Germany: Merkel disgust at New Year gang assaults

To be fair, it works the other way too with people making up stories about refugees doing crime that turned out to be false.

Both are terrible and only hurt the discussion.

Anecdotal news—positive and negative—are always of relatively little value. I wonder if the German government is conducting studies about the experiences of the various refugee centers in the country to get a clearer picture of general situation, including statistical data on refugee requirements, expectations, beliefs, and attitudes.

I agree, but these things are not easy to properly assess and analyze. There is a reason why I didn't post the recent analysis for Braunschweig.

regarding the 13 year old girl that got raped by asylum seekers:
Lisa-verbrachte-die-Nacht-beim-Freund (german)

Police tracked her phone and she spend the night with her 19 y/o boyfriend.
She was hiding from her parents because they should have gone to a conference with her teacher because of the bad grades.

Her boyfriend already confessed the story. No rape or any other kind of sexual interaction happened.

Huh. I've seen people refer to this girl as the prime example of who we shouldn't be allowing any more migrants into this country. They can't keep their hands off young girls...it's engrained in their culture, etc.

Migrant crisis: Grenade thrown at asylum hostel in Germany [BBC]

Unidentified attackers threw a live hand grenade at a migrant hostel in south-western Germany, officials say.

The grenade was found during the night near buildings housing 170 people in the town of Villingen-Schwenningen. Its pin had been pulled out but the explosives failed to detonate.

Justice Minister Heiko Maas said it was a new level of "hate and violence".

There were 1,005 attacks on refugee homes in Germany last year - five times more than in 2014.

Some of the migrants at the Villingen-Schwenningen hostel were evacuated while bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion.

Police spokesman Thomas Kalmbach said it was "just luck" no-one was hurt.

Officers said the grenade still contained its explosives but it was not clear whether it still had a detonator.

Mr Maas said he was summoning his regional state counterparts to crack down on hate crime.

"Grenades are already flying towards refugee homes. We can't wait until there is someone dead," he said.

edit: sorry there's another thread. Missed it http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1177121

Just now some 200 (unconfirmed) masked swedish nationalists went berserk at Plattan(t-centralen?) in central Stockholm. Several migrants appear to have been beaten. Afterwards they handed out flyers saying that they were the "swedish resistance", that the "police have clearly shown that they don't possess the means to stop them(criminal migrants, known to hang out at plattan)" and that they "don't see any other way than to dish out the punishment they (the migrants) deserve."

Rumors has it that it's the cities three major football supporter clubs that have organized this attack. I hope this is true, because if it's "ordinary" citizens we're in for a world of trouble.

I've never heard of anything like this in Sweden ever before. Things are going downhill real fast.

Link to the alleged flyer. In swedish

Good lord.

I've seen a lot of posters in this thread say how migrants and their culture have no place in Europe but as an outsider looking in there's plenty of "ugly" on the other side too.

Edit:

pardon my outrage but is this an example of Swedish culture?

Edit 2:

*sigh* Sorry, this thread has got me twisted. I hope this isn't the mood across the whole country, that groups need to be forming to attack refugees to "punish" them for the actions of others

Is there also an explanation for why they believe it's not related to the migrant crisis? The article doesn't seem to address that at all.

I strongly suspect that the statements from the EC are primarily political and not necessarily factual, just like they were when the Greek crisis escalated last year. They want the EU to work together and distribute refugees across all EU states (which is the only sensible way going forward). And for that they need to counter the argument made by some individual states that accepting refugees will lead to events like those in cologne.

Teenage girl 'made up' migrant rape claim that outraged Germany

A 13-year-old Russian-German girl has admitted making up a story about being kidnapped and raped by migrants in a case that triggered a furore in Germany and briefly embroiled Berlin police in a spat with the Kremlin, state prosecutors said.

The parents of the teenager, named only as Lisa, reported her missing on 11 January after she failed to appear at school in the Marzahn district of the capital. She reappeared 30 hours later with injuries on her face, and told her parents she had been attacked by men of Middle Eastern or north African appearance. News of the incident spread on social media, sparking outrage among Berlin’s Russian-German community.

But when she was questioned by trained specialists three days later “she immediately admitted that the story of the rape was not true”, said the spokesman for the state prosecutor, Martin Steltner.

He said the teenager had been scared of going home after the school had contacted her parents over unnamed problems.

Yet the allegations caused uproar in Berlin, particularly after reports of mass sexual assaults allegedly carried out by migrants in Cologne. A Russian-German community group staged a protest, supported by the Pegida-related Bärgida movement. The far-right National Democratic party also demonstrated in Marzahn.

I hope she gets punished accordingly. Not only do I find false rape allegations one of the most deplorable false allegations, she also added fuel to a fire.

Russian "journalists" need to be punished and deported. I have no idea how bullshit peddlers like those from RT can retain their licences in Europe.

