somebody on that forum did a translation on the third page and said this:

so basically, damage is only for race cars and not the other cars?

Yes. GT cars, rallye cars, will have damage. But no way we will see damage on a Audi A4 or on a Ferrari.

I'm french, but it would be to long to translate everything, and my english is too bad.

I try with the help of google translator :

------------------------------------

- Kazunori coming at the job in a Porsche GT3 :D he has two Ford GT parked on the roof of the building.

- The studio can live in total autarky if need be, in particular in the end of development of the game when the developers spend their time in the Polyphony's building : they have all, they have rooms (to sleep), a kitchen, a room of gym, rooms of relaxation (dvd, consoles, library, magazines), showers, washing machines… They receive also the majority of the automobile reviews published in the world.

- They use infos of the manufacturers to design the cars.

- Their very big server which is in a air-conditioned room, it would be the 4th biggest in Japan. It manages the whole of the data of the games of Polyphony.

- The studio is currently composed of 120 people. Staff get bigger with time, and nobody left the studio, all those which were there for the first GT are always present. Kazunori speaks about a true “family”.

- The guy of Joypad went to Polyphony with a French pilot who run in Super GT in Japan (he drives a Nissan), and who won Formula Nippon this year and which makes also "Les 24 Heures du Mans" (on a Pescarolo). He made a race against Kazunori, and Kazunori won (like against Loeb). Kazunori often invite Japanese pilots of Super GT in Polyphony's building, to make them test Gran Turismo and to have their opinion. The French pilot makes a reproach, for him it's difficult to feel the limit of braking. According to Kazunori, it is a problem involved in the current wheels which are not enough advanced to retranscribe this subtlety. According to the French pilot, GT is the best driving simulator on console.

- The guy of Joypad could test the game on the circuit of Nürburgring, but that it was not finished, it missed parts of the set. -

There are 4 “positions” of driving : two external views, hood view, and internal view.

- Kazunori could drive on the true circuit of Nürburgring last year, and he estimates that after having played his game he could find the same reference marks in reality.

- For Indianapolis… in fact, after having tested the circuit of Nürburgring, the guy of Joypad saw a black screen with incomprehensible Japanese lines, and the only word he could understand was "Indianapolis”. So : Indianapolis in GT5?

- For the next GT which will not be GT5. it would be just a version of GT4 in HD. “all GT4 will be downloadable in HD, but it will be necessary to download the circuits and the cars likely to interest you”. In fact, it's not clear, I wonder even if the journalist understood what Polyphony will do exactly with GT4 HD/GTHD Classic/Premium. GT4 HD would be the GTHD Classic about Polyphony had spoken 6 months ago. There will be in a sort of “GTHD Premium” too, which would be a GT 5 prologue with 2 circuits and about thirty cars, and the real GT5 graphics.

What we learn in the interview:

- I pretty sure the guy of Joypad was received by Kazunori at the same time as the team of Turbo (french TV, they had the interior of 300SL and the information : interior views for every cars of GT5).

- Kazunori says something interesting: about the cars of GT: “some of them are claimed by the manufacturers, but the majority of the vehicles of the game are personal choices”. In fact, the manufacturers must impose models of car (like family cars) because it's a good advertising , and there are maybe even negociations (“you include these small family car and we let you include this top model or this concept car”).

- At the beginning, Polyphony was called “the team Yamauchi”, it was a small division integrated into Sony. They became Polyphony DIGITAL in 1998.

- Yamauchi confirms that they are 120 people today at Polyphony. When they began the development of the first GT in 1992 (!), they were 7 and they spent 5 years to finish the game.

- Yamauchi dreams about creating a Formula 1 game, according to him it would be a game very different from what still exists. Unfortunately, according to him this type of game costs to much money and there are too many stakes with FIA.

- The car he preferred in the GT is the Nissan Skyline GTR. The better car in the game (better graphics and modelisation, and better technichaly) “is without question Nissan 350Z Nismo Super GT”.

- He does not know other games than Gran Turismo, so what he does not admire any other creator of games (by ignorance). The only game he noticed, it is LittleBigPlanet ("different", "original").

