Giant Bomb GOTY 2015 - Metal Gear Meets Its Mario Maker

Love Jeff's position on Bethesda and Fallout

too much money and too much time doing the same thing

I'm just listening to that part now.
He really tore Bethesda a new arse hole lol.

I burst out laughing when he compared Fallout 4 to a defunct car where the government would have to step in due to people dying.

The goddamn hypocrisy of Austin and Brad when defending Fallout 4 is the worst. "You can't armchair designer and say it can be fixed, but we can and say it can't."

This fucking got to me. Austin somewhat has a point with the settlement system in terms of disappointment being subjective if you like the minecraft aspect, but it's not just the building aspect that's hindered in changing it thus.

All of those individual towns you now build up, in FO3 or NV, were pre-constructed, usually with at least some pretense of having care taken in building their story, or at least the environment. Now it's all just 'do-it-yourself', but with shitty radiant quests instead of anything substantial.

Not expecting more out of something like FO4 just because it's a Bethesda game is just....ugh.

Best part of that most disappointing argument was that it went to that Toy Soldiers game little to no objection, something no follower of Giant Bomb predicted because no one even remembered it existed, plus it never seemed like they brought it up that much compared to the more high profile stuff.

As I said, I actually remembered it and I haven't even played it. Also that Dreamcast game comparison from Jeff was so spot on. Hotline 2 got robbed though.

I love Austin, but I disagree so much with him on Fallout 4.

I am so disappointed that Austin championed Fallout 4.

Telling designers to not design encounters because it arbitrarily limits their ambition is just the most nonsensical thing ever. It's like saying New Vegas is shit because it encourages a certain path to get to the titular city, despite the fact that it's only softly gated and you can cut straight through deathclaw-infested lands if you're really ballsy/good.

I'll echo what Jeff said about DOA Xtreme 3: Demand More.

I didn't even know that game came out until there was a QL one day. I don't know who the people are that actually had any form of expectations for it.

Exactly, demand more. Not idea why people settle for this.

I'm only halfway through Day One because I can't listen much right now, but I will say Jeff is bugging me this year. A game comes up for discussion that everyone likes and he just shuts it down by saying "Yeah but it's not so good/special" Until Dawn, Rocket League, RDR, and too a lesser extent because I see his points Undertale(I'm not far either). But then he's in love with a stupid game like guitar hero and ding ding, what Jeff says Wins!

It's beyond clear Bethesda just have to step it up for the next Elder Scrolls.

This level of jank and bugs will not be as blindly accepted by critics and Bethesda fans for another time on consoles especially.

You think? Sales numbers are up on Skyrim. Every game seems to sell better than the last.

Sales, reviews, and the wider community reaction seems far closer to Austin's POV than anything else. I think it's pretty clear they can just slap together Skyrim again, in a new area with slightly higher res assets, a building mechanic and strip out even more of the RPG elements and people will eat that shit up.

They also need to come up with new stuff that isn't just further dumbing down the formula. Otherwise I won't even look at it next time around.

It's weird that even though Fallout 4 got great reviews and sold millions of copies I feel like I'm in the minority on the internet for liking it a lot.

They might as well strip all the character progression out and make it just about weapons and armor, put a minecraft mode in like Fallout has, build in Twitch streaming tools and admit that's the only audience they actually give a shit about.

It's hard to know when the dropoff will appear, it could ding the next title, it might not. They are spaced out enough that one tends to forget the issues they had with the last one.

(I didn't buy F4 and bought Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3 & Skyrim pretty much day one)

There is absolutely no reason for Elder Scrolls or Fallout to get any better.

After all, expecting a sequel to be better is dumb, why would you do that?

Fair points fellas.

The money is pouring in more than ever before so they hardly have any incentive to iterate and improve.
Hopefully critics maybe wisen up a bit more?

Seems it's truly a tiny minority who have issues with Bethesda's legacy problems huh.

I don't give a shit about Fallout as a franchise, TES is more my jam.

I was just hoping Bethesda could learn lessons from this game's technical/RPG/story mishaps to fashion a better Scrolls game next time.

I'll probably skip it too, if it comes out the way you describe.

This backlash is only happening in niche parts of the internet that don't mean shit sales wise. Look at Twitch and Youtube. Those kids are just as crazy about Fallout as they were about Skyrim. The backlash that's needed just isn't there. There isn't even a hint of people tiring.

I just remembered last year's most disappointing argument, where Jeff made an impassioned speech about Destiny being a legendary car crash at launch and then they decided to give it to W_atc_h__D0gz.

(Ironically, back then the argument for WD was that this Ubisoft open world game had a slick BS debut trailer with an interesting hook - I know, shocking - so it was disappointing that it somehow managed to be a Ubisoft open world game).

Jeff is always a sucker for the "promise of the new generation of consoles" argument, which you saw with Watch Dogz last year and Fallout 4 today.

Plus new people get into these games all the time.

My uncle who was primarily a fps gamer has fallout 4 as his first and he absolutely ate it up. It consumed him in a way I've never seen before.

Not really. Fallout 4 sold better than ever. Certain publications actually attacked Jeff personally for daring to point out the console versions had significant flaws.

The message to Bethesda has been loud and clear for years now; keep doing what you're doing, the market will eat it up.

Why would they change? Why would anyone expect them to change?

Wow did not expect to come here and find people criticising Brad and Austin for their Fallout 4 opinions. I thought they spoke sense the whole time! Vinny just wasn't listening to them imo

Should I play fallout 1 or skip to 2?

You should play Fallout 1. When it co Es to the writing it might actually be better than the second one. The thing with the first one is the time limit. You only have so many days until you need to resolve the main quest and that is not for everyone. I don't know if there is a mod or cheat to disable that part.

Which pretty much proves my point that Fallout is done being a RPG.

I like it a lot, it's in my top 10, but I still think there's a case to be made for most disappointing, but it wasn't the discussion they were having. My problem with it is the writing and story is complete garbage and the dialogue system is a travesty. The narrative role-playing aspects have been almost completely gutted and at this rate I'd expect the next TES or Fallout to be even more watered down loot-driven ARPGs, which is a huge bummer.

I like it for what it is, but still mourn what it has lost.

I hate that Bethesda will never have the incentive to put in more than the minimal ever. I've given up on ever enjoying another one of their games at this point. It sucks that I will never be able to have the same feeling in one of their games that I had with Oblivion. Other companies have taken the reigns, though. CDPR does what Bethesdon't.

I wouldn't be terribly shocked if Fallout 5 removed dialogue options all together and just used scripted player dialogue.

Fallout should've been the franchise that cracked procedural dialogue and let the player type their own response and react to it. It's sad it's gone the opposite way.

I wholeheartedly agree.

I made that post in the moment of listening to Jeff speak and thinking of all the issues I've seen people bring up on Gaf with the game, but Bethesda are kings right now.

And Rooster teeth are fucking embarrassing for attacking Jeff over him pointing out technical flaws. It was bizarre and cringe worthy.

Cyberpunk 2077 please save us!

I found it funny but not unexpected that Alex describes Jenks as "David Tennant esque" but nobody brought up the character David Tennant actually voiced in Just Cause 3. (Not unexpected because he is barely in it.)
