The Geoff Keighley hype cycle again?

1) He teases an epic-hiper-mega-fantastico reveal that "no one will see it coming".
2) GAF tries to guess which game it is.
3) Reveal.
4) Everyone is disappointed and promises never to pay attention to Geoff Keighley ever again.
5) Return to 1.

Did anyone correctly predict The Last of Us?

fuck off geoff.

i love how people still call this guy a real journalist.

Who calls him a journalist anymore? He gets exclusives because he reaches a large audience not because he is doing deep research. No reason to hate on the guy though. That is how the video game industry works. I find him to be quite respectable.

People say it always turns out to be nothing or disappointing. But his last reveats were a new game from the guys behind Uncharted and Sony Smash Bros with gameplay. Those seem like pretty big deals. Even if the second one was rumored earlier, it was a full reveal with gameplay.

It seems like people are caught up with not liking these typical teases and want to say it also typically end up being nothing. However with GT that hasn't been the case, yet.

That and his Final hours of... apps are excellent.

i've seen it on these boards.

it's defeatist to think this is the only way it can work - and calling someone who has willingly become a PR mouthpiece for publishers respectable is something i don't at all understand.

I'm guessing it's Respawn's game.
doub it. they said they'll be no show at this years E3. you think EA would let this be announced on GTTV or Game Informer and not on the most important gaming conference? besides, I don't think their game is at stage when they'll ready to show something.
take your time Respawn, make something awesome.

Yeah, he's fine by me.

And I don't think this sort of thing is as terrible as some make it seem. Fun to make or guess or two, and then you move on. It's like the Game Informer cover teases each month. Some people seem to really dislike those as well, but you also have pages and pages of people trying to guess and speculate on what it could be. Seems harmless in the grand scheme of things.

What are you expecting? Hard hitting game journalism? "Duke Nukem Forever looks like shit, what do you have to say for yourself." Oh yeah and I would love an exclusive on Borderlands 2 and that Aliens game you are working on. Sorry but game journalism is like covering the next iteration of the IPAD. Unless you go all 007 on it, there is no info to be had outside of that provided to you.

There's also the fact he is still a legitimate journalist. What's the Final Hours if not a series of investigative journalism? It ain't a series of fan letters.

Geoff is mostly a showbiz guy now sure, but he put his work in with the best of them.

Which is why I have respect for him and do not see him as one of the bad guys. But now he is stuck as a presenter these days. We do not hear a lot of opinions nor reporting. He gets big inteviews though, and that is the game.

Yeah, I was mostly trying to add on to what you said. The hate for GK is a little less than warranted (if warranted at all, which I personally doubt.)

Speculation is fun. If you don't feel that way: then don't. Wait until you have the facts. If you're like that, I can see why this would annoy you.

But if you know you're like that, why waste time coming into the thread with:

"All marketing!"
"Geoff never delivers"
"Blah, blah, blah."?

We are of course in a place of free speech, but that's what I find pointless, personally. Not the the threads, but the downers.

Anyway, I'm doubtful this'll be big. All the major stuff will be on someone's stage.

Valve Space Game.
Thank you.

edit: all you guys saying "fuck off geoff" - why do you bother entering and posting then, if you wish to ignore it? So dumb.

I really don't understand why we do this.

100 games are going to be announced at E3. We won't be expecting lots of them. Why on earth does this particular one matter until it's announced? It could be literally anything. Jet Set Willy 3: Space Marine Edition.

He might as well be tweeting "THE SUN WILL RISE TOMORROW" and we can make 300 posts guessing what time it might rise. Games will be announced. This is inevitable. Games that he hasn't tweeted about. Games that he has. His tweet makes no difference to anything at all and nor does trying to work out what it means. If someone guesses it he's not going to pop in and say "hey, you were right!" We're still going to have to wait until E3. The whole thing is pointless.

All that tweet is for is to get Geoff's name out there and I'm sure he's sitting there laughing at us, all the suckers falling perfectly into his little trap.

Piss off Geoff, I am never getting into his hype cycles again after The Last of Us.

sorry, but as cool as a new IP from ND is, it was not worth all of THAT hype leading up to it.