- There will be a game between GT4 and GT5 but they do not have a name yet. We will be able to download cars when there are update (he says : "it will be possible to make updates of cars")... And he thinks it will be possible to download cars when there will be new models. (he does not speak about downloading the 750 cars of the game !).

- All the Ferrari range will be present, and they're trying to have Porsche and Lamborgini, but as long as it is not signed he cannot answer positively (let us cross the fingers).

- About new circuits : there will be traditional race circuits (like Nürburgring) + 1 or 2 circuits in town.

- The Drift mode will be very important in GT5. (japanese gamers really like it)

- Astonishing, he says that it will be possible to go online and see the other gamers connected driving and trying to make their best time, we could also be seen by other gamers when we drive (the spectator mode).

- About GTHD demo, he says that Europeans are very strong :)D), he sees very less American people in the classifications of best times…

- There will be always driver's license in the next GT.

- About F1 cars, there is a problem of rights, to make a F1 game you need to pay the FOM (Formula One Managment) and they ask a lot of money. However we will find true F1 in GT5, like old Ferrari F1 or like F1 of manufacturers who still are present in the game (Mercedes, Lotus).

I hope you could understand anything :lol

I remember gt1 taking so long to make but never realised it was so little people, surely there were outside teams helping as the credits were never that short. Still interesting.

bu...but PD employees are leaving and joining MS Japan! They are bored and want to make non racing games!!

That exactly what GTHD was and it was canned. I don't believe the GT4HD thing. I'm sure it's mis-information.
It's like i read a thread from last summer or something.

Hold on, hold on. What about the supposed exodus of Polyphony developers to Microsoft Game Studious Japan? I forgot who hinted about that here - DCharlie? JonnyRam? This isn't meant as the usual bitching at them, but I'd really like to see a clarification on this. :p

EDIT: Oops, didn't see DB brought this up already.

EDIT 2: Oops again, I guess it was jarrod and ****** who brought it up.

Yes, GT4 in 1080p with online and 12-20 players. A with the possibility to download new cars and tracks.

what is seems to me is that there will be GT4:HD that will be downloadable game, that you download in parts for the size limits. You download base game with some cars and tracks and as you complete progress, you download more. That way, you do not have to download 10 GB of data right away. It also seems that they will add more cars, tracks, etc, etc, to GT4:HD, so we dont know how extensive the update will be.

I remember when I played GT4 that I completed like 5% of the game, so thats pretty smart.

And then there will be GT5: Prologue which will have true GT5 graphics and cars, that will come before GT5, since having 30 cars and 2-3 tracks is probably 20% of what they will have overall in GT5, so it should be released sooner. A lot like SOCOM:Confrontation for instance, allows Sony to have more content without wait.

First page:

Three stories down, we enter the most holy place of all holy places with an industrial architecture. We are accompanied by our photographer, our interpreter and our pilot. For this occasion, we asked Benoit Tréluyer, current champion in the Formule Nippon series and Nissan driver in the super GT class and pilot in the 24 hours of Le Mans, to join us on this trip. “This is the first time I’m here with Polophony, it’s a madhouse”, he says while smiling. Polyphony is a studio like no other. Not everything is devoted to making money, but to making the game. There are piles of car magazines, several racks are almost falling because of the weight, maquettes are hiding the desks, without taking the sketches and models into account. A real hymne to the automobile.

Second page:

To remember:
- All the vehicles and circuit from GT4 will be present in the next GT
- It’s possible that additional tracks/cars will be made available for download
- Four different views
- Number of vehicles online: between 12-20
- Changing weather conditions
- New city courses
- All Ferrari cars + F1 cars
- Damage in racecars

The people working in the studio can live completely without any help from the outside. Someone opens the door to a large room: there are music instruments in here, training devices, a library with books, DVD's, newspapers, video gaming consoles are available in the corner as well,… Everything is there so everyone can relax and amuse themselves when taking a break . Most of the time, when a game is almost finished, programmers stay in the studio. This is why there is a kitchen, showers, rooms and even a washing machine! The tour continues. Kazunori opens some drawers, takes out some brochures and explains to us how…

GT HD Classic or Premium

GT4 will be downloadable via the PSN, you will be able to create your own GT. You’ll have to download additional tracks and vehicles if you like them. Price or method of operation are unknown as of now. What GT Premium concerns, it will be some sort of concept game with two circuits and a bit more than thirty vehicles (name is currently unknown). It’s guaranteed that all Ferrari cars will be in this game. No confirmation yet for Porche and Lamborghini.

