The thing is the kind of talented folks that made awesome stuff like that now can just make it all as indie games on a multitude of freely available competent engine and easily publish it for sale, it's not the lack of modable games that have caused less awesome mods to come out, it's the ease of making and selling games. I'm sure we'll still see lots of awesome fan projects, just not on the level of the Doom, HL2, HL2 or even UT2004 days.
we'll see, it's up to them to push this stuff through the community portals, what the new engine is like, the tools, so forth

i think we'll probably see various grants handed out and deals made to subsidize hardware for lower income developers

I will pick this up in a few years when VR screens don't look like shit and are affordable. I like VR, played at a friend's house, but man seeing pixels really ain't my thing and I think the tech is just not there yet.

Sad this is a VR only game.,but hopefully it will push valve to make more HL games in the future!!
Which VR head set does he have? The "screen door effect" isn't anywhere near as bad as what it used to be.

Oculus Go! What do you mean it's not the same, it's all VR!

Lol "I tried VR and it sucks" is much like "I tried PC, it sucks", no hardware or software info as if there's no variety and differentiation that can alter the experience!

Gimme a few minutes to google "best VR" so I can add that info to be more legit in muh opinanz.

lol, that just looks like HL in VR
I know that's a stupid sounding thing to say, but it's exactly what in my mind I imagine a HL2 solo thing in VR would look like, all the familiar images with a bunch leaning, enviromental interaction and floating hands, it's apathy inducing
but hey atleast it's a full game, as opposed to a short game ala Portal 1, honestly had that low a bar for current_day Valve
VR gets some people really angry for some reason.
VR also really brings the bugman out of the stans for some reason
I can handle salt, but them? jesus

Neither of these two titles out this last month or so are interesting to you?

Stormland looks decent, but the gameplay and animations in AW looks very weak to me. I'm optimistic that VR will keep progressing, but at the moment it is still below the line of quality I'm willing to accept in order to buy in.

He has the release Occulus. Heard the VIVE pro has a upgraded screen etc but that's way out my price range. Once that quality level reaches price points of 400, I think that will be the moment VR will start to take off. As long as you need like 1.3k for the whole headset, controller setup like the steam headset, it's just a proof of concept to me just like RTX is rn.

What a big fuck you to all the Half Life fans out there....

Let's analyse this situation. So 2 years ago, many big companies, including Valve thought that VR is the next big shit (despite VR being around for decades, albeit with less graphical fidelity). Lot's of big companies threw billions into this new technology.

Pretty soon, however, it became evident that VR is NOT the next big thing. Actually most people didn't give a shit. The big companies tried everything. Shilling the hell out of VR on the internet (even on OLD Gaf), producing new games for example, yet it all turned out to be a typical dreamcast situation: VR sells bad because nobody gives a shit > developers are reserved to release games for it and are waiting until it sells better and install base gets bigger > VR install base doesn't grow because there are no good games for it > developers get more reluctant to commit > VR base still doesn't grow because of no games, and so on.

This situation has been going on for 2 or 3 years. It should be evident that VR is a failure, yet companies like Valve undertake ridiculous messures to turn VR around. I mean, they have to, right? They spent so much money on a technology that wasn't the next coming of jesus.

Seeing Valve use Half Life as one of those desperate messures is pretty upsetting. Many years fans have been asking for a new entry, and only now they are bringing it to life, but only because they were so gullible to fall for the VR-meme, not because they thought developing a next entry of Half Life (one of the most successfull FPS of all time) would make SENSE.
Imagine having a head this full of spaghetti. I bought an Index like two days after trying like the lowest tier, PSVR. Everyone that’s tried out Index at my house either has gone on to get an HMD or is planning on it. My brother saw the HL: Alyx trailer today and said he’s probably ready to go for it after mulling it over for months.

I feel like the salty anti-VR folk exist in a world where nobody enjoys things that the salty few find imperfect. Imagine Valve pushing forward into new tech with one of their franchises just like...they’ve always done! The horror! Everyone I know IRL is hype as fuck for this new game, and is either happy they already got a HMD or are saying they’re now shopping for one.

I love half life but unless this gets non stop 10’s I’ll be skipping it. This isn’t steam. You can’t force everyone to buy VR kit just because you put half life on it Valve. I make 100k+ a year and I still wouldn’t buy VR currently. It’s just not a good gaming investment with the current and future slate of software.

holy fucking shit

i literally was in disbelief at that first shot of shot of city 17 (city 17? another city, i dunno) and g-man showing up at the end gave me crazy chills

fuck that looks so good.

To me it does look like something you would see attached to the end of a Half-Life 2: Episode 3 trailer.

It's good to see some life in the legendary IP again.

This reminds me how I was waiting for RE7 pc vr support to jump in. Shit STILL isn't out. But this is just as motivating. I assume the index is the best VR headset around?

I hope I could finally open this fucker's suitcase and piss in it. These "mysteries", dragged through five games and 20 years and you still nowhere near a logical explanation... just rekts the whole experience.

I'm in the camp that thinks it looks cool but all the shit surrounding VR is just too expensive for me right now. Plus RTX cards just aren't worth it to me.

Alyx only requires a 1060 level GPU, what RTX?

No shit surrounding VR and you can get an ok set for less than $200 in the USA (any WMR, hopefully a formerly premium model now discounted like Samsung Odyssey+ if you go that route), around $350 for a real solid one (Oculus Rift S Black Friday) and $1000+ for premium stuff like Index.

The one thing that needs looking up more than this basic info is your IPD range cos some sets (anything non-Index non-Odyssey) don't have hardware IPD switch and the compatible range is smaller when only software does the correction.

