God Of War: Combat is still fast, No QTE, spirit of a classic fantasy adventure game

I don't understand how people would have expected a sex minigame, it wouldn't match the more mature, serious tone of the game. It wouldn't fit with the new Kratos who is reinventing himself as a responsible family man and mentor for his son.

I was kinda miffed about the removal of sex mini games but I understand where SSM and Cory might want to go now with the new direction.

Hopefully no holding back on nudity though lol
Edit: as a 15 year old, a high school friend legit recommended me GoW 1 due to the sex mini game
After playing it I told him he left out all the other good parts like insane boss fights and gore.

I don't know if I'll hate this game, but I hate the direction this game is going.

Wait for reviews and keep an open mind.
You never know and could be pleasantly surprised!

All that sounds good, but I still don't like the new camera perspective, especially during the combat. Why does it have to be so close and you can hardly see the surrounding? Other games like Witcher 3 and FFXV also pulls the camera closer while wandering around but in combat it's zoomed out accordingly. What's up with that?

Pretty sure he's Greek.

Not exactly sure what to make of this description of their new version of QTE, but as long as we still get to take down huge monsters I'm fine

I'm trying to. Not easy because I really loved the other god of war games for what they were. I liked the camera. I liked the ridiculous cinematic QTE's. I liked the constant yelling. I liked the voice actor. I liked the combat.

Just so many changes to the series. I guess I'm just old.

I'm with you man. I'm a little worried about this one honestly. I know it'll be amazing, but It appears to be going in a direction that I, personally, don't like.

I absolutely loved the openness of combat with that camera angle. If they scaled the camera back a tad it would help A LOT. Did they get rid of jumping too? The most badass thing about the first game was the verticality and how time would slow down when Kratos is launching the enemy. Combat looks too grounded now.

Also, if they try pulling a Naughty Dog with this game, I'm going to lose my mind.

Imo this exactly what this series needs. I love God of War but another game with Kratos using the Blades of ___, pissed off and angry at everyone, square, square, triangle, etc. I can't. It would be God of Bore tbh.

I'm glad they decided to evolve the series, but I wish it evolved in a character action sorta way like Bayonetta or DMC. Combat still looks a little too button mashy. Luckily, everything else in the game looks fantastic so I'll be there
when it goes on sale

How the fuck am I going to get my red orbs with no sex mini-game?

Was just wondering about this....with this game seemingly about some sort of redemption of Kratos as a character and having his son along with him for most or all of the game, i don't know how they could weave one of those mini games into this one and not make it seem completely tacked on and out of place. Not to mention the fact that orbs aren't in this game which is what you would get in the mini game after.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?

Easy Kratos takes his son to a whore house and the son has the sex mini game to make him a man.

Mash X to last a little longer!

Well this game looks even more based on spectacle than the previous games. Looks like Ryse or something. Not my cuppa tea for gameplay but visually it looks awesome.

One thing I've always been confused about regarding Kratos

Is he black? I know he has an African American VO, and i'm sure there is some promotional art of him without his war paint. Just that - feature wise - he doesn't look black in any of this new artwork.

Pretty sure he's a dark skinned mediterranean, not necessarily black, but he's not white either.

How is this a QTE?

They're not, but I feel like they've evolved into "Time Events" lol. Like, if the enemy is about to die, it triggers a sequence, if you press nothing, nothing happens and the enemy kind of gets up and starts fighting again a little bit.

Like this :

Full hp enemy -> Bim bam boom -> enemy at 10% -> sequence triggered -> Kratos either kills it now, and it moves on to the next thing, or the enemy gets up -> Kratos hits it like he usually would, the enemy just dies without sequence.

I like this more than a QTE. The lame part about QTEs is they often use random buttons, like the button to jump may be used to slash someone's head.... it breaks the immersion. If they keep a key for a specific action I'm down with it.