Destraction

In this part of the studio, it’s possible to relax, play music, watch DVD’s, etc. You can also find a large quantity of magazines here. First floor is dedicated to travelling magazines and the videotheque.

Third page:

There are days where you can’t get out of luck! Before our arrival, it wasn’t foreseen that we would be able to play GT. Still we had a chance to play Nürburgring wit a 350Z GT500 on a 46” full HD screen, all sensations were present. Because GT HD is being developed to be played with a steering wheel, each version is tested with different models to get some comparison statistics. Four screens are connected in the same fashion to show the game in different resolutions (sd, 720p, 1080i, 1080p I guess). It’s here Yamauchi tests GT during the development phase of the game.

Fourth page:

… the modelling takes place starting with the facts sheets from the different constructers. We discover that all characterics of all the cars in the world are here. From the 406 and the Ford GT, to the latest Audi TT, they are all here. It has come to our attention that there’s an impressive glass cage illuminated with blue neons here as well. Kazunori explains: it’s a giant server (it would be the 4th in terms of size in Japan), working 24 hours a day and it handles as some sort of database. Constructers come here to store and access all the necessary data. It’s impossible to access without a pass.” (small anecdote: because of the impressive cooling system here, people use it to cool their wine bottles).

Every piece of the studio is personalised, most of the programmers have their own living space with mostly three to four monitors each on their desk, but also souvenirs they brought with them from past voyages. In total, there are 120 people working here, 120 to make the next GT. None of them have left the team since they started. To the contrary, the team has expanded: computer engineer specialists, graphical designers, game designers,… “This is what makes it possible for us to make a project like GT”, Kaz explains. “The team is like a family here.”

The Challenge

For this occasion, the studion has installed two simulators. Today’s match will be between Yamauchi and Benoit Tréluyer. After some laps, Benoit has found his rhythm, making 1’10. “It really well made”, he says. “You can feel the difference when you place the tires on the marks (bas-côté?). And further visually it’s really impressive." It’s time to race. The two men choose the Ferrari 599 on the GT HD track. Benoit asks the creator some questions. Sometimes, Yamauchi invites Japanese pilotes from the super GT class to test Gran Tourismo, so he really is interested to hear what the French pilot has to say. Indeed, Benoit has trouble feeling the limit when he breaks. Yamauchi explains this is due to the fact that current racing wheels are not evolved enough yet to know such subtle stuff. (it’s mostly in Japanese so it could be some of the dialogue got lost).

Creation

A very important phase, the modelling of each car. Every developer can use the specifications given by the car manufacturer, but also pressphoto's from the model itself. This will be the first time there will be a cockpit view in a GT game, a hard thing to do considering the number of cars in this game.

Shaping things up

Last year, when the studio got the final specifications of the PS3, they realised they had to build all the models and circuits again from the ground up. The power of the machine offers some new possibilities when it comes to details. The guys from Polophony have modeled each vehicle again with the interior. The result: 6 months work for one vehicle.

Page six:

