring with Gears. Steam simply has a crazy number of games that could be absorbing players who might otherwise be interested in a game like Gears.

Maybe, or maybe Gears has A. passed its zenith as a franchise and B. built an audience on Xbox for a decade and a half, so the folks looking to buy the next entry tend to have XBoxes rather than PCs. Let's give the MS on Steam initiative another couple of games before we declare the audience "not there."

Note: I'm not denying the possibility, just saying it's too early to call right now. I want to see how the MCC does.

As a correction. You can play Counterstrike and Team Fortress 2 on Xbox.

So I can make a topic that says Counterstrike or Team Fortess 2 on consoles player numbers show that those 2 games suck.

Right?

You can do whatever you want, you're clearly not comprehending anything that is being said.

Explain it to me like I’m 5 then.

Show me what I’m missing.

Don’t get mad when I ask questions like a 5 year old though.

Argument just isn't a 1 to 1 comparison, is how I'm seeing it. I don't consider a comparison with Team Fortress 2/Counter-Strike GO's console performances to be very compelling.

Of course you wouldn’t.

Console pheasants should be grateful, pc master race doesn’t care.

That's really not what I meant. A better example would be when Witcher 3 was multi-platform after being such a PC-centric franchise (yeah they re-released 2 for consoles a year later very similar to when we got a hold of Gears 4). It's a bit weirder to compare it to a game like say CS GO where even critics noted it's a lesser version of the game and not at the competitive level the PC version is. I don't know the argument for Team Fortress 2, it came in the Orange Box and that certainly sold on the past gen of consoles, no clue on how popular it was to play specifically the Team Fortress 2 aspect of it and would like to see links to anything saying it was poor.

Never played a single GoW game so I'm not going to jump straight into #5 without previous story and context, especially not at full price when its perceived value was slashed by having included in the cheap ass gamepass.
Just watch some video of roided guys shooting guns, some video where people say fuck you repeadetly or a burp contest and a couple of episodes from a cheap military sci-fi series on tv and you basically have the plot for the entire saga more or less

Gears is not story heavy or with an arzigulate plot like kingdom hearts, you can watch a simple 5-10 min recap on yt for a full grasp of the plot.

But why? I was primarily 360 last gen and didn't bother with Xbox this gen (PS4/Switch/PC), but I'm happy as fuck I can play Xbox games on my PC now. I bought Gears 4 at full price and am playing 5 on Gamepass. I don't really give a fuck if I'm paying Microsoft or Valve or Epic, if I can play a game on the best platform, I want to play it there.

I want games like Halo and Gears on PC and I'm happy with that, what does it have to do with going from 360 to PS4? PS4 was a better value prop and XBone didn't really give me a reason to buy one. That doesn't mean I'm going to have to pick sides or some shit when it comes to playing the franchies I loved back in the 360 days

Game pass isn’t on Linux sadly.

Gears 5 is on Steam? How bout that.

I have no context on the 'new generation' of gears they introduced with Marcus' kid in 4. Even if they'd done a solid job of making the Steam userbase aware of the game's existence, why would I buy in on a sequel that doesn't focus on the characters I care about anymore?

Gears is dead on pc? You do realize there's cross play right? I have no trouble finding games so that's a blatant lie.

Unless steam version is locked away from the Xbox /windows version which would be pretty shitty.

I bought Gears 5 on Steam. I'm no fan of Steam at all, but I hate the Microsoft store with passion and I also dislike their implementation of a 'Netflix for videogames' and I think it would be very dangerous if it becomes a big success. I simply don't want to support that with my money, and I'm glad that there is Steam as alternative, even if it's Steam.

I don't feel great about it, though. The price difference is simply too vast. In addition, it's not as if a Steam purchase would circumvent their Xbox Live stuff, as you still need to use your Xbox account and log to Xbox (using a broken UI login that looks minuscule in 4K, by the way) in order to start the game.

It's not about the price. Anything Microsoft service related in Windows, especially Windows Store is not guaranteed to work and failure rate is very high, often forcing a windows reset. Plus you are forced to upgrade w10 to latest revision every few months for it to work.such updates are risky as they can break Windows.
I don't want to go through that ordeal even if they had Nintendo and PS4 exclusives
Failure rate is not “high”. Stop grabbing stuff out of your ass.

