Good historical epic films?

Usually around the holidays I watch at least one good historical epic. Last year I didn't watch one, but the year before I watched spartacus and Ben Hur. This year I'm going to watch Lawrence of Arabia. What are some other movies I might like?

unbelievable it's a 1956 movie

I recently watched Bridge on the River Kwai on blu-ray, definitely recommend seeing it if you haven't.

Might as well make it a David Lean double feature, since you are watching Lawrence.

I'm often conflicted about historical epics. They always take massive liberties with the actual events, which I do not admire, but I find myself enjoying most of them anyway. I could rattle off a list, but are you looking for new films, older films, any particular setting?

Mongol is pretty snazzy, and Tadanobu Asano kicks arse no matter what movie he's in.

Problem is I feel that Mongol would truly be epic once the other two movies come out for it.

I'm not sure if this one fits your viewing habits but it's certainly a great historical epic. Just not in the sense of big ancient armies colliding.

Queen Margot

It basically retells the story of the massacre on St. Bartholomew's day during the French Wars of Religions. Here, have a trailer:

I really enjoyed Agora from last year. It doesn't necessarily fit the mold of your traditional 'historical epic', but it's a damn good film however you split it.

Plus, if you're a straight guy (and sane), Rachel Weisz. Hell, I'm gay, but she'd make me have second thoughts.

Oh, and what about

The New World

Fantastic movie, though apparently not for everyone. It's really quiet and slow-paced which some people don't like.

OP is my twin. I recently watched The Ten Commandments, and now I want to watch Lawrence of Arabia and Ben Hur.

Go for The Ten Commandments or Ben Hur.

Fuck yeah, list more films like this please. I think OP wants more films like this one here.

I don't know how far back you want to go and they are not movies but Band of Brothers and The Pacific are pretty epic IMO.

Also Gladiator

I will also nominate Master and Commander

Probably the manliest movie ever made. I consider M&C to be a truly flawless film.

Check out the Director's Cut of Kingdom of Heaven as well. Actually nearly every recommendation in this thread is great.

GLADIATOR

I stopped counting how many times i've seen this masterpiece.

One of the best movies of all time.

The Alamo (classic)
Lawrence of Arabia
How the West Was Won
Patton
Apocalypse Now
The Last Emperor
Dances with Wolves

ROME hbo tv series

i actually watched the director's cut of alexander a couple of weekends ago, i think its pretty interesting to watch, the movie is very ambitious and looks great, but it feels more like a text book and is really dry, the movie isnt very entertaining and the dramatic arc is sort of meh.
