God of War - Review Thread

The problem is that we do not know it could most favorites, most clicks etc. It could also be on specific people which would be really fucked up. These days I trust opencritic way more since they are also very transparent about their systems. But even they they are very close for most games. I just wish metacritic would ignore these obviously click bait scores.
Fair enough. Let's use his main example witcher 3 tho. Nothing this gen should be above it according to him.

Witcher 3
metacritic: 92
opencritic: 92

GOW
metacritic: 94
opencritic: 95

So the unbiased difference is even bigger.
Anyway.. my point remains. Saying that a score based on consensus is wrong is pure denial.

i know that people like different things, but if we are going with your logic, some people liked games like The order 1886 and Knack, why aren't they in the 90+ ??

it's an insult to The Witcher 3 to compare games like Nier and persona 5 to it, in fact, Nier 2 is one of the biggest traps i got into in this generation, i bought it due to the insane hype, and i didn't enjoy it at all, i hated the shit out of it, i know that a lot people liked it, but it's scores is where it belongs or might be a little higher (88), i know that i haven't played GOW 4 yet, but i'm positive that it doesn't deserve a higher score than Witcher 3, in fact, no game in this generation or in the last decade deserves a higher score than Witcher 3 ( Demon's souls and BOTW are very close though)

all i'm trying to say is that reviewers have gone soft in the last two years, they give high scores to any game now, the 90+ has lost it's spark, wait for Days gone, i'm sure it's gonna stink and yet you will see it score 88+
Trap!!? What trap!!? Actually unlike most games NieR Automata doesn’t have “shiny” graphics to hide behind and NieR came out a year when both big western and Japanese games came out and yet lot people enjoyed the game. But I’m guessing you are one those people who think your opinion is superior than others and if there is games YOU don’t like there is no way others should like it either.

Hah, the Witcher 3 example is a poor one. Comparing an open world game, where the chance of having a bad experience is higher, to a tightly-knit, linear game, is basically unfair for the example.

God of War is definitely going to have an easier time scoring better, and it just speaks to the kind of experience the critics have, which is practically perfection in their eyes. Clickbait, at this point, is a review that gives it anything less than 5/10, and has nothing or poorly constructed criticisms to back up the failing score.

Oh sure. When it comes to rating games for example, I can say that the physical copy came in packaging that matches the physical dimensions of a DVD case. Or what DF/VG Tech do, technical analysis is fundamentally objective. However...

So, I cannot play NieR and say it's a masterpiece, while acknowledging its faults? Who gets to decide what can be called a masterpiece?

Maybe it's just me, but I feel that qualifying something as good or bad is very much subjective. A contrived example: a reviewer has basically no skill playing video games whatsoever. All he can do is press a button, badly at that. The game requires pressing a single button, with no regard to the timing. According to the reviewer, the gameplay is the best ever. So according to the reviewer, very good. According to you, I guess not?

Which brings me back to the original point. All reviews (when reviewing aspects of a game that are not measurable) are subjective. You may argue that people in general should feel more like you do - that's a different topic (preferably in the off-topic section).
Did you not read what I wrote? I was giving an example, you can definitely play Nier say it's a masterpiece and acknowledge its faults, that's exactly what I said I just used Witcher 3 as an example.

What kind of contrived case is this, I would expect a game reviewer to have some knowledge about you know, games, all I said was you (the reviewer) needs to be able to put his prefences aside (only being able to press one button lol) and realize it's a bad game even though you enjoyed it, and vice versa, realizing it's a good game even though you didnt like it.

Sorry, I was confused by that other viper I was initially replying to and who made rather similar points. My bad.

Imma Gamefly the hell outta this game. 94 or not, it's single player and will die out after one playthrough. I did the same with HZD and will do the same with Spiderman. I just don't feel 60 dollars for God of War is worth it unless there's gonna be cheap or free DLC. Throw that in there and I'll buy it. By comparison I spent 60 on Monster Hunter, played over 200 hours and got free dlc. I mean come on....God of War is 30 hours...just not justified. I'm sure it's a fantastic experience, but I'm looking for longevity.