It’s way higher than it should be. I’ve had a real bad experience with Windows store bullshittery. Not once has steam given me problems with the exception of when Half Life 2 released...15 years ago

Welp. If you’re a PC gamer and choose to go Linux only I’d just say you chose wrong

Alexios

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
It’s just a game good enough for game pass to kill time, Full price? No way.
Basically. How else would it be possible some small time indie game like Risk of Rain 2 (to mention something recent in the shooter genre) with none of the Gears IP power and media presence and critical darling status (in some circles) to have 7x the amount of peak concurrent players?

Well that is if you believe Gears 5 was over-hyped. People have been shitting on it for the last several months. The "we haven't been shown the campaign yet so it must be bad" argument...🤮. Then the game released to high reviews. That's the opposite of over-hyped and more like The Coalition delivered the goods.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
No it's free on the torrents sites, you have to pay the monthly fee on game pass and hope it stays there for a long long time if you consider the service an alternative to ownership. Why do I say that it may go, well this is how services like that work, they rotate the content.

Any way you get three months of game pass for free with a lot of videocards these days, so people can give it a try...

Microsofts exclusives never leaves Game Pass.

here's Greedfall's stats for yesterday: Peak concurrent players yesterday: 11,485
Remnant: From the Ashes (an August release): Peak concurrent players yesterday: 11,474

I think it's kinda hard to deny it's not performing amazingly well on Steam, it's really hard to ignore the game pass aspect of it.

Even Microsoft admit it. You are forced to do a whole OS upgrade,as opposed to Steam. Not ignoring the other Store issues too. They think PC OS updates are as simple as console OS updates

On May 21, the Windows 10 May 2019 Update started to become available for users on an actively serviced version of Windows 10 who seek to update via “check for updates” (limited to devices with no known compatibility issues).  If you received a message saying your device is not compatible, please check back frequently! We are actively working with OEMs and device manufacturers to address any incompatibilities with updated firmware and drivers.

We’re so glad you’re excited about Xbox Game Pass. We are slowly throttling up the availability of the May 2019 update to ensure all devices have the best possible update experience, and for this reason some customers may not be offered the update at this time. As our rollout progresses, we continuously collect update experience data and retrain our models to learn which devices will have a positive update experience, and where we may need to wait until we have higher confidence in a great experience.

We are constantly monitoring and working to improve Windows 10 quality, including how the rollout is going. Please check the Windows release health dashboard to see current/resolved issues and safeguard holds on devices. We hope you enjoy this new update and encourage you to tell us about your experience by providing comments or suggestions via Feedback Hub.

Not even sure why this is being questioned, I’ve got this on pc game pass, like every other sensible pc gamer with a steam library full of unplayed games :)

In all honesty, even in the most hardcore pirating communities, people that, on some deranged principle, refuse to pay for any game are saying that people should just buy Gamepass for 1 dollar to skip the cracking hassle and play Gears 5.

This to say that Gears 5 as a case study for this notion is most like a bad choice.

I don't think any PC gamer who has missed the core of the series would pay full price on the fifth one. That's what the $1 Gamepass is for.

I think its also cultural. FPS are bigger than TPS, and Halo is one of the best examples, a huge AF lore that its keep being discussed (even if Gears have it too), the original game on PC was actually the first one to have Online Multiplayer, and lots of people insisted to have the franchise as a whole on PC (all Microsoft did was to port Halo 2 for Vista with no improvements), so MCC will bring all but Halo 5 games to the platform.

Gamepass is not available everywhere. My only option is to buy Gears 5 for 70€, which is not happening.
I borrowed a 360 and I'm playing 2, 3 and Judgment instead.

PC gamers don't pay full price for games like console plebes... They wait for a Steam holiday sale to get the GOTY version for 50% off

For a game that's not getting a lot of traction in terms of user engagement it's still selling quite well by the looks of it. Been in the top 3 Global Top Sellers since release (currently #2). With 2.8k user reviews I'm guessing 140k'ish copies sold.

This has nothing to do with the Steam audience, it's about Gears of War 5 being a average game, no promotion from Microsoft on Steam, 70 Euros price, SJW BS. The game isn't nothing special. And the GoW community plays Xbox.

Naww did the awesome graphics hurt your graphics card?

The game kicks ass as everyone says and looks amazing. Its all about the fact its not designed for “wankers” (not ment as an insult but as a factual reflection on the popularity of soft porn games on steam).

Personally I say wait until the halo trilogy, that will be a much better indication of how well xbox games will do on steam.