I gotta say I was skeptical about the changes at first. But after seeing the combat at E3 and reading this. I feel so ashamed to have ever even thought of doubting Barlog and the boys over at SSM. Day 1.

I am so pleased this isn't open world. After Horizon's Ubi-design, I dont trust sony's internal studios with doing open world gameplay. Also, I think in general the choice should be made on what's suits the title, rather than just forcing a genre.

I read that bit on the combat, but man, I dunno. Based on the gameplay we've seen, it still looks like shit to me. I'll be happy to be wrong about this, but it's definitely the biggest bummer to me about the game.

The rest looks fine, just not sure I can enjoy a whole game of that over the shoulder melee combat. God Hand it is not.

I might get shit for it but I never thought the God of War games had great combat. It wasn't bad and it worked for what it was but it was never something on the level of a character action game like Devil May Cry 3 or something along those lines. It was flashy and fun but there wasn't a ton of depth even in God of War 3 and you could often spam attacks with ease against most enemies. I welcome a shake up.

Huh, but the QTEs were fun when you were fighting enemies/bosses in GoW. Sounds less and less like a GoW game (and less interesting), might as well have just made a new IP at this point.

QTEs are over. Control is now yours

This sounds great. I was surprised that many people on GAF were defending them in SpiderMan just because that game was pretty and looks cool. Most people are growing tired of them. I am happy that developers are not only beginning to realize this, but are growing tired of them too. It's nice to see that this game is being designed from the outset to give player's control. When your biggest setpieces in your game are built around QTEs, it's time to go back to the drawing boards. Hopefully, Insomniac is taking notes.

Nah, I agree. Combat got the job done. It was full of anger and rage with the stomps, ripping stuff in two, stabbing, etc... It matched the tone of the game but I don't think it was very deep either. Still enjoyable though.

Probably part of the reason why I am open to this new direction with the combat.

I don't see how you could get shit for something that has been recognized and acknowledged for over a decade.

GOW's combat is easy to get into and do stuff that looks cool, but it never offered the versatility or difficulty of more dedicated character action games.

What GOW offered, however, that good character action games didn't and still don't, is a complete, well-rounded package. Incredible presentation, a decent story (especially for an action game in 2005), some clever puzzles, and some interesting levels to traverse in various ways. It melded pretty good character action combat (the best the West had ever produced, by far) and great everything else.

I don't think this shake-up is going to result in significantly better combat, but at least it's not Batman-style.

I agree the combat was always fun just not deep across so many games with the same movesets can get pretty old.

Sounds great. I'm glad they removed the childish sex scenes from past games, and the pointless gore. I enjoyed using the Blades of Chaos though :(

After last year's showing, the new trailer surprised me at how fast the combat looked. Looks even weightier and more powerful than the Blades of Chaos while being even more versatile

You can really appreciate the animations when it's slowed down

Irtmx76.gif

Look at how every movement of the axe is weighty and how the hands twirl the weapon into the next attack and catch the downward momentum to swing into another blow. And then for the other attack, how Kratos is flipping the axe behind his back and catching it with his other hand.

I think that's part of what making the combat feel so heavy and forceful. By capturing the physical movement needed to pull of each strike, they can sell the weight and power of the attacks

So IGN in their facebook video today(Marty Silva and Alana Pearce) mentioned that the game is just one single cut from start till the end of the game. What does he mean by that?

Not sure how to be clearer?

I'm saying I'm glad that SSM resisted the temptation, and possibly pressure, of making this an open world game. I think classical linear adventure suits GoW best. I thought Horizon had some great things about it, but ultimately really suffered from open world bloat with lots of shoehorned elements borrowed the Ubisoft design methodology of filling a map with checkboxes rather than creating an organic environment, and I'd worry the same fate would befall an open world GoW game.

You know what long take scenes are, like the hallway fight in Oldboy or entering the restaurant in Goodfellas? Or how recently Inside has one uncut journey throughout?

Like that
