Halo: Reach |OT6| There Are Those Who Said This Day Would Never Come

Shake Appeal said:
I could swear I read someone around these parts predicting unforeseen consequences like this...

Im pretty sure we all predicted the problems. Much earlier than you did lol and im pretty sure we all planned to play zero bloom with faster speed + movement and no AA's. Thats why the playlist 343 put out is so damn infuriating. The problems are so obvious and yet somehow that playlist doesnt have a classic gametype.

No doubt the guys at 343i have been brainstorming for awhile now as far as coming up with a practical way to deal with the quitting issue in MM but what about the other players that are forced to partake in what is otherwise a lopsided contest?

For me if one and/or two of my teammates drops out for whatever reason I simply have no intention of spending the next 10 minutes or so of my time enduring a cluster**** of a match. So I will not hesitate to move on to the next game which I think is more than reasonable when trying to make my MM experience as enjoyable as possible.

So I find it a bit unfair that players in my position get slapped with a temp ban for simply avoiding an unpleasant situation that was basically beyond my control. In Halo 4 I would very much like to be given some kind of surrender option or at least not be penalized for leaving a non FFA match that (by way of crooked team numbers) has obviously gotten out of hand. This has been a major hindrance to MM since the dawn of Halo 2 and I'm absolutely fed up with being made to feel guilty for opting out of game that has clearly and unjustifiably put me at a distinct disadvantage. /slight rant

People who are harping on the ZB types: play at least a game or two on the settings Booshka made for customs. The problem with no bloom and limited movement should be obvious. I'm hoping they're just starting with changing a couple things as to not skew the data off the bat, then adding more changes in as time goes on. Even 85 could use some freedom of movement .

Does anyone feel like that sometimes, maybe 10-15% of the time, in ZBS, that your bullets miss the target or don't do any damage even though you're aiming directly at someone?

Connections aside... there are definitely times it feels like the pistol freaks out when hammering on the trigger in ZB types. It feels like the animation is buggy. I don't seem to notice it as much with the DMR.

Alright, I have three gameplays of the ZB Objective gametypes up, they're pretty long though so yeah.

I agree with Devo, if they bumped up the movement speed to what we were playing in customs the playlist would be a lot more fun, regardless of zero or 85% bloom.

Nvm, i get what your saying now. Still just a case of AA's being a crutch its not exclusive to evade.

I'm actually getting less annoyed with evade being an "evasive" lulz maneuver and more annoyed at the fact that on a map like asylum, it gets a person half way through the damn thing in one go. What's the point of killing all of the enemy dudes and taking a flag to your base only for them to be able to run right back up your ass with evade?

NeoGAF's smiling token!
Evade wouldn't be so bad if it was just a side roll and not a spring activated device with which you can catapult yourself across the map.

Agreed. It'd make more sense too as a side lunge, since we've seen spartans do such things in cutscenes.

Evade revision option 1:
- You still roll like normal, but at the end you're motionless for a brief second.
- Camera movement isn't affected - you can still look around and shoot, you just can't walk.
- If you have the charge for a second roll you can do that, but again you're temporarily stuck in place afterwards.

This still allows you to:
- Dodge grenades.
- Perform the dreaded shotgun/sword combo.

But it opens you up to attack and doesn't let you use Evade like a souped-up sprint.

Evade revision option 2:
- Roll like normal, no changes to movement.
- Add a pause between the end of your roll and when your weapon is usable, similar to a reload but not quite as long.

Allows you to:
- Dodge grenades
- Quickly move across the map

But you can't evade and immediately use a sword or shotgun.

(Of course, I'd rather just restrict Evade to Elites, especially since that's possible without a TU. It's the Elite equivalent of Sprint and balanced by their larger hitbox.)

Thoughts on new bloom:

New bloom is like Viagra for Reach. I’m donging harder, shooting straighter and playing longer.

I feel like I’m playing Halo again.

In normal bloom, the reticle grows too fast and takes too long to shrink. Both of these problems are fixed now. In the Twilight Trigger Range — the mid-length range where I’m unsure whether I should spam the trigger or pace my shots — pacing is rewarded more often than spamming with the new bloom.

This is perfect for vanilla Reach and Big Team Battle.

Thoughts on zero bloom gametype:

Someone call a doctor: It’s been four hours, and this thing won’t go down.

Zero bloom is perfect for the blainer who wants to dong all night. There’s no doubt about accuracy or longevity.

But in order for this to go into regular matchmaking, the Needle Rifle and the Pistol need to be removed. With one to two men on the update team, it's the quickest way to get this into matchmaking, and it frees up time for other fixes to Reach I'd like to see (Banshee nerf, Revenant glitch fix).

And keep this as far away from Big Team Battle as possible. 4v4 is the sweet spot for ZBS.

With 343 touting the return of classic CE gameplay (or something close to it), why not angle a zero-bloom playlist as a classic Halo 2 experience? It would be a great way to feel out the interest in Halo 2 multiplayer for future HD rereleases.

