GVMERS: Ubisoft's Worst Mistake - The Tragedy of Star Wars Outlaws

Ubisoft needed a win. In fact, after years of burning through cash on canceled projects and repeatedly delayed games that failed to meet sales expectations, Ubisoft needed multiple wins. C-suite executives and analysts, at one time, predicted Star Wars Outlaws would provide the family-owned French publisher with a shot at financial recovery. It, too, fell well below commercial expectations, despite heralding the next epoch of Star Wars games.

For nigh on one decade, Electronic Arts exclusively held the rights to develop and publish Star Wars-branded interactive media. Two Battlefront revivals spawned from the multi-year agreement, alongside Respawn Entertainment's Star Wars Jedi series, and EA Motive's dogfighting adventure Star Wars Squadrons. These releases enjoyed varying degrees of success; however, general consensus ultimately labeled the EA era disappointing at best and an abject failure at worst. The 2021 announcement of Outlaws, then, generated much excitement, though the anticipation waned as the release date drew near.

Not even the fun of fulfilling brand-specific space and scoundrel fantasies could distract from the open-world title's various flaws. Middling review scores and insufficient sales made matters worse, complicating Ubisoft's highly publicized financial struggles. Again, the Assassin's Creed maker needed a win; after hedging its bets on spacefaring rogues, the publisher felt compelled to bank on outside help for its continued survival.

This is the tragedy of Star Wars Outlaws.

A character creator would've fixed so so many complains. But the game isnt bad, the world looks good. The problem is Ubisoft being Ubisoft here again

ubisoft could make a 10/10 game like BGE2 and i still won't buy it

yes BGE2 is 10/10 before it comes out idc

I thought the map was shit. Got to one level and fucking drowned in a swamp trying to get to an objective marker as the map never mentioned it / referred to it.

Yeah, level design was meh, storyline was meh, writing was … meh. The uglified MC aside, the game overall was middling.

Don't push it. It's ok at best, with lots of bugs on launch period, and you have to ignore how they fucked up the actress face

The game is okay now, the planets are good, space travel is nice, the syndicate system is interesting. A sold 8/10 for me

I liked this game a lot. more so than any other modern ubisoft game (be it valhalla, odyssey or shadows). there are a lot of unique locations and progression is really organic, the character just improves by gaining new abilities and then by improving those abilities in a specific way instead of gaining random stats. that alone made the game a lot of fun for me

i also think kay is not ugly and actually pretty in a unique way. at least in my game anyways

these interactive cutscene minigames alone tell me that this was a game made with passion. it is really sad that people think this game is not different than some random open world assassin's creed game

and of course most of the locations have incredible ambiance

All open world Ubisoft games have a "good atmosphere" honestly, if we're just talking about the environment. It's very rare they don't. Every map in the latest Ghost Recon, Assassin's Creed, Watch Dogs, Far Cry/Avatar have a lot going on.

That doesn't mean the games are good.

Here i heard they removed "forced" stealth entirely post launch, it's pretty telling how messy those games are when it comes to design.

I didn't play it but i'm willing to bet it's like their other latest releases, pretty much the same than before but worse.

Never played it but watched the video linked and it seems like it has some good ideas.
It's bizarre to me that a custom character creator wasn't implemented. Seems like it could have drawn more people in.

Seeing publishers release a Standard Edition, Digital Deluxe Edition, Gold Edition, Collectors Physical Edition, Ultimate Edition etc just guarantees I'll wait 18+ months.

I played through it but had to force myself.

- I didn't like the stealth ( I don't like stealth in general in games and that's this games main aspect)

- after you get off the first planet the games is sparse and feels unfinished.

- lots of girl boss / I like girls bs everyone was tired of at the time.

I raise my hand... and say it... I was going to buy it on day one.

🙋

But I didn't...

1. You can't steal.
2. You can't kill people.
3. You can't run people over.
4. You can't cause chaos in a city.
5. The game isn't complete on the physical disc... It's like keycard garbage.

With that and the character design... they made me turn off the game. There's the consequence.

I had a few hours in when it first came out. Lost interest. Keep thinking I should restart.

I actually played through it last month including all the DLC stuff, I really enjoyed it. Sound design and atmosphere is off the charts in it, not to mention the game is just absolutely gorgeous maxed out on PC.

I had just played Jedi Survivor when this launched and I was kinda burned out, even though I loved Survivor (terrible PC optimization). This just looked like a worse version with an ugly main character and Ubislop quests.

Character creator is too DEI for me, gimme standard character regardless of gender, looks, whatever.

I tried to play it again, and it just don't work. While i was playing it, i was thinking i just could play Jedi survivar again and have more fun with it.

Ahm what? Where the heck is a Char creator DEI? Please explain this a Gen X gamer.
Not every game is about "you", sometimes it's about a determined character. That's why you cannot choose how Mario, Samus, Snake, Sonic, Kratos, or others look. For these games I like a good, solid story built around a character which might open a new series about such character more than having a template where others cannot pronounce your name in dialogs.

I get this *you* thing i dont get what the creator has to do with DEI stuff

I will get to play it right after feudal japan black samurai simulator, any day now, ubi u can already put those sales into ur next quarterly profits :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Played through it recently and it's pretty good. Maybe it was a disaster at launch and had a terrible first impression but now it was a solid adventure. Captured the classic Star Wars feel of the OG trilogy while also paving the way for some new stuff. The exploration was great with lots of fun stuff you could do on the different planets. It also had a lovable cast of Npcs that enriched the story. And the game was sure a looker. Very beautiful at times. The biggest flaw however is Kay Vess, there is no way around it. I don't really care how she looks, but she is not believable in the slightest as a scoundrel. Ubi should've gone with a male character here, it would fit the world and the story much better. Total casting misfire.

I didn't play it, but I saw clips of a 110 pound woman bare knuckle boxing stormtroopers and KO-ing them with one uppercut to their helmets. Disqualifying.

I enjoyed it quite a bit especially zooming about and the space stuff too.

But you know, ppl complain about everything these days. The game was a 6.5 for me, which on a discount is pretty decent.