Nürburgring

When everyone is taking a break, I’m using the opportunity to make a small tour. Nobody pays attention to me, so it seems like I’m already blending in quite well. Right in front of Kaz’s desk, there are four screens with a steering wheel. Behind them around ten PS3 development kits and three big pc’s. The first screen is 46” wide, the three others are smaller. I’m told that it is here the big boss tests his GT. There are four screens so he can see everything from the game on TV’s from different manufacturers. “When he has a few minutes to spare, or he want to check a certain element in the game, he makes a ‘tour’, I’m told by an employee. Is that GT that’s running there? The answer is yes and they invite me to take place behing a Nismo Farladie Z on the Nürburgring. Unbelievable, unhoped for… I’m going to play the new GT! Off course, in this stage of development, nothing has been finalised yet. Kazunori tells us that there won’t be two, but four different driving positions to choose from. There will be a cockpit view that will show the dashboard. All the details are here, the Nürburg has been perfectly modiles down to the slightest detail, but the scenery is not finalised yet. Last year Kazunori has had the occasion to ride the real Nürburgring. He said that, after playing it on screen, he could find every detail as it was from the real track. Maybe that is the reason they are showing this 22km long track first to promote their full hd? The next GT will actually be GT4 in full HD with 750 cars, about 50 tracks. Two versions will be available, Classic and Premium. Some features are online garage, carrière mode, challenges, one versus one, also a chat feature, equipment for each model, an online spectator mode, etc. Everyone can create their own GT according to their taste. It appears that these online features in GT HD bis will serve as a platform were the real GT5 will be build upon. There are also some balancing stuff build in to make the cars behave and react more realistically. At the dinner later, an employee shows a slideshow on a screen. It’s all Japanese so impossible to understand but they can read the word Indianapolis. One of the most famous circuits in the next GT? We still don’t know for sure…

Have you played GTHD? If so what's your impression about it?

unfortunately so far only 15 minutes in a demo station. some things have changed. cars seem to be a lit more out of control compared to GT4. turning ASM or TCS to only one won't automatically kill all your power, that's a good improvment. also, braking distances seem way bigger than in GT4, but that might be because of the cars i've tried. (599GTB, couple of celicas and skylines...).

about the article... i was really expecting a GT5 prologue. i still don't think that GT4HD idea a good thing. just give us GT5 prologue and allow us to give feedback for a perfect GT5 in x-mas of 2008

Who said they aren't? GT4 if you had read earlier was done with PS3 in mind. The HD models are already there on that beast of a server. Putting them on PS3 with various tweaks will not be a problem. Also they have more car data than any gaming company out there.

This does makes sense to me but I wouldn't call them HD models.

If I were to work on a Racing Game I would aim to use patch surfaces instead of triangles on the vehicles. You don't need skinning on a vehicle and you don't need to animate it except in fully separated pieces.

It saves on memory and on rendering time to use patches instead of triangles and if you are doing that everything is perfect and you could potentially go down to triangles if you needed to on a specific platform (PSP/PS2? even though they have support for patch surfaces).

(and by perfect I mean that you could use the original models from the vehicle manufacturers and not need to modify them too much at all)

I translated the first part of the interview... Forgive me, my English automatically goes down 20 points when I translate lol.

Where does your passion for cars come from?
Like every boy, I started getting interested in cars at the age of 3-4 years old.
Years later, when the occasion presented itself to make a video game, I had already prepared 150 projects, Gran Turismo being directly linked to my passion for cars. It may not be the Gran Turismo that we know and love today, but I knew what I wanted: a real driving simulator with real cars.

At present day, you’ve vastly explored this idea, what aspects of it inspire you?
Lots of things! But certainly there is no end to this story. We’ve created a game that evolved from circuits to rallies by passing by some normal roads and today with GT HD, we have introduced to you the drift aspect of the game. But there are still lots of fine tuning and lots of work to do. Nothing is ever really completely finished! But the passion that animates my team is a real engine for itself.

You’ve arrived in a Porsche GT3, we’ve also seen a Ford GT… What are the cars you own and which one is your favorite?
I have six cars. 2 Ford GT, a Porsche GT3 that you’ve seen but also a Mercedes SL55, a Nissan 350z Nizmo and a Honda S2000. My favorite one is definitely the Ford GT, since it goes back to the day I was born.

Which car do you dream of owning some day?
Without a doubt, a McLaren F1. I’ve never been in one, it’s a dream to be able to drive it someday.

Where does the name Gran Turismo come from and how did you choose the cars that are in the game?

Gran Turismo is originally an Italian name. The type of car that lets you “travel” since they are cars of grand tourism. We’ve reintroduced this philosophy in the game, since with Gran Turismo, the player travels inside beautiful cars! A couple of them are reclaimed by the manufacturers, but most of the vehicles in the game are personal choices.

