Giant Bomb GOTY 2015 - Metal Gear Meets Its Mario Maker

I wholeheartedly agree.

I made that post in the moment of listening to Jeff speak and thinking of all the issues I've seen people bring up on Gaf with the game, but Bethesda are kings right now.

And Rooster teeth are fucking embarrassing for attacking Jeff over him pointing out technical flaws. It was bizarre and cringe worthy.

It's crazy to see Gaf turn on this game. Prior to launch, I got laughed at for making the exact same points people are now. I said that The Witcher raised the bar and people's standards. It's just taking them a long time to realize it.

Final fantasy XV will be the open world RPG to save us all.

I predict a good chunk of GAF will hate that game and I will be head over heals for it. Such is the way of Final Fantasy now.

Also we're at 100 pages for a thread about goty. Goddamn.

And it's Day Two.

I found it funny but not unexpected that Alex describes Jenks as "David Tennant esque" but nobody brought up the character David Tennant actually voiced in Just Cause 3. (Not unexpected because he is barely in it.)

I'd be surprised if anyone else but Vinny, who is a Doctor Who fan, knew who David Tennant was.

Why stop at removing dialogue from Fallout. Settlements can be the first step to a Fallout Maker game.

Isn't that basically what that Fallout app was?

Make your own NPCs in 5!

You know, I would actually not be mad if they have an easy way to let people create their own vignettes based on the fallout world.

When Fallout was revealed at this year's E3 I was like "Hell yeah!". When they revealed they eschewed Skills and railroaded the perk tree that's when I turned on the game, as an indication of where they wanted to go.

That game is just Fallout Farmville in ever conceivable way.

So long as they touch the ground when you create them.

Fallout Shelter is exactly the kind of bad shit that gives F2P such a stigma. It's exactly why I'm met with blank stares when I talk about how awesome PAD and Terra Battle are.

I haven't played Fallout 4 so can't speak on quality myself there.

But The Witcher 3 has "ruined" things for me because CD Projekt have raised my standards for open world RPG's to such a high level I didn't think possible.

Like don't get me wrong, I still want to get back to fallout 4.

But that's with knowing full well about the problems it has.

I've been saying this literally since the reveal. I basically said 'Bethesda better have a new writing staff, because I ain't dealing with that shit post-Witcher 3'. I was met over and over with arguments about clockwork worlds and Fallout not being about that.

Feeling incredibly vindicated. Not gonna lie.

Yeah I realized that about an hour (less probably) in and thought, "This is a game designed for my mom, why would they design a game for my mom?"

People played it like it was the freshest bizniss regardless.

In the last 12 months I have played 3 RPGs which have such superior writing compared to Fallout 4 it's not even funny. And two of those came from Kickstarter!

Only 3? I can think of at least 4, and I'm probably missing some.

Splatoon has better writing than Fallout 4 and the only damn world building that game has comes in dumb collectables.

Seriously cannot believe Brad & Austin were handwaving away the general jankiness of FO4 because somehow it being expected of Bethesda therefore makes it acceptable in some fashion. Fuck that shit. Plenty of other developers manage to build open worlds and keep that stuff to a minimum so I just don't buy that Beth somehow qualify for a pass in that regard. That is some major fanboy head in effect when you're incapable of seeing the wood for the trees.

Props for Jeff to calling Beth out on it. When they bought out ID everyone assumed that they'd leverage the technical expertise of the team that made RAGE to if not make a new engine for their open world games, at least radically improve the one they have, but nope. Just a small polish up of Gamebryo and 'hey we added base building' (who wanted this?) and moar guns!!!. Great. Opportunity missed.

What's your fourth one? I only remember Wasteland 2, Pillars of Eternity and Witcher 3. Maybe I am missing something.

Witcher, Pillars (Haven't played it, but have seen enough to judge it's great), Trails in the Sky SC and Trails of Cold Steel. If we count Yakuza 5 as an RPG, that as well.

isn't their argument against Fallout 4 being in the top 3 of no one does what they do more about the size of the group making the Fallout/Elder Scrolls. Isn't the Witcher 3 dev count way smaller same with the Wii U game

Best part of that most disappointing argument was that it went to that Toy Soldiers game little to no objection, something no follower of Giant Bomb predicted because no one even remembered it existed, plus it never seemed like they brought it up that much compared to the more high profile stuff.

Toy Soldiers seemed to "win" because Austin and Brad fought hard against FO4 and because everybody except Alex weren't that high on Hotline Miami 1 to begin with. When discussions go this long Brad always wins.

Jeff calling Splatoon a lost Dreamcast Game was one of those lightbulb going off over my head, holy shit realizations. I never noticed it before but it was 100% correct.

Hell yes! Loved that moment as well. It's not even meant in a mean way, it just feels like something we have lost somewhere down the line.

Visually, I think he's spot on. From a gameplay perspective, Splatoon has a deep polish and creativity that you really only see from Nintendo.

Both Shadowrun games I played in the past 12 months (Dragonfall and Hong Kong) have had better writing than Fallout 4 and I'm pretty sure at least one of them were Kickstarters.

I disagree with that. It's a bit too JRPG for me to really love it.

Plus every character is so goddamn... earnest in that 80's anime way.

Man I think Trails's story and characters kick the shit out of the Persona duology.

I love Trails and hate you for making me compare my babies.

I think the Persona 3+4 duology (4 moreso than 3) has a depth of character work that you don't see in games, really ever. I have yet to see a cast that feels more like real people than the Persona 4 cast. The main narratives are standard, but that's just the stage that the characters act on. It's their personal stories that actually matter.

Shit I forgot Shadowrun Hong Kong. I totally played that as well. Yeah that also had better writing. And yes both of those came from Kickstarter.
