Jan is pretty decent considering he was hired primarily to do production work, he's already better than Jason.
He is, his production skills are much better than Jason’s. But Jan plays one game. I’m fine with people playing a game and being passionate about it, but hearing him only bring up Pokémon is just so boring after a few times. I just zone out.

Jan is a good dude, but as the producer he the most responsible for the audio quality of GB West. There may be no what to make Ben sound ok.

You'd miss out on the quality inner monologue of Ben, such as this. I think he just needs a reboot sometimes after critical errors.
(couple seconds in at the timestamp)

Someone needs to make a compilation of all his gargling and umming and ahhing. It’d go for at least an hour.

I really don't understand their overbearing love for stupid shit like this. It's like when Jeff has raved about fucking clickers in the past. They are looking for something, and thinking something is there for this game, when it's not. It's stupid time waster bull shit, yet they spend so much time and energy on it.

Is the function of Quick Looks to inform or entertain?

If to Inform - surely they should do better research, and provide more information.

If to entertain - why not cut them down and edit out any parts that aren't amusing.

Even though they are the primary video uploads of GB I must admit I haven't watched one in about a year.
It depends. If it's a big name game or when they have personal interest in, ideally they'd prep and find a few sections they want to show off. You'd then grab a QL partner that you can play off of and give the audience something that is both entertaining and informative. If it's a "so bad, it's good type of game" or something weird, you might just want to go in blind and produce something interesting by playing off your QL partner(s). They've rarely ever been about edited content in a QL unless it was due to a technical hiccup or some weird NDA restriction. The idea behind GiantBomb beyond the community driven video game wiki was to have site where the audience knew the editorial staffs personality.

When they started, they all knew each other from their Gamespot days, played well off of each other and had a wealth of knowledge. The first few additions to the site came with extensive knowledge or the drive to research a topic before speaking on it. While I didn't care for the mesh of Patrick's or Austin's personalities with the core group, they were both well spoken and knowledgeable. Dan and Jason came next with Dan having the much bigger personality and drive. Jason has always been ho-hum personality wise but he is a video guy so he was featured a lot less before Dan headed to GBEast. (sort of like how Jan pinch hits now). Now that Jason has a more prominent role, it shows his weakness a prominent personality. He's just kind of there, if that makes sense. Not good, but not really bad either but kind of hard to play off of when collaborating with content. I'd put Ben and Jan in that same category as well. That makes all of their collocations tough as you don't have a dominant, outgoing personality to make most the content interesting. And really, outside of a few games, Brad's always been pretty reserved as well. That puts the pressure on Jeff to carry content as he's the only one with that type of personality. Vinny has the same issue on the East coast except Abby has a strong personality but isn't very eloquent nor knowledgeable of the subject matter she covers. She's in a tough place with her lack of experience, especially compared to the glut that her co-workers have but a little research and prep would help her overcome so much. She just always seems nervous and overly hyper.

Speaking of Abby, that Nazi Zombie QL was rough. I didn't make it very far in before shutting it off.

I don't understand it either. It really makes me take them less seriously. These are tiny flash in the pan type of games. Zero lasting power. Like when they devoted a part of the GOTY discussion bringing up both HQ (the mobile trivia game) and Live Or Let Die (The free to play game)... Where were those games a solid month after? No where, forgotten to time except the few weirdo die hards who play it religiously.

Again, I have no problem with people liking and talking about games of any sort, but you have to have realistic conversations about them. HQ was a fun quick mobile game that did something unique and different, but to bring it up hundreds of times, stopping the podcast at one point to play it live and acting like it's going to be something more than just a flavor of the week type of gaming experience sets wild expectations.

It really has made me reevaluate Giant Bomb as a whole. You can like your weird little niche gaming sector, but don't act like it's better than it is. Which is what Giant Bomb does. Devoting so much conversation to something like Clash Royale (a game soley made for money and never once as a video game or artistic piece, just "GIVE US MONEY YOU STUPID MORONS!!) or a clicker, and spending more time than necessary makes me realize that they actually have just as bad of opinions about games than the people they regularly make fun of or bag on. They are just as bad as someone like a Shenmue fan or a Sonic fan. At least those games have stood the test of time, and have people who had a vision for a game other than just dollar signs.

