Guy fails Mario speed run in front of Miyamoto

The original video looks like it was done on a real NES.

Yeah I take that back, looking at the video it seems he actually did pretty well, besides buckling under the pressure.

Aw, he was so nervous. :lol It appears he was drying his sweaty hands on his shirt. ĂĽ

But this discussion is now about the cake that is not a lie and LOOKS GLORIOUS.

How creeped out does Miyamoto look when the guy starts spazzing at him after beating world 1-1. He's like a puppy dog. I understand I guess but it's still hilarious.

Poor guy though. :/

Something is up at the nintendo world store playthrough. unless i'm not aware of a glitch or something in SMB.

In world 4-2 he takes the third pipe down (seen at the kotaku page at 2:22 - http://kotaku.com/5683873/gamer-fails-super-mario-bros-speed-run-while-mario-creator-watches )

That pipe takes him underground with coins.

Looking at his YouTube speedrun, in world 4-2 at about 2:06 that same pipe takes him to the mushroom platforms as if he took the vine up.

So early on he already experienced something I don't think he expected and I personally don't know why they are different -- i couldn't find anything on glitches that would do that. at least not easily and it's too late to be thorough.

It's related to how room transitions work in the game. The idea is that you have two exit points present on the screen (vine + pipe) but only one global variable that points to the next area to be loaded. There's a way you can utilize this to get the pipe to lead to the warp area.

got it, so then he failed triggering this and that screwed everything up.

thanks. learn something new.

In hindsight, that anomaly at E3 was probably something else, since all the other demo stations worked just fine. Probably wasn't calibrated before they went to the stage.

yep, it was caused by the distance more than by the interferences.

Poor guy, pressure must have been insane. Especially on a different (wireless) controller and LCD TV, odds were stacked against him.

Original video though is a thing of beauty, must have been about 10 times I though he'd fucked up a tube jump and got it every time, and that last Bowser jump :lol Is 5:00 the world record then?

I feel bad for him, that must have been a major downer. But at least he got to play the game with Miyamoto there, so at least it worked out there in the end. I'm pretty sure most gamers would have probably been nervous as sin in that situation, so it's great of him for at least trying. :D

the ass tried to show off "omg it has teh bugs! i shall axploiT!"

there you go, for using the tube and not the vine

(he used the same flaw used to enter the -1 world, except that when you do it on that spot, with the vine trick, you get to the 4-1 warp skyworld)

so, protip: when you're showing off, and you have the skill, take 10 fucking seconds to get the god damn flower power, should have made it way easier, it's just that he wanted to show off "omg i can with no mushrooms"

Can somebody elaborate on that a bit? I'm not sure I get it. That was the first time I see that pipe leading to the warp area.

I'm no expert, but i'm gonna say there is a variable NextZone, containing the next zone to be loaded

so

NextZone = pipeplace

by default. But the vine pops up and overwrites nexztzone = vineplace.

so even when you take the pipe, NextZone has already been changed to vineplace and you go there instead of pipeplace

seriously just guessing...never heard of this glitch before

Looks like a perfectly normal kid to me.
Yes, he does look normal. However, we at GAF engage in equal opportunity mockery. The kid's awkward expression in this image makes me laugh, and it should be obvious why.

Edit: Just to be clear, I should add that I think he put on an impressive show under pressure. There's no knocking his skills.

And damn, Daigo is a stone cold motherfucker.

Regarding the speedrun, you can't really blame him with the crowd behind him and fuckin' God himself watching him play. On a related note, did Steve Weibe ever topple Billy Mitchell's score at CES was it?