30 hours is pretty solid for a linear game like this. Way above the curve. No telling the budget either, I'm sure it's well over 100 million, probably 200+ with marketing. I dunno, I don't care about playtime vs cost of game. I care about the experience more than the price of entry.

The way you see things...I put 1500 hours into Smite, it cost $0. Maybe I should wait for MonHun World to be free before I play it? Like seriously, if everyone had your mentality to just rent a game, no good looking, high budget games would be getting made. We'd be stuck with 2D pixel art games for the rest of our lives.

Sorry, I spent a million hours browsing NeoGAF. Why even play games at this point? Kappa

All this talk about scores reminds me of how it went with TLOU.

"The game can never be that good. It's just another zombie-game. It's just another game with cover-mechanics."

It's almost like people forget that Sony Santa Monica is one of Sony's best studios (which says quite a lot imho) and arguably one of the best in the entire industry.
They've always set new bars, although there definitely was fatigue from the franchise.
Now that they apparently succeeded in breathing fresh air into the series, all of the above somehow doesn't matter anymore and to some it's outside the realm of possibility that the game truly is a masterpiece?

Makes sense. You have plucked at my need to support art. This game is art if nothing else. However, I tried the same with HZD and I got so bored with it before finishing it. So glad I gamefly'd that one. From what I've heard and read, maybe the character development will be much better here and keep me hooked. New Plan, buy Physical copy of GOW...return to gamestop when im done.

Also don't compare this to SMITE....completely different business model and you're unfairly comparing apples to oranges.

I am really mind-boggled by how much unnecessary "anti-trust" is being read day in day out about GOW by now. Basically, there is nothing that can be done right in this community of players anymore. My short and concise advise to all people who are so uncertain about the game being good: Buy the game and play the game.

Easy, like in good old SNES days? Just play it. Have fun! See you around.

Yea bad comparison I suppose. HZD was a different beast to me as well. I initially did not like it very much. Then I did, and started doing side quests and all the content. Then I got bored and was not digging it at all once again, the side content was shit and repetitive. So I started doing main missions only and had a solid time with it.

That said I'm still worried about GoW. It's not GoW to me, but it could still be good for sure.

I haven't played a GOW since GOW 3 so this reboot is kinda nice. I almost look at it as a new IP. However I get your point as well. What if Santa Monica decided to stay in the same vein of GOW's predecessors, but with the same budget and visuals and production values. I think to myself. "Would I have preferred that game instead?" I really can't answer until I play this one, but I feel the answer is "no".

Yep, hard to say. Viewing this as a new IP or a reboot is the best way to look at it. I'm certainly hype for it come Friday. Hope it's one of those titles that I wake up in the morning and want to play it the second I get up the next day. Those sort of games are rare for me.

Skillup YouTube reviewer didn't like Horizon but loved this God of War, even I'm still skeptical about this God of War, his review make me feel much better about the game.
So I watched that video and goddamn that was an unfortunate line about DMC and Bayonetta lol. Had to check out Twitter to see if there was any controversy and sure enough there was. It's too bad because the rest of the video really sold me on this game, but saying you can button mash DMfuckingC was not a good choice of words.

Yeah, I mean sure you can button mash in games like Bayonetta if you play on easier difficulty same way you play Vanquish like typical third person shooter if you play on easier difficulty. That can be true any action game if play easier difficulty setting.

Agreed. And the tough part is how egregiously uncalled for it was, it's almost like he actually wanted to stir up shit.

Got to get them comments, and people coming back to comment on comments racks up views.