Meanwhile 10,000 refugee children are missing, says Europol | World news | The Guardian

At least 10,000 unaccompanied child refugees have disappeared after arriving in Europe, according to the EU’s criminal intelligence agency. Many are feared to have fallen into the hands of organised trafficking syndicates.

(...)

Donald confirmed Europol had received evidence some unaccompanied child refugees in Europe had been sexually exploited. In Germany and Hungary, the former a popular destination country for refugees and migrants, with the latter an important transit state, large numbers of criminals had been caught exploiting migrants, he said. “An entire [criminal] infrastructure has developed over the past 18 months around exploiting the migrant flow. There are prisons in Germany and Hungary where the vast majority of people arrested and placed there are in relation to criminal activity surrounding the migrant crisis,” said Donald.

The police agency has also documented a disturbing crossover between organised gangs helping to smuggle refugees into the EU and human-trafficking gangs exploiting them for sex work and slavery. He said that longstanding criminal gangs known to be involved in human trafficking, whose identity had been logged in the agency’s Phoenix database, were now being caught exploiting refugees.

This probably deserves an own thread.

True, but she did specifically say her attackers were of Middle Eastern or North African appearance, so she definitely intentionally stoked the racist fires.

Horrific. Makes me sick thinking about it. Also literally just finished watching Taken a few minutes ago, and seeing some of the scenes in that just makes the thought of this even worse. Poor poor children.

Last Thursday a worried grandfather voiced his concerns about the increasing incidents of sexual harassment of young girls on their way to school by migrants in a meeting in the German town of Bad Schlema. His own granddaughter has been victim of sexual harassment and he fears it will be much worse when girls will wear less clothing in the summer or dress for physical education. The mayor's reply angered the over 100 citizens who were present: "It's simple, don't provoke them and don't walk in these areas."

The video is absolutely disgusting. This Major would've been tar and feathered at any other time in history. A true testament to the self control that modern Germans have.

Sounds a lot like turning back the boats.

As horrible as it is to say this, Europe's current immigration crisis makes me feel almost relieved my government has a totally draconian immigration policy.

That's the worst thing about all this. It's making the right wing palatable.

She's 13 and was apparently being groomed by 19 year olds.

That this is being downplayed by authorities and media highlights what an open brothel Germany is.

How can anybody say those things and think it is OK. "You should not walk there." "There are alternatives routes to school." Of course people get angry when talked to like that.

She's 13 and was apparently being groomed by 19 year olds.

That this is being downplayed by authorities and media highlights what an open brothel Germany is. On any other day in a sane country this would be a front page story.
Something fishy was definitely going on, but unrelated to the migrant situation. I mean, a 13-year old staying at a 19-year old friends house. What is he doing hanging out with a kid. She had sex with multiple people, which is rape since she is below the age of consent. Does remind me of those stories about young girls getting involved with "loverboys" and groomed for prostitution. Hope she recovers and gets to live a normal life.

Remember when last year, around the times Merkel announced open boarders, the Finnish PM wouldn't be outdone and he put out a big announcement of offering to give his home to asylum seekers?

If not, let Al Jazeera remind us:

http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2015/09/finnish-pm-offers-home-asylum-seekers-150905110149687.html

This article was widely shared in the Facebook groups facilitating the immigration movement as an example of why people should move to Finland. Even the prime minister gives away his home, for free!

Well, to the surprise of no-one, he has cancelled plans to give his home to asylym seekers because of 'reasons'. Reason being that his private decision got too much publicity, and because of that it would be irresponsible to put asylum seekers at risk in his home where their security can't be guaranteed. Thanks Al Jazeera for ruining it for everyone!

Long live the dream.

It should be noted that this mayor belongs to the Freie Wähler (Free Voters) party. That partly explains why he acts like an amateur here. The AfD recruited a lot of its members from the Freie Wähler.

Bad Schlema seems to be quite a curious place politically. The last mayor election happened in 2011, and the only candidates were Jens Müller (Freie Wähler) and Stefan Hartung (NPD). So voters had the choice between someone who doesn't belong to a registered political party and a Neo-Nazi.

Pretty weird if you ask me.

I'm sorry, what? The topic of Russian propaganda push again Germany is currently broadly discussed in our media. And looking at Ukraine, Syria and the lies about this girl (+ a recent hacker attack against the parliment) shows that you're ought to stay vigilant with them.

On topic: recent public opinion polls in Germany show that...

