After looking at this around the internet, I found something interesting.

On reddit, this game was upvoted more than any gaming post I've ever seen, even with "VR" in the title.

The announcement trailer on youtube has millions of views, again, overwhelmingly "liked" vs "disliked"

Almost every video I've seen about mirrors this actually.

However, its only when you sniff through vid and forum comments that the vocal minority voice screams louder than the majority.

And based on the votes, the majority seem excited, even the ones who don't own VR. We all know gamers are quick to downvote and dislike things they don't agree with, and this doesn't seem to be the case, surprisingly.

Maybe I'm off base somewhere.

I mean that's kind of typical. The vast majority of players love Call of Duty Modern Warfare reboot, but if you go on Reddit there will be a bunch of people that are constantly complaining (I agree with them though lol).

I don't own VR, but I am absolutely stoked and happy to see Valve embracing Half Life again. I'm ready for it. Even if it means I have to wait years before I experience it, I'm just glad it's happening. Alyx is also a beloved character. She deserves it.

The difference is the COD fanbase is absolutely massive compared to VR. It would be like an exclusive Switch sequel to COD. Lol

your mind
I think that's a misrepresentation, some of the Campo Santo people are working on it, but I bet when you see credits they'll be a small part of that list.
Maybe. I heard that they are involved in writing the game story/dialogue, which is enough in my mind to affect the end product. We’ll see.

I dunno. I think the half life fan base was finally becoming more at peace with the fact that Half Life was never going to get a new game. This is just a pleasant surprise.

Maybe that's some of it, I just expected more negativity from a PC game with deep roots going exclusive to VR.

IMO, i'm happy for VR to stay Niche enough that it doesn't attract the vultures like EA, Acti et al. They can keep draining the whales in COD, Battlefield etc.

I want VR to be what gaming used to be; passion projects born out of a love for the art and medium.

If VR does go more mainstream, it will be down to Sony to make it happen. If they can release a powerful PSVR2, backed up by a very powerful console, then I can see it selling like hotcakes.

I've not known anyone to try VR and not be blown away by it, but I know plenty of 'gamers' who haven't even tried it, Which is strange.

Another thing I like is less assholes in multiplayer games. Most of the time there is a good sense of camaraderie. 4 years ago I saw nothing but people all being blown away with VR online, as more people get into VR the more anti social players and griefers trickle in. I am enjoying it while it's in its infancy.

Too true my man. I remember CS:S had a great community and sense of fair play. We were on a British private server but everyone acted with decency and respect.

Gears 1 had the odd tosser but they were so rare that it was a nice novelty.

For the past 5+ years though, multiplayer has been nothing but bad manners, bad teammates, blasting rap on open mics, quitting, whining, just the worst. Popularity ruins everything.

Agreed. When half life 2 came out many people couldn't play it and had to upgrade their computers. It was also considered gated off back then due to the lofty requirements. It felt like a real advancement in technology. This new game seems to be continuing in those footsteps.

I just really want to see how they step up the usual VR shooting gallery.

I'm just playing through Half Life 2 on steam again after god knows how long.

I honestly forgot how good this game actually is. It stomps 95% of todays fps.

It's one of those rare games that if you would rate it even by todays standards it would legit get the same score because everything holds up so well.

Sorry for kinda OT but I am just in awe right now. I strongly reccommend to anyone who hasn't played it in a while to revisit it to remind yourself.

Could be I guess, since most of Valve's writers left lol

Cancun, Mexico.
Tell me what dekstop games you are physically controlling your arm having to manually move objects with your hand to find something. Not pressign a button, but you are using your mouse to atually control your hand and your fingers.
Jurassic Park Trespasser. It was not good at all. A game way ahead of its time. A VR game before VR.

I might be thinking naively but if it's got that many likes then it will really help get more people into VR.

The cynical in me thinks a lot of people haven't realized it's a VR game yet and will riot when they find out.

I have it on steam but I just started my save on the original xbox. The atmosphere is incredible, and the physics for such an old game are better than 90% of the stuff out there today.

I like playing it on that hardware because its just that much more of an impressive feat.

I am sure, I am in! Will built a new PC ( don’t owe one) and also complete VR Gear.

Once again, Valve got me on my balls.

The Penumbra series. The door example in Geoff's interview is in there too.
It's cumbersome but kind of neat.

Shows how disconnected I am that I only notice this today lol

Looks dope, looking very much forward to it. My PC is good enough for it, my WMR headset is primed and ready, bring it on! March 2020* can't come soon enough :)

* valve time, so really could be any point within the next 5 years

I currently have a WMR headset that I bought new a year ago for $200, but I'm gonna probably upgrade to a Valve Index before this game releases, since I'm already sold on VR, and I have a library of VR games on Steam already (And Oculus using ReVive).

This and Boneworks look really good.

Some people pointed out that the "L" in "Alyx" is a Lambda, but I just noticed that the "X" is drawn like a Feynman diagram

It's a graphical representation of different processes that contribute to probability amplitudes in perturbative quantum field theory

No you are not crazy. The loud minorities have taken over almost everything fun lately and turned it into a socio/political argument.

"Half Life Alyx discriminates against poor people that can't afford VRRRREEEEEEEE"

I mean it's good but it's not that good.
I have seen a lot of people say they are interested in VR but does not have that game they want to push them over the edge. Maybe HL Alyx is that.

I sure hope so because VR has been pretty stale for a while by the looks of things.

How you figure? the market has constant growth. Just because its not blown up does not mean there isn't a market for it.

There has been some great headsets released this year, some big games came out this year, from my POV I can see VR getting bigger and more popular all the time.

You should talk to the people making it as they're in a bit of a panic.
They all know the potential (as does anyone who uses VR) but no one has been able to come up with a killer app yet and that's quite worrying. The VR people are literally throwing VR kits at companies and individuals with no real luck.
This is compounded by the motion sickness problem which has still not been overcome --If you're body gets one whiff of motion sickness then you're likely not to go to VR as your experience of choice -- even if you bring it out at parties.

Who's in a panic? The Reddit community isn't and thats the biggest VR community I am part of. Most of the "panic" is from people who don't use VR.

Reddit is full of posts with people getting blown away or asking what VR headset to get. I think most people who use VR know it has problems but its very easy to see potential and are hungry for more.

Reminder that Windows Mixed Reality is half off for Black Friday being only $230. For those that want to play HLA for cheap this is it.

Try out Half-Life 2 Update, it's a mod that improves the visuals while not compromising the style of the original game
