It doesn't look like it will make sense to play in non-VR. The systems are centered around VR motion control interactivity.

That's not how it works anymore. This is classic 2016 VR thinking. Teleporting is an option with most VR games these days, and the movement feels like other FPS, except you're inside a game world versus a staring at a flat screen. Not to mention true-life scale.

You do not need to buy the premium headset, you can get a headset for couple of hundred that will play it well enough.

If you wait for that, you might never end up playing HL1, there are some great free mods for HL1 that makes it look much nicer than that project that's been in progress now for years I think.
