Geoff Keighley: Top Secret Game no one will see coming.

Sorry if you weren't excited by a brand new IP from naughty dog, but most people were. Battle Royale was an announcement we all knew was coming so it wasn't much of a surprise

I'm not saying I'm not in anyway excited by The Last of Us, I'm sure it'll be great, I have faith in ND and I LOVE the Uncharted series.

I just can't see how it warranted the hype it did beforehand and I'm amazed more people weren't disappointed given the theories and speculation going around beforehand, plus the fact we still haven't seen any gameplay.

I honestly still can't get over that whole crap about "you won't believe your eyes." "This is one of the industry's biggest secrets, can't imagine how this wasn't leaked." "You won't believe it." That sort of stuff promised HUGE megatons that just never came.

Okay so we just suggest everything and eventually we will get it. Geoff is still pretty cool though, so don't go too hard on him when we guess that iiiitt''sss....

Gunstar Heroes vs ToeJam and Earl
Crash Bandi-reboot
Sims 4 Wii U exclusive
Jet Set Radio Move/Kinect/WiiU

Or maybe it's just Metal Gear Solid 5. I mean, it's not exactly unpredictable, but we won't "see it coming" because it'll be hiding under a box... and the box has face camo... and Jack Tretton will be all liek "Woah, hey, Kojima-san! I didn't see you creep up behind me on the stage like in that script I've been rehearsing for 2 weeks."

Yes, indeed there will be secret games revealed for the first time at E3, Geoff. Stating the obvious here. Why would anyone expect otherwise? It's E3.

A game you will never believe and all that crap? Yeah cos it's so hard to fathom Sony first party putting out a zombie survival game -_-

His hyperbole and typical way of speaking is the worst part, it's obnoxious and he feels like some marketing tool at the best. Anytime I see content on GT that involves him, I gotta smh at some point. ,,But stay tuned!! Because next time we will bring you the MATURE EXPERIENCE you've been waiting for in a brand new AAA FPS TITLE by a favorite COREGAMING STUDIO!! Isn't that cool, kids?!?!''
Me: shut up Geoff, you're an embarrassment to my hobby.

Man, some people are really never satisfied. The Last of Us reveal delivered and so did Playstation All Stars. What games were hyped up by Keighley and turned out to be crap?

This is part of E3. If you don't care about the usual preview hyping then I would stop visiting threads that aren't OT or review threads.

All he said nobody will see it coming. And he is probably right.
Gameinformer said the same thing with the Southpark RPG.
That thread had over 400 replies and nobody guessed it.
(I don't count "a new RPG by Oblivion" as a successful hit. That's like guessing that a new shooter is being done by Bungie.)

No seeing it coming doesn't mean you need to pre-order this game as soon as it is available and it will be good. It just means you will be surprised.

You're shitting me right? That game was known months before it got 'announced'.

The Last of Us? Sorry, but I REALLY didn't think The Last of Us was worth all the hype put behind it and I still think it'll be a good game, but come on seriously? A game you will never believe and all that crap? Yeah cos it's so hard to fathom Sony first party putting out a zombie survival game -_-

He was hyping it because of the studio behind it. ND is one of the biggest studios in gaming right now and they'd just released a game a month before. No one was even speculating that the game was going to be from them.

So what? we didn't even have footage of what it was like. No one knew for certainty that it would look like a Smash clone or if it was going to be more like MvC, etc.

In fact, pop in the thread and you'll see everyone surprised at how it looked. A lot of people may have guessed it would look like a smash clone but no one had an idea on how the stages/characters/attacks/items where going to look like. Just because the game was rumored for months doesn't take away that it's a surprising game.

Revealing a new game from Naughty Dog is a pretty big deal yes. It isn't however, "ZOMG you won't believe this new game, it's all sorts of incredible and you're eyes won't even believe what they're seeing!!"

*cue trailer of an in-game cutscene* -_-

Everyone whose seen gameplay said it looks much more intuitive, deeper and well rounded than their UC games.I have utmost confidence in Naughty Dog.

