So to understand this who never played Halo games besides Halo 1 campaign on PC:

It's the same as if someone adds to my beloved Quake 3 zoom-in that slows down aiming and sprint which forbids to fire my weapon? I would say Fuck them lol
Initial footage looked like it was just like adding aiming to quake -> outrage. Then 343 clarified it's just a visual redesign.

Sprint and ADS were not the issues, idk why people think they are the evil that destroyed their loved game. In fact, I would say any fps that came out today without those basic things would just feel dated.

Its the imbalance of weapon load outs and ability specs that ruined Halo.

The maps were stretched out beyond belief. A simple illusion. Run faster = larger maps, more running, less gunning. Sprint doesn't work with the pace of the first three Halo games.

It's astounding how a lot of people believe that aim-down sights (ADS) is the evolution of a hip fire style mechanic.

There is no "singularity" game design as you want it to be, both mechanics have different rules, restrictions and play-styles. To say ADS is an optional feature reeks of ignorance and clearly has not have any experience dissecting such games.

The problem here is that one style has set the precedent for most FPS games while arena-style shooters are left for the niche, and now people are justifying homogenization as excuse to be modern. It's a silly excuse that puts all games under the same genre umbrella into a universal design philosophy.

The biggest irony is that these same people believe it to be innovating and an evolution to the franchise. You should really look up the proper definitions of the term if you believe that.

What really puzzles me is why people think ADS is an evolution/revolution. Mind you in its current form I can live with it; but here's the problem.

ADS is not what makes COD or Battlefield fun. ADS became popularized in WW2 shooters because it was a "realistic" mechanic. It mimics real life weapons.

Call of Duty is fun because of the small maps, killstreaks, relative ease of gameplay and the very low ttk. You can play it in 3rd person with basically glorified hipfire and it is still enjoyable. The gameplay linked is MW2 third person; you don't ADS here. While pressing the ADS button reduces the reticle size and zooms in. It is still subject to the accuracy penalty that hipfire receives, albeit to a lesser extent.

Battlefield is fun because of long range encounters, large maps, vehicles, and combined arms combat. You can remove ADS and change the way the hip-fire works and the game would still be fun because ADS is not its defining trait.

Iron sights are a devolution in terms of game mechanics. You are forced to use it in most modern shooters or you'll get a accuracy penalty. It'll slow you to a crawl and it obscures your vision.

It doesn't have the penalties in this game hopefully, but it's still a backward mechanic.

Now the question is sprint. Will 343 slow down normal walking speed to make people sprint more? I personally think sprinting is stupid. Just up the normal walking speed. I don't want to damage my analog stick by repeatedly pressing it just to gain speed.

Go take a look at what happened with Halo 4's online multiplayer population after it was turned into COD (shown here). Then come back & tell us that.

I agree fully. If 343 has any sanity left, they'll cater Halo 5 to the hardcore fanbase of past Arena FPS games like Halo 2 & 3.

Otherwise, the franchise as a whole will join other shooters like SOCOM as a result of chasing the COD money.
This should be in the OP, because it's the truth and a hard cold fact.

I jokingly told a guy tonight while playing Destiny, that maybe you could throw Prophet's Bane like a spear. I don't think it's just the sword with a name, that would be lame.

Personally, now knowing that its just a visual change, I am cautiously-meh about it. Now it just rubs me the wrong reason that they changed canon to chase a minor visual style
Well apparently automatic weapons still hipfire, even if weapons are linked to Spartans' helmets, physically aiming your weapon sights is still a viable skill in future military training.

So, ADS for the sake of ADS, that disgusting sprint garbage to break more maps and AAs by default.

Games gonna blow...
Oh look, someone who doesn't read. AAs don't exist anymore. And ADS doesn't exist either. What you're seeing is a cosmetic change and the BR works exactly the same as it use to, except now you just see the gun while zoomed in.

Well it is not the SAME functionally. There is an ovious transition animation and the BR uses a red dot.

So it takes longer to scope in, the scope distance is lessened, and canonically the MC is using some gadget he has no real need for (a red dot scope).

It is not as harmless as people are painting it. It seems rather... misplaced even if it is not "functionally" different. (It is actually functionally different than before).