How was Polyphony created?
At first, it was a division called “Team Yamauchi” that was integrated in Sony. In 1998, this division became independent under the name Polyphony Digital.

How many people work by your side?
Today, we are 120 in total. In 1992, when I started making the first Gran Turismo, we were seven and it took us 5 years to finalize the game.

You were not programmers though, what’s your professional background?

I started by studying economics while making games for fun. I was 18, it was a hobby. Since I was a kid, I used to play a very well known PC game called Grand Prix. I then arrived at Sony in the music department of Epic Sony Record, to then migrate to the domain of games.

Grand Prix was a single-seater game. Why haven’t you created a soft of Formula 1 instead?

But I’ve always wanted to! However, the development of those types of games cost too much because there is a huge amount of interest. What is certain is that if I had that chance, I’d do something really different than the things that exist today.

Did you ever expect the Gran Turismo series to be such a big success?
Not at all! The driving games before Gran Turismo were very different. Even if you don’t brake, you can still successfully pass a turn. When the driving sensations of the players reappeared in Gran Turismo, they were a lot more enthusiastic of the fact that when you brake before a turn, you have to position the car and reaccelerate, so it was something new. In fact, I was sure that there were other people who, like me, wished to have this type of sensation. But not this much!

Do you know that most of the Europeans discovered that the cars that run in JGTC (Japan Grand Touring Car Championship) (now called Super GT) is all thanks to this game? The Nissan Skyline comes to mind that was never imported over here…
Yes, and the funny thing is that some of them that have played GT have contacted the teams of Super GT! This series is very interesting and very competitive even if it takes place only in Japan. Never the less, I am happy to have participated in its image through my game.

Specifically , have you ever had any collaboration with the Super GT team and do you call real drivers to test Gran Tusimo?

It happens quite frequently. They come in the studio and I go see the races. For me, it is important to have the opinions of a real driver.

What is your favorite car in all of GT and which one is the most polished one technically and graphically in your opinion?

My favorite goes to the Skyline GTR and the most polished one is, no contest, the Nissan 350Z Nismo of Super GT.

Who are the other game creators you admire?

Hard to say since I never look at other games unless it’s for technical reasons. But if I had to say, the only one that struck my eye was Little Big Planet because the developers have really succeeded in doing something different, something original. Otherwise, I don’t admire anybody in particular… but due to my ignorance.

To speak a bit about the future, what online possibilities are we going to see in GT HD Concept?
First of all, the name is still to be determined. At this moment, I can confirm that there’s going to be a game that’s going to come out between GT4 and GT5, but we do not have a name yet. Regarding the online, it’s a really broad question…

Can we hope for any downloadable cars and tracks via the PlayStation Store?
Nothing is certain yet, but it’ll be possible to get new updates for the cars. You can surely expect to be able to download when new stuff is available.

In GT4, one of the new features was the hood driving view, plus the two old classic ones, what can we expect for the next installment?
In the next Gran Turismo, the hood driving view will return but also a new interior driving view.

You signed a deal with Ferrari, will we see all the Ferrari cars in the game? Can we still hope to see more manufacturers such as Porsche or Lamborghini?
All the series of Ferrari cars will be available, but in regards to Porsche and Lamborghini, until we’ve signed with them, I cannot answer positively.

In regards to the tracks, what’s new?
I’ve got loads of ideas! So expect a number of surprises! However, I can already announce that there are going to be the classic circuits but also new city tracks…

A name?
(laughs) Not yet!

Deaf people shouldn't comment on sound just like blind people should refrain from commenting on graphics.

They'll just end up making them self look dumb.

GT has gone through many sound enhancements and much wider sound array for engine sounds.
One should be much more worried about DVD based racing titles trying to compete with GT in the amount of cars, the sound bit-rate is clearly the first thing they'll cut to save space.

I agree - at best DVD-based racers can look forward to horribly compressed 5.1 DD audio.

I hope PD implements 7.1 PCM for GT5's audio - should be plenty of room on a 50GB BRD for it.