"Clickers" are the favorite genre of the founder of Giant Bomb. When are people going to realize that it's over?
Too true, coming in second is generic multiplayer war shooter. I've never understood how people can just play a single type of game. I play everything. Yeah, there are genres that I tend to be pulled towards more, ones that hold my interest much more than others, but I will try pretty much anything.... except games that are obviously just quick cash grabs or ones that have zero effort put into them. How many streams have they done with Call of Duty in the last six months? I feel like every podcast is filled with around 15 minutes of Call of Duty talk.

Was listening to their steam request stream earlier. Checked in and Ben had the helm and loaded up some anime girl shooter game. Ben checked the steam tags and one said nudity (game didn't appear to) and said "nope" to which Brad replied "It's a premium stream" in a dismissive manner. That was one of the first things I've heard in a while that sounded like hey, GB may have some hope.

Ben of course ignores any of the option menus he's being told to explore and is completely uncomfortable stating "I don't want to play this" but Brad shuts him down. Weird, I figured he'd be into that futanari, tenticle cartoon stuff. That guy is so lame. Any stream he helms is a spaz fest clicking as quickly as possible through anything relevant story wise or in menu. Rorie even says sarcastically "Sure am glad I can speed read, Brad". He was pretty excited to play a game called 'Slippery Sausage' though.

That gal gun segment with Jeff and the creeper cam was stupid anime games done right.

I guarantee that his internet history is full of horrific pornography. It’s always the ones who virtue signal the most that have the most to hide. Especially a walking female repellant, such as Ben.

Brad when he can be more interested is great and will call people out, my favourite one is when he finally called out Dan for always being the heel and says it's why people will not like you, Dan changed almost immediately and starting being more likeable

Is Rorie of all people turning into the bad boy of Giant Bomb?
Is he reading the flood of unsubscribe notifications and trying to make a on screen personality of himself with the usatisfied user base?

How come the tame community manager who loves cute puppies, is the most unfiltered talker in the crew when it comes to sex jokes and guys humor?

Brad's the man, of course..."

@(person)
"I would say get to reducin’ then. Ben’s the man and I can’t fathom how his presence could impose on your enjoyment of the content. To each their own, for sure. I just can’t see it. I think he fits so well with the West crew. "

Because he has to always be talking, no matter what. He has a stream of consciousness thing that whatever pops into his head has to be said, completely unfiltered. He also never pays attention to anyone but his own thoughts, which will result in a topic being discussed at length and when that topic is done, he will literally chime in 3 seconds later with the question that was just answered and talked about.

Also, I just started the Steam Stream for background noise, and the opening line from Brad is "Steam!" excited to be running a show for once. IMMEDIATELY Ben starts talking about chicken, killing all potential momentum. He seriously is the king of killing rolling conversation. Brad then again tries to start the show again and Ben continues to ramble on incoherently about chicken... Brad sounds so defeated right at the beginning of this stream... no wonder he never does anything at work, I'd hate working there too if I had to deal with someone like that.

Jan and Jason seem like cool dudes but why are they on the podcast? Are weebs really that big of a GB demographic? 95% of Jan is Pokemon and 95% of Jason is Monster Hunter. I wonder if they've ever played a game not developed in Japan. My fast forward finger is getting sore.

I just went and watched it because of your post and holy shit, it's exactly as you describe. Ben just shouting things and/or laughing/screaming as loud as he can manage. It's not surprising though, it's his MO, and he does it on the podcast and videos all the time.

He does and it's the worst. I honestly can't believe they hired him. It's a wonder how that site is even still functioning. Anytime he's around all the conversation takes a dive to become near unbearable to listen to.

Always amusing how identical Dabby and Ben are. Screaming louder for attention, saying nothing of importance and not knowing anything gaming related and more. xD

My favourite is when Ben leans back from the mic and screams “WOOOOOOOO!” when someone else is talking, which he has started doing randomly at least 2-3 times a podcast for no apparent reason.

He is quite possibly the most annoying person in the world. The guy needs some sense slapped into him.

I wonder if he does this out in public.

A couple years ago, during a sale I bought a more years of premium.... Also their sub is $35 a year.... That's barely anything, pretty much chump change.

Yeah, Jeff does it every once in a while, to not clip the mic out, but Ben has just been overusing it. He's like that child that sees something funny, and then repeats the same thing over and over and over again, not realizing no one else finds it funny.

I've been playing games for almost 30 years. FPS games have been my favorite genre by far ever since I first played Wolfenstein 3D on DOS. I play a lot of games but I still find great enjoyment playing MW. I do get your point though, it's a games podcast/site, have some variety.