And yeah there are a couple other choices to consider depending on particular niche circumstances like Pimax for high res high fov or various older used kits like Rift CV1 but if you don't wanna bother and just wanna game that's all the info you need.

I've got a PSVR, but I'm guessing this won't make it to that platform, at least not w/out a big downgrade. Maybe PSVR2 on PS5 is a more likely target.

I've been meaning to get a PC VR headset, but with the launch of the PS5 only a year away, I'm guessing Sony will reveal their plans / specs for PSVR2 at some point within the next year. It'll be interesting to decide between PSVR2 and PC VR. (Not holding my breath for PSVR2 at PS5 launch, though.)

PSVR2's VR exclusives are gonna be mindblowing. And salt inducing.
At the very least Insomniac will take all the lessons they learned in Stormland and make something super fucking cool for Sony. I'm gonna be super jelly.

lol, for real man, we know next to nothing about this son of a bitch. But he’s always around when shits hitting the fan just casually walking by like some kind of asshole

Still surreal that I’m talking about a new half life game right now.

I’m gonna laugh when this game explains nothing though and we don’t hear anything else about half-life for another 12 years

You should all be mourning, not rejoicing.

The team that created the games that we love, the very reason a trailer like this is exciting, is gone. It doesn't exist. The writers, the level designers.

They should have either made it when Valve was Valve, or just let the franchise sail off into the great unknown, as is the nature of the very narrative.

You'll be sorry.

It's all about the score and Valve's score is 100%. Other companies, like Blizzard and Bioware, lost teams and outsourced and ended up putting out offensively low quality products comparitively and have lost many points, going from having A+ down to Cs and Fs.

Well I can't tell you how much I'd love to be wrong. If they still have the sorcery, I'm all for it.

But I cannot explain what it was like to experience Half-Life 2 for the first time. There was truly nothing like it. It changed everything. If they change everything again with this I'll happily eat crow.

I'd like to know specifically who's gone that you're talking about. I saw a post on era that contradicted yours.

And the level design of hl2 was good, but questionable in many places.

I don't understand how people are so down on VR. To me, VR is the next frontier for innovative first person experiences, especially shooters.
There are vocal minority VR owners out there that don't like it, but in the real world i've never meet one, much less anyone who wasn't blown away by a demo of VR after hundreds of examples. Not a single person wasn't wowed in my experience. That's out of probably near 400-420 demos. Even the ones that got a little sick were still impressed.
But then I go on forums and suddenly theres this alien world of people were VR is meh somehow.

This looks fucking sick

It gives me horrible nausea for one. If it’s the future of gaming eventually I’ll have to quit. I can only last like 20 minutes usually.

I have a GTX 1060 6GB, however I'm not interested in playing it with minimum specs. I'll wait until the next generation of nvidia cards are out and headsets are a bit cheaper.

Too true. I guess some of those people want to see AAA games, but honestly the actual game feel is just incomparable to non VR gaming.
I don't imagine every type of game will translate well to VR, but I can't see first person titles progressing any further without exploring VR. I'm looking forward to when engineers and devs finally achieve wireless and haptic solutions for future iterations of consumer VR.

Well I understand that there are people such as yourself that physically can't get into VR, even if you wanted to :messenger_grinning_sweat:

I was speaking more to those that express the sentiment that VR is a passing fad or trend.

I'm really interested in Asgard's Wrath, but I also don't want to hook my Oculus back up... I'll probably check it out eventually.

I don't see "but they want to make money" as any kind of argument against "they're passionate about half-life vr" like you used it and yes it's vr that got them excited about game development again, that's also a good thing for people who like vr games, not bad. Every time someone presents something as exciting you go but but but they just wanna make money, no shit, everyone does, saying someone is excited to work on this or that doesn't also say "no they don't want money" so responding with "but they want money for it" is silly, that was never up for debate, it has a price tag. You don't go around stating that in every other game's thread that people have a positive impression about its announcement so no I don't have to guess that you wouldn't do that if it wasn't a vr half-life either, you're already not doing it for the vast majority of games, just any you wanna put down.
Didn't I already tell you to work with what is versus what isn't?

I haven't once mentioned money. Valve has plenty of money from Steam. It's whats sustained them over the years., and why in large part the game development side of the firm has stagnated because financially they haven't been hungry enough to pursue or maintain projects (unlike other development studios, that regularly refresh their games for a new audience).

This whole exercise is fuelled by a desire to grow the VR user base. They say as much in the Keightley Interview. They're passionate about VR. I get that, it's an exciting tech (as I outlined before) this, however, being a new Half-Life game though has nothing really to do with giving long term fans of the series what they want (an actual conclusion to the events after episode 2) versus being the best choice of the current IPs they possess to showcase their ideas (CS, TF2, L4D being disregarded) and much less work to implement than coming up with something truly original.

"Why VR only?"
"We wanted to push VR."

"Why not Half Life 3?"
"Half Life 3 is too scary to touch at this point."

"Will there be a Half Life 3 now?"
"We can't confirm any future Half Life content without seeing how successful this is."

So what too scared to make a HL3 but they suddenly grow a spine when they want to sell their hardware?

The engine and tech are impressive. And, the HL universe always gives me chills, the trailer did for sure. Although, I wished they made a more traditional experience that made people fall in love with the HL series. I’m not a big fan of VR, but this game could be a game changer for the VR market. Furthermore, the SE2 looks insane.

IIRC Gabe has said, along with HL PC fans supporting his words, that he/Valve, would wait until a new technology presents itself where they could lend said technology in to making HL3 as fresh and as new as HL2. Can you imagine HL3 launching today, in the middle of all of these looter shooters?

VR is going to be the flagship of the old school, enthusiast gamer.

I will jizz my pants off if Broken Sword comes out as a VR game