- 94% are in favor of accepting refugees who flee from (civil) wars. Even 76% of AfD supporters are in favor

- 73% in favor of accepting refugees who flee from political or religious persecution (50% for AfD supporters)

- 25% in favor of accepting economic refugees (5% for AfD supporters)

However,

- 81% don't think the government is in control of the situation

- 88% are in favor of cutting benefits to refugees who don't to integrate into society

- 78% in favor of proclaiming Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia save states (for refugees to be sent back to)

- 77% in favor of offices at the border to send refugees without asylum claim right back

- 63% favor a capacity ceiling as far as accepting refugees goes (33% against)

- A 53% for, 42% against split for border controls between EU states

- A 44% for, 49% against split for suspension of refugees' family reunification

Anyone seen this Channel 4 News video? Tonnes of false videos, edits, stories etc going viral, being used as anti immigration fodder to negatively affect public opinion based on distorted grounds and lies.

Channel 4 | Migrant videos proved false

That's why it's really important to keep a cool head until we have more reliable data from refugee centers and researchers; if we ever get some... The fact that the current national discourses are almost exclusively based on anecdotal evidence and individual stories really poisons and dumbs down everything. Everybody finds plenty of stuff to cherry-pick from, and many of the arguments from all sides sound more like ideological doctrine than like sober analysis.

Guess I will make a thread after all if no one else does since I hadn't seen the reaction of the mother before, who had previously always taught her children to respect refugees as she herself was one from Serbia, but has since regretted it. I feel like there's a good discussion to be had there and the shifting views of previously tolerant people, though the thread may be locked for being too depressing as many have been recently.

This comes off as you trying to exploit the emotionally devastated mother and her child's horrific experience in an attempt to shift the opinion of tolerant people against refugees.

What's there to discuss? The rapist was apprehended.

If you say so.

I think there should be some kind of refugee crisis OT like how there's an ISIS OT. A place to post the atrocities committed on both sides.

I mean, this thread is about a month-old event.

This comes off as you trying to exploit the emotionally devastated mother and her child's horrific experience in an attempt to shift the opinion of tolerant people, regarding refugees.

What's there to discuss? The rapist was apprehended.

It's more I think people should not be swayed over to the side of intolerance because of a few bozos that commit these acts, but acknowledge that it is happening for people personally affected by isolated events like a mother whose teaching of tolerance left her son emotionally and physically scarred. It's not a black and white situation and this won't be the last event like this either (on both sides).

Also, the guy was a migrant, not a refugee. He was not fleeing anything.

Edit: Or maybe he was a refugee? Seeing conflicting reports.

I'm considering if it's worthy of its own thread, but for now I'll just post it here. This is the most well-balanced and explanatory article I've seen from an English source on the crisis, specifically how Sweden have handled it.

https://foreignpolicy.com/2016/02/1...-nation-on-earth-sweden-syria-refugee-europe/

The Swedes responded because they could not accept that outcome. They had no special obligation to act; they did so because they believed it was right. They had behaved admirably; even the hypocrisy of political correctness — their opinion corridor — may have been an indispensable adjunct to national self-sacrifice. Then, as a consequence, they were inundated, forcing a step back from the moral precipice. Can we blame them? No more than an individual can be blamed for declining to act heroically.

Yet it need not have ended this way. If their neighbors had pitched in, Sweden could have afforded the price of its remarkable generosity. At the Davos forum in January, Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven, said bluntly, “We are a continent of 500 million people; we could easily handle this task if we cooperated, if we met this as a union and not as individual member states.” But Europe did not cooperate. Already the Schengen rules lie in tatters. The refugee crisis threatens European foundations as even the recent euro crisis did not. “If we cannot handle this as a European union,” Lofven went on to predict, “the European Union in itself is at risk.”

It should be the go-to link for Americans who feel they have a hard time understanding what is happening over here.

Very good piece and addresses the worries a lot of people have and why opinion is switching, which is not just because of incidents like in Cologne, but also economic ones.

Sweden expects to spend about 7 percent of its $100 billion budget next year on refugees. The real number is somewhat higher, since the costs of educating and training those who have already received asylum are not included in that figure. It is, in any case, double the 2015 budget.
7% is a major amount for this, although I can't find how this is calculated. But many countries have seen major cuts to budgets over the last years, lack of economic growth and cuts to things they are used to, so seeing that money go to others is difficult to explain.

The fear is that the recent generations of refugees have become isolated from Swedish life, as has happened with North Africans in the French banlieues, the slums that have become incubators of alienation for many North African immigrants. Gur says that 20 years ago, Sweden had just three residential areas where significant numbers of citizens did not work and did not have access to good schools — the indispensable instrument of social mobility in Sweden’s high-tech economy. That number, he says, has now reached 186.
And this is a major problem, since this crisis will create a larger lower class that can have a major impact for a long time. We have already seen neighborhoods where immigrants and their kids are far removed from the rest of society in some Western European countries. No wonder other countries are not looking forward to that, or adding to those trouble.

I do feel this is somewhat of a simplification. Yes, we are 500 million people. But a lot of those are in countries that either already have a large immigrant population and hesitant to add to that, are countries that we can not expect to give a major contribution, or are countries where people just rather not go when the road is also open to other countries.
