General Tower Defense Strategies

So, I've never been great at these games, but recently decided to try out kingdom rush. I'm getting pooped on in the fourth level where the roads split and I have to manage two lanes.

Tower defense has never been something I truly grasped, so I wanted to know if there were any globally applicable strats available regarding tower placement, spell casting, etc.

I guess it depends on the game but generally, saving money early and getting upgraded towers>>more towers

From my td days back in Warcraft 3 I think the vast majority of strats were a combination of slowing towers and mazing. The guys that were really good at it could have the enemies follow a maze forever.

Focus area-of-effect attacks on bottlenecks and corners. If you have towers that attack in a straight line, place them either side of a straight corridor. If there are towers that offer stat boosts to other towers, place them in a center of a cluster of other towers.

In case of Kingdom rush; create chokepoints using barracks and put your strongest towers near those. That's probably the most general strategy.

for that level I dont know if you noticed but certain enemies go one way and some the other look up their weaknesses and put the corresponding towers on that side

The only general TD strategy I would offer is: don't keep trying the same thing over and over if you fail. You need to be able to mix up your plan.

Also be ready for the flying motherfuckers, that also applies in most cases.

Yep.

Also build up the bottlenecks first... on the map you showed (and many TD maps) it's actually right before the goal. Once you strengthen that work on other areas. Probably the very top where they come in... since that's also a 2 for 1.

as someone who wasted far too much of their life on TDs in Starcraft (oh god Tarpit 3.3... oh god.), it's all about bottlenecks + upgrades.

That level is doable with three towers. Artillery at the split (where you have the barracks) and two barracks where you currently have a mage and artillery. Send one group of soldiers as far left as possible and the other just to the right of the arty. Use the soldiers to buy time while the arty smokes everything. Upgraded towers are stronger than using more towers. Also use the reinforcement spell as much as possible to help the soldiers.

That strategy only really works if you have a bunch of upgrades to your reinforcements, though. But it's still valid if you don't. You'll need a mage and a barracks at the exit to deal with any leakage.