I'm surprised that the interview appears to make no mention of all the rumours that GT5 will have persistant tracks/arenas and more of a community aspect.

Thought that would have been something they'd have wanted to talk up.

This is what I'm talking about right here. Do it, Kaz. For all the bitches moaning about damage, give them REAL damage. It doesn't have to manifest itself externally on the car, but show people the real consequences of leaving the driving line. Show people like Fight For Freedom that you have a choice to play the game like an asshole, or realistically. There's nothing arcadey about GT's gameplay, it's the people who choose to play it like bumpercars that are the problem. The game is a driving simulator, and the reward is in proper driving. A 30+ mph impact should end your race in any production car. For racing cars, you can probably double that. Ha! Then people will complain that the game is unfair.

That's the issue here...when it comes to RACING, you are rewarded when you bump other cars.

It's not so much having to do with damage per se, but rather penalizing those who play it that way.

I've played a lot of multiplayer GT3...and it always got to the point where it did turn into a game of bumper cars.

This is my main complaint about PGR3, where hitting a guy penalizes the guy who got hit as it spins them out, rewarding the guy who hit him with an easy pass.

I'm looking at this from a multiplayer POV.

People don't want realism. They want some arbitrary handicap b/c they can't restrain themselves from cheating. But give them realism, and they'll pull their hair out in frustration. Why do most people skip going for golds on the license tests? They challenge you the most on driving skill, and even small cockups can result in failing the test. Isn't that realistic? Or is that too realistic?

It should be an option, just like getting Gold in license tests. Most people I know don't even bother going for Gold...but I love it. Which brings me back to my other point...GT is a great single player driving game...it may do well with no opponents at all. I think a lot of enthusiasts would love realistic damage as well.

Car manufacturers have been against it...but slowly things are changing. With Forza 1, a bumper could not fall off because some manufacturers didn't want that. So in the game it was represented by being cracked and hanging off, but not falling off. In FM2, they completely fall off. Actually in one interview it was mentioned that it was hard for the FM guys to get all the damage they wanted because car manufacturers weren't that familiar with FM to begin with. GT doesn't have that issue...everyone knows it and it's one of the best selling modern day games. So I'm hoping PD can get permission for a whole lot more realism in terms of damage.

Bah, I don't care about cosmetic damage. I don't care much about AI. Give me a good driving model, and give me online. That's all I'll need. PEACE.

Well...if it's going to feature other cars sharing the track with me, I want to RACE, meaning better AI and penalties for hitting other cars. If it is going to be a time trial game like GT:HD (obviously not going to be the case, but hypothetically), I'm fine with that.

That looks oO wierd.

Imo its some kinda of hack for GT4, the way the camera moved it seemed it was more like a 3rd person view with the camera distance altered through hacking.

WTF? GT:HD in-car video?

This looks like a mish-mash of placeholder graphics, but there can't be any mistake. That is Midfield, and that is an in-car view. Those are the same cheesy sound effects. Props to GTAce at E-mpire. Not sure where he got this from, though. PEACE.

Looks like some GT4 mod. Like a camera (with really ****ing bad movement) was put in some GT4 cockpit. (parts of the interior of cars are modelled already in GT4 anyways)

So, any chance this is GT4? I'm still thrown by the presence of Midfield and what appear to be placeholders. I'm probably really reaching on that, though. Still, it seems odd. That swinging camera is garbage indeed. It would at least make a little sense if it was aligned with the driver's helmet. PEACE.

That looks fake. Like some kind of hack to put the camera lower, inside the car.

Also, why would they centralize it ? Put the camera where the driver's head is...not in between the seats.

I hope PD would never do such cockpit. Not only this fake camera is misplaced but the banking is extremely annoying and should be in the direction of the turn if you're "a driver head camera".

Well, it looks like its trying to give you sensation of lateral Gs, it is also looking the direction you are turning.

Thanks for the translations of the interviews, lots of interesting information.

Hopefully with GT4 HD it won't be too expensive if you want all the cars as I'm definitely a completionist when it comes to that sort of thing.