That's actually really good to hear, but I'd like to actually see it aswell. E3 is going to be a long wait =/

By your definition, I'm not sure what game would warrant the hype that Keighley gave. Gears of War 4? Halo 5? GTA6? FF14?

pretty much yes, by what he was doing I was expecting nothing short of Half Life 3 or a new GTA or something else that would be seen as massive. I remember people were even speculating company crossovers of games cos of how much he had hyped this into something that was apparently "unbelievable".

Yeah, I got over the whole Geoff Keighley hype train crap after The Last of Us.

If you kept your expectations reasonable Last of Us was not a disappointing reveal.

I'm not even that big of a fan of Naughty Dog and thought it was a good reveal.

US$1million says it's Zelda.

So, earlier you dismissed a new IP from one of the top devs in the industry by saying "Yeah cos it's so hard to fathom Sony first party putting out a zombie survival game", but the hype would've been justified by a company announcing another sequel?

:| so basically you want a known IP with the same gameplay we've seen 2+ times (depending on the franchise). I see.

You can lambast that all you want but this is the games industry here and nothing but that sort of thing justifies that kind of hype like established blockbuster IP.

Yes, we all know established IP carry far more weight in this industry than actual studio cred does unfortunately.

Keighley said it's something we wouldn't be able to guess and no one will see coming. I'm pretty sure GTA5 and franchises like that are easily believable and easily guessed. In fact, some people in this thread have already mentioned typical franchises that are obviously going to get released one day, not sure how they think that's something "no one will see coming"

If he filmed it for his show instead of it being a reveal for one of the press conferences means its probably a third party game and probably nothing to be excited about

What the hell is the point of announcing something like this for anything other than personal attention?

"There's a top secret game in development" - There are probably loads of top secret games in development that we're already all speculating about without somebody having to tell us "there's a top secret game in development".

This announcement makes no difference whatsoever. There will probably be 5 or 10 games announced in the next couple of months that fit this description and we won't ever know any better. I hate this crap from "journalists".

His job is to get people to tune into the show. The one with his name on it. Seems like he's pretty good at it, at least if GAF is any indication. He does plenty of journalist work, but he's going to juggle his hats.

And really why does it bother you so much? You can just ignore him, some people enjoy his teases, I generally find them to be worthwhile and it's fun speculating anyway.

Why are you say "unfortunately" when you're supporting that line of thinking?

To get people hyped for GTTV's E3 special. And it seems like it's working since this thread is only a few hours old and it's already 4 pages long.

I'm aware that I can just ignore him in the same way that I can just ignore anything. But if I ignored everything, I wouldn't have anything to opine on. I don't understand this argument at all.

It bothers me, and I'm explaining why. I don't tell you to stop being excited about his silly little announcements, so please don't tell me to ignore him. I didn't realise this thread was a "no contrary opinions" zone.

Getting attention is the point. They want people to tune in to see the secret revealed.

Well, yeah, I get it. I'm just explaining that I don't like it. My question was a rhetorical device to get my point across. My point being that games journalism is essentially an extension of games industry PR and it's absolutely pathetic.

To generate hype for the show/channel he works with so it can get attention?

And as evidenced by this thread (or any GAF thread with Geoff hype) he tends to do a good job.

Again, thanks so much for literally answering my question!

I don't support that line of thinking at all, but it would come closer to justifying keighley's hype than what he ultimately delivered.

I don't see how you aren't supporting it. He delivered a new IP from a studio that's generally considered to be one of the best in gaming. You aren't going to get much better than that as far as new IP's go. But you agreed that sequels would've justified the hype. I'm not sure how they would considering that everyone knows that there's going to be another Half Life, HALO, GTA etc. It's only a matter of when those companies choose to announce them. No one knew that ND was working on a new IP. You even had some people fearing that they were going to be "stuck" only working on Uncharted sequels.