Also how would button mashing eve work in DMC? It's entire combo system makes it impossible to mash. Well you probably can in DmC.

eventually i'll play the game and see if it actually deserves the scores that surpassed Witcher 3, MGS V and Bloodborne (highly doubt it)
It's good to have doubts but going by the reviews it sounds better than all of those. Bloodborne is my current GoTG but I can see GoW surpassing it. I'm not going to start quoting people because I'm sure people will just say, "who is that?" "who cares what he thinks he gave this game this." so on and so forth. I've seen people calling it the GoTG, one calling it his favorite game ever, etc. I've never seen the amount of praise this game as gotten ever before.

I think it was either that click bait strategy since any publicity is good publicity or it was kind of a frustration response since the new GOW combat was mocked for months by Hack and Slash fans. The first theory is indeed way more likely.

And you can't button mash on DMC. You kind of can in Bayo but that obviously would be a wrong way of playing the game, but you'd get fucked in DMC unless you luck out and just barely beat with a low score. Truly a baffling thing to say.

Ok, explain BoTW then. The Witcher 3 is great but it lacks in one of it's main features. The combat is lackluster.

Btw guys, We 95 metacritic now.

I just realized, him calling it a button masher would all but confirms he plays DMC on easy automatic wouldn't it? That literally the only way it's possible to button mash and do anything in DMC. Gross!
Also I take back what I said, even DmC punishes you for mashing with color coded enemies and shit. You can play DMC2 like it's fucking classic Tomb Raider, so I would let him have that one.

What if the reviews are good because the game is actually good?
Let's wait for the game to be released before we bash reviewers...
I don't know how many reviews and discussions the doubters have read or viewed but from what I've seen, I think the naysayers will be eating a lot of crow.

I just watched a discussion that Game Informer posted. The guy who wasn't as enthusiastic about it still says it is his favorite GoW and he loves it. Andrew Reiner loved it even more and compared it to RE4 as far as a reinvention of the series. That's some high praise!

Zelda focused on adventuring instead of having strong story elements and doesn't have RPG. It's just like the comparison to God of War. Nintendo focused the experience so that there is less possibility of scrutiny while Witcher 3 has a lot more complexity in terms of story and RPG. Santa Monica focused their experience on combat and story, moreso than Witcher 3.

In general though, open world can have more problems. My problem with BotW is it's lackluster story, but most fans overlook it because it's accepted that Zelda will never have complex stories.

I don't think there was much doubt on the game itself being good. It's more of some reviewers going nuts over the actual combat calling it the best ever, which is where questioning comes in, especially when some are calling DMC a button masher in the process, which is a factually wrong statement for DMC1, 3, and 4 unless you enable automatic mode which is part of easy mode. It does look better than previous videos up to this point since you now have more than stock Sony footage, but it's no secret most critics kind of fail when it comes to in-depth analyst on stuff like fighting games (I remember Game Informer saying Mortal Kombat Deception had possibly the best fighting game combat engine once when it came out) and more complex action games, not to mention some takes off points for difficulty/lacking easy mode even if that was the point of the game.

I think it was kotaku that got mad Metal Gear Rising didn't have a dedicated dodge/didn't know how dodging worked and thought parry was the only defense, and bashed it's combat engine.

BOTW has a simple story but it's beautifully told. It's a tale of regret and guilt and it's done elegantly and I never understood the complaints about the story. Yes it's understated, but its portrayal of the aftermath of the hero failure is pretty unusual in the industry. It has some plot holes however it's kind of like an anime in that it emphasizes the theme over the plot. And the ending being about relief instead of the regular satisfaction/resignation actually caught me off guard.

It's a much better told story than Horizon, for example. It's sparse but it fits the idea.

God of war is more a movie where you walk through.
Witcher 3 is more a complex RPG that takes a ton of time to do and see everything which can push people away ( like me )
BoTW is more a adventure time of game with puzzle elementals where story is the the backburner and a scripted movie experience that's full of action simple isn't happening.

I think all 3 have different audiences.

You beat it or watched a full playthrough? From what I've seen it has a lot of gameplay with minimal story segments that remove control. A lot of the talking happens while you're moving or in the boat. Hell, there are only 6 characters according to a couple reviewers but each is pretty in depth. I spent a HUGE amount of time in dialogues in The Witcher 3.