Man... I haven't heard that name in a while... I personally wish they would have poached Peter Brown. He fits in so much better. He's smart, knowledgeable and actually cares about video games, the history of them and the preservation aspect as well. I remember when he first started showing up a bit more, back in early 2017, him and Jeff has an amazing podcast segment about older hardware and emulation... I enjoyed that conversation than anything in the past few years combined. When he came on the Saturn stream or even the NES classic steams... He brings so much more to the conversation than Ben ever has.

That whole thread is something else.

This guy get's it, though:

"OK go away then"

"Fyi constructive criticism can't apply to the people of Giant Bomb. None of us actually know them on a personal level, and they're not in some horrible situation where they need to change themselves. Everyone is so fucking dramatic. I get it, the way we connect to personality content can dictate how we feel about the people on a minuscule level but it doesn't actually matter. Decent people don't lose their shit at family members/friends who annoy them. You talk it out, honestly. If you don't like someone on Giant Bomb, learn to live with it or move on to another site. "

There needs to be a license test to use the internet.

I love how people who immediately respond with “stop being so dramatic!” Are the only ones flying off the handle and freaking out and over exaggerating everything.

And how come constructive criticism is not allowed to be applied to Giant Bomb? Why are they immune to it? That makes zero sense and frankly is BS.

They provide a paid product/service. For those who paid for said product should be allowed to voice their opinion. Obviously since there is no consequences for anything said online, you’ll get a lot of people who without any thought post extremely mean and horrible things they’d never actually say in real life. But there absolutely is something called free speech where we are allowed to post our thoughts and opinions.

Saying they are exempt from and criticism, be that constructive or otherwise is a stupid and wrong way of thinking. Criticizing Ben for being hired and proving to be the absolute most annoying person I can think of, is absolutely allowed. We pay for a product and since they are so focused on being as secret about their business as possible, we were blindside with someone (two actually) who completely changed the entire landscape of what GiantBomb is.

Just saying “if you don’t like it, tough luck, go somewhere else” is not helpful in anyway shape or form. It’s extremely hostile and will only make people react in a more negative manner. There has to be a give and take, a compromise and understanding. Those types of posters do more harm for the community than any 12 year old, who does a drive by comment of racial slurs or anyone saying they don’t like a particular person.

Also, you can also see the contradictory statement of the poster too. “Constructive criticism doesn’t apply”.... serval sentences later....
“If you have a problem, you talk it out”

“Don’t be dramatic!” also “Deal with it or go away forever!!!!”

What a complete idiot. I completely agree the Internet is a privilege, not a right.

Part of the issue is how we communicate on the internet. Everything tends to be so exaggerated to one extreme or the other which makes getting to and taking constructive criticism difficult as you have to filter through all of the noise. You'll have the portion of the community that is dissatisfied with any change and talk in black and white rhetoric and another portion that will defend any change while writing off valid criticisms as "haters", "sexism" or whatnot. And If I put myself into the shoes of the long time staff, it's probably hard to avoid soaking up too much of either of those extremes. it's probably why they aren't very active in the community besides monitoring chat during live events. From what little I've seen, I do think they've let their community moderators become a little too tribal in their defense of criticism, but it's hard to be to invested of late. It just reminds me of most of their content. What little I check out isn't the worst I've consumed but it's not terribly engaging or entertaining either. I guess walking away isn't the worst suggestion, I know it's happened for me naturally. I've mentioned it before but they were really the last gaming content producers I regularly consumed.

Now they say they aren’t going to PAX East this year. Different excuses to why they are reducing their team for E3 or maybe even skipping it.

So many excuses. When was the last time they told the truth about anything?

Yeah, clearly just because they work for the same business, means the people involved are all the same and all the content is the exact same, so you can’t compare something to the exact same thing... oh brother.

I’ve given up trying to be part of the freaking cult. It’s weird. I unsubbed from the reddit, and only posted in that thread to help someone looking for a VR game like that free to play coin game.

There is no rationalizing with those psychos. Any baseline criticism wanting the product to be the best it can be is met with such hostility and hatred. I absolutely don’t blame GB for not wanting to interact with their community, they are one of the absolute worst I’ve ever seen.

If you add it all up it's the best part of 4 months a year they get off
  • one day a week "work" from home - 46 days
  • vacation days - 25 days
  • sick days - 25 days (honestly this is probably a underestimate for Ben/Abby/Brad)
  • public holidays - 10 days
  • total = 106 days or about 21 weeks
It's actually kind of impressive they produce as much content as they do!
