Halo Infinite Developer Has No Interest In A Battle Royale Mode

Looks like Halo Infinity may not include a battle royale mode.

From Comicbook.com

Speaking during a recent 343 Industries-hosted Mixer stream, leads Jeff Easterling and James Bachici were at one point asked about a battle-royale mode in the upcoming Halo game, a quesiton they've likely been getting pounded by since the game was announced earlier this year.

To this, Easterling replied: "I'll tell you right now, the only BR we're really interested in is Battle Rifle." For those that don't know: Battle Rifle is one of the more iconic weapons in the series.

Missed opportunity IMO.

Although in fairness there's not a lot that could add to the genre within the Halo IP context.

Halo's typical much smaller play spaces and sheer lack of character / weapon variety wouldn't make for a very fun BR game anyway.

Seems pretty shortsighted, the different character classes and types could have been pretty cool in a BR setting. Instead we'll get the bland and now stale halo mp

Maybe they'll get around to it in 4 years, like with fixing the MCC.

It's funny to see them buck following trends when they did that with halo chasing CoD.

So fed up with battle royale now... it’s getting to the point where I wouldn’t be surprised if Mario comes out with one... such a boring mode as well. Either you’re good and last the game, or shit and spend 99% of the gme just... doing nothing

I don't think it's a missed opportunity, I think it's not following the crowd and trends. Trends with CoD are what got them into the multiplayer debacle that was Halo 4, they came back with Halo 5 following no trends and executed brilliantly in the multiplayer.

By the time Halo Infinite comes out I'd expect that Battle Royale hype will have subsided dramatically, the game needs its own identity, not the identity of everything around it.

The way he worded it, it doesn't seem like they are completely ruling it out yet. It's just not on their list of priorities right now.
Not every game needs a battle royale mode baked in just for the sake of it.

I always wanted there to be a spawn system in Halo in which we use ODST drop pods. It'd only be for game modes like Invasion or BTB though.

So while I'm happy they aren't chasing the trends, BR seemed like the only chance of that happening. Bummer.

I hope this remains the case. If sales aren’t up to projections I wouldn’t be shocked to see if announced after to try to ignite revenue.

I think this will sell very well tho, so no problem

Being close minded to things isnt a positive, neither is shoehorning a mode into a game but adding a BR on top of whatever already exists shouldn't be seen as a negative. I love COD BR mode and I'm happy they added it. Growing up as kids all we ever wanted was a "hide and go seek/manhunt" type game and that is what we have been getting with these BR modes.

We will not talk about the launch content of Halo Infinite until we're ready. I haven't watched the video so if I am misinterpreting the headline as "'Halo Infinite is launching with/as a Halo Battle Royale mode" that is still not the case. You can probably make your own Battle Royale mode in Forge even right now though. It's a mode not a genre. And all the variants out there now are in my opinion quite radically different from my perspective. Apex vs Fortnite is chalk and cheese - one focuses on movement and map traversal and the other on building and budgeting. Like CTF. BTB Super Fiesta (for example) contains a lot of the shenanigans and emergent fun of that kind of large experience but big sandbox modes are not Battle Royale any more than Oddball is CTF. The launch modes for MP are not 100% defined and are subject to change till quite late in the process - but Battle Rifle will still be there. So you can have BR. But are we interested in big social modes with loads of organic shenanigans? Yes. Specifically A blimp full of survivors heading to an Island after a (metaphorical) lecture from Beat Takeshi? No.

We are NOT doing this as of now - and no plans to -- but Battle Royale could be made for any of the Halo games in MCC or 5 with some content and scripting additions, because it is a mode. It would have limits based on each engine. I'm pointing that out to be clear that it's one of the ways we think about gameplay possibilities rather than a single direction for a title.

that's a really naive take from stinkles, and a goddamn shame

i hope this isn't the general attitude inside 343
What do you mean? Genuinely curious because I didn't pick up on anything bad in that post, but maybe I am wrong.

My take-away was that they don't focus on BR, but if you want, you can makr it. Which, if true, I think id the best view on it. They want Halo INFINITE to encompass as many modes as possible, and not judge what people want. But they are not going to make BR for you. Sounds sensible to me.

Forget Battle Royale, people have made many weird contraptions including fucking Gundam inside Halo with Forge.

Something like Battle Royale is very easy to create in Forge.