If you like simple stories, sure. I don't. I get bored of them. I got bored of Ni No Kuni 2 recently for the same thing.

I found Horizon's story to be extremely interesting and engaging which kept it fun from beginning to end. Thought provoking and complex stories are big for me.

I played a bunch on my PSP and PS2 never did the newer ones. So it's based on that. Dunno what the new one brings tho.

I mean, the best ever combat comes down to personal opinion. It doesn't need to have the most technical to feel the best overall. I think animations, enemy hit reactions, options, graphics can all add up to giving a game the most satisfying combat one has ever played.

They haven't spoiled a good bit of why the combat gets crazy later but just from previews, it looks very fun with many opportunities for variety. Throwing the axe and positioning yourself to hit enemies in the back when you recall it, going bare-fisted, a quick dodge by pressing the dodge button once ducking an attack and then kicking the enemy to the ground, a roll when you press the button twice, juggles and then being able to pin an enemy to a tree by throwing the axe, the shield attacks, freezing enemies and kicking them into others, having Atreus as a decoy shooting arrows and he also has his own skill tree, etc.

We'll see but just from videos, the combat looks like the most satisfying thing ever IMO.

Oh, pardon me, I thought you were talking about the new one, see what happens when this new entry has no subtitle and is just called the same name? lol, I mean Resident Evil 7 was way different with new characters but they didn't start over. This should be called GoW 4.

One thing that really interests me is something I heard by listening to the "Lost Pages of Norse Mythology" podcast. Its how Atreus is taught all this knowledge by his mother, so everything he knows is from all these stories. While Kratos sees everything as a threat. Atreus is able to translate and tell Kratos all about the world they're in.

My step daughter speaks Russian and her mom is from Russia. I don't speak Russian and at 4 years old she's capable of translating the words. It's very fascinating and it's made the dynamic in this game really stand out to me.

This place has become very interesting, with all the varied opinions... It's really a melting pot. I love it.
I can see everyone has their preferences, what they relate to or consider an extension of their personality. Whether it's BOTW, Nier, Dark Souls or Bayonetta.
I'm so excited to play such an acclaimed game and add it to all the amazing experiences we've had this generation. I also hope the likes of EA and Activision can learn something from it... something positive for the industry.

I honestly think he/they do, at least on their other Laymen Gaming channel. They seem to bandwagon on internet rumors, such as the staff stuff at Bioware was just pure negativity and most of their stuff is very click-baity.

I myself am super excited for GoW, took the day off for a longer four-day weekend.

"Linear single player is dead"
And then Guile's theme played as God of War's metacritc walks past.

Also Phil Spencer is being nice on twitter about GoW's scores, but we all know he's looking at Sea of Thieves' scores and crying on the inside. Shouldn't have forced co-op then cancelled Scalebound bitch.

I have mixed thoughts.

David Jaffe, the creator of the series, described the original God of War as "Heavy Metal (the movie and magazine) meets Clash of The Titans" and that sums it up perfectly, it was like a teenage boy's id sprung to life in the world of Greek myth, as an actual teen when the first two God of Wars were released I of course ate it right up, especially since the first God of War was the first game I ever saw nudity in, that was an eye opener lol

Yeah, it's all so politically incorrect by today's standards but so what? That's what makes it awesome.

So I'm not too keen on how this new one has moved away from all that, it just seems overly serious to me, if the original series was heavy metal (the music genre) this seems more like, I don't know, folk rock?

Tell me, I'm assuming there's definitely no "sex mini game" but is there at least still titillating nudity? That Aphrodite sequence in 3 was hot as fuck, virtual boobies is just part of the fun of this series to me and I wanna see what PS4 rendered boobies look like, if we can't have that because of political correctness it makes me not even want to play it.

That said, I'll probably still play it but it's so lame that's where we're at now as a culture.