AAs do quite clearly exist. Calling them "spartan abilities" and giving them to everyone changes absolutely nothing about how bad they are for Halos gameplay. Sprint, thrust and what ever other garbage they thought up were never and will never be needed in Halos gameplay. Ever.

ADS does in fact exist and for the sole purpose of existing and nothing more which begs the question, why bother? especially when there are canonical reasons for it to not exist.

Its a valuable skill of course and of course Spartans will be trained in doing it properly, but its unnecessary when the sight up-links to your HUD. And for a Spartan who is trained to treat their armour as an extension of their own skin, it makes zero sense for them to do it when suited up. The Armour is an extension of the skin and the armour integrates with the weapon to show what the weapon sees. If you dont have to lift you're weapon up to your head to see through the sights you gain a speed advantage over your enemy and a Spartan will always take any advantage they can get because they have been trained to do so.

Canonically the only solstice of the situation is that automatic weapons still hip fire. But changing canon for rifles and semi-automatics is annoying and to me it screams against everything I know about the Mjolnir Armour System and its integration with its external tools.

Granted I'm the far extreme when it comes to following the Canon.

Why is it that ADS instantly means something is ruined? I remember when that sort of thing was seen in a Serious Sam 3 trailer, and people acted like SS was being turned into CoD. And then the game came out (mostly) fine. It's gotten to the point where the awful kneejerk overreactions are spilling into other threads. This is ridiculous.

Obviously because ADS instantly equals CoD and CoD is the anti-christ of gaming.

Sooooo what's the problem then lol. At the end of the day, H4 was liked by the people who like Cod as well, they should be catered to. The more options for players, the bigger the potential audience.
The thing I loved about Halo was that it played differently than any other multiplayer shooters. Sprinting and ADS just feels too samey to me. There's nothing dated about not having sprint in a game, that shit is not needed and ADS is definitely not needed in here. I enjoyed Halo 4 more than most, but still I think there is room in this world for different feeling multiplayer experiences. Can't properly judge until the reveal tomorrow and actually playing the beta myself, so I will reserve judgement.

but that's the problem, H4 didn't have a large audience because it mostly died out as soon as cod came out, and all the old players didn't like the game because of these new "options."

Playercount in H4 clearly showed that only a very minor group of people actually liked H4 multiplayer. Halo fans dont want CoD elements in their Halo, CoD fans prefer playing the real CoD.

I expect Halo 5 to feature a great deal of customisation when it comes to multiplayer. I think both types of gamer will be able to play the way they want to play.

No matter what they do, if it doesn't play like the Halo everyone knew and loved, people will complain. Maps need to be changed due to the increased movement, so there's no way they can properly cater to those that want sprint and those that don't. This catering to the COD audience by every FPS shooter out there is ridiculous. They all basically play the same now, let COD be COD and let Halo keeps its identity. I hope they are able to pull it off, but if Halo 4 is any indication they probably wont. I'm just glad the MCC is out tomorrow so I can go back to the best multiplayer experience I have had and still has not been matched by any modern game.

maybe it just meant that halo fans moved on to other games when the halo developer moved on?
80 pages of sprint+ads hate in one day clearly shows that Halo still matters to people and they want classic Halo.

Many fans hated the new features in Reach, nearly every fan hated the new features in H4 and still 343i think its a great idea to put modern-military-fps features in Halo... People go nuts about MCC because of the return of classic Halo MP and still they dont get that Halo Fans want to play Halo and not CoD

ADS is cancer, it does change the gameplay and makes shooting from the hip a useless mechanic. I know its cosmetic here thank god, but COD/Titanfall gunplay/melee is vile. One hit melee from the front, terrible unskilled positive reenforcement bullshit , hate hate hate COD

I think you need to chill and wait until we know more about the gameplay. They already announced 4v4 and no loadouts which is great news. I don't want to have Halo 2 with current gen graphics. I don't mind the ADS being different in this game as long as it is just for looks and is no different than hipfiring.. meaning it is not copying COD(the game didn't invent ADS lol). The implementation of sprinting IMO has to be done when you have larger maps than you did when Halo 2 was out