Use the settings people here on GAF have made. They are damn-near perfect. I cannot overstate this enough. I would be torn between playing the new vanilla Reach and GAF-tweaked, Halo 2-like zero bloom. I want to strafe, jump and run like a Spartan-II again. It’s just fun. The ZBS GAF customs were the first time I had fun with Reach in months.

Thoughts on the TU Beta playlist:

343 should correct the lack of gametype information given to players.

Here’s my suggestion to fix that:

Separate the TU Beta into two playlists: new bloom and zero bloom. Separating the two blooms into different playlists adds clarity to voting, it gives increased space for custom-made variants (like GAF's ZBS variant), and it opens up more space in the gametype titles to inform people what they are playing.

Be as specific as possible in the gametype names. This is an experimental playlist. It’s a beta. It doesn’t matter if the name sounds stupid. People need to know what they are voting for.

In addition to that, create a new splash screen that informs players what is offered in both playlists. If you have to create two screens, do it. People will only have to deal with them once, and it will ensure that the feedback gathered is as accurate as possible. Be sure to include the names of the gametypes offered and what settings are different in each one.

And for the new-bloom playlist, please offer bleedthrough and non-bleedthrough gametypes. Name them “No Bleed Slayer” and “Bleed Slayer.” One of the few things I love about Reach is knowing where I stand in a fight, and the addition of bleedthrough takes that knowledge away. It’s frustrating to die from a headshot while my shields are still up. At the very least, keep it out of vanilla Reach so my fellow scrubs and I can enjoy the game.

Didn't Shishka add that under his watch?

Though the state of objective games in Reach is especially weird since Jeremiah made the amazing Team Skirmish playlist in H2. Excuse me whilst I go off and reminisce about how much fun that was.
Loved Team Skirmish. :)

You get to see my horrible rocket skills.

There was a person from Europe in there, and I'm pretty sure MeLo was from Mexico/Puerto Rico, he just didn't want to die, ever.

As someone who's knowingly played with Puerto Rican connections (bf's pals), I feel sorry for them. Their internet makes eurohosts look wonderful. =/

Yeah, I have a few friends in Puerto Rican and whenever they pull host, they eat shots like it's their day job, and when they don't, they complain about dropped shots constantly. So glad I don't live there.

HAHAHA. Thank god for being in the middle of nowhere.

Also going a bit OT here but it is kind of Halo related in a six degrees of Kevin Bacon sort of way. If you haven't tried the demo for Orcs Must Die do so. It's made by the guys at Robot Entertainment who took over the running of Halo Wars once Ensemble shut down. It's honestly fun as hell. Going for about 15 bucks on XBL and Steam. It's available for preorder now on Steam and I think is out on Xbox live.

And with that back to our regularly scheduled Halo chat. lol

You sir are the sauce that smacks of awesome.

The game play was definitely faster. Sprint is much more balanced with faster kill times. I like it... a lot.

What were the opinions of those playing Blinding? KC say much?

lol connection was definitely fuzzy

Dong: To demolish, destroy, humiliate, dominate, own bad kids.

Bad Kids: Kiddies who think they're the greatest player in the world of the game who really totally suck and can even be beaten by someone as bad as I am.

There's a huge Orcs Must Die vs. Dungeon Defenders war on the DunDef forums. It's pretty funny. :^)

Anakin said that they won't implement it for Orlando, but Providence is a possibility (and that it'll either be bloom or no bloom, no inbetween,) and Elitest was going "This has to go in as soon as possible," after every game. KC was pretty quiet though, think he just wanted to get some games in and then go over it with guys in the office, but I didn't hear complaints out of anyone, so I'm assuming everyone enjoyed it, I know I did.

Raven, you're not bad. :>

Oh I am. I don't deny it. I hate precision weapons and prefer to die with my AR and usually a Needler at my side. LOL I embrace it.

Most of the comments are said in passing in the general forums, but there are two threads (first thread, second thread) dedicated to it.

I still need to pick up OMD and see how it is. I was looking at the screenshots today, and it looked enjoyable.

It is. It's very action packed but the ability to place traps and set them up is just fun. If you really want to see a good chunk of gameplay check out the giant bomb first look which is 30 plus minutes.

And maybe limit it to one roll per use.

Just remove it. It was designed for the Elites, works well for them in the large Invasion spaces. It does not work with the spartan models on the 4v4 spaces.

I hope not. Why do you want such a shit? Halo Legend like is okay, but a real movie will never turn out good.
A movie based on Halo: Cryptum would be awesome though. Still I totally get why people would be apposed to a Halo move, because nine out of ten times Hollywood rips the source material to shreds.

It's what was thought of instead of saying "rape" all the time. Dong sounds funny, and doesn't come with all the emotional scarring of rape.

I'm a little surprised they think about not finishing the season with bloom and would look at Providence as potentially ZB... that's pretty encouraging and says a lot about initial thoughts.

I was also surprised that the pistol wasn't picked up more, particularly around Ring 1/Ring 2.

I know testing like this can be a bit wonky due to everyone essentially being randoms... and not teams playing teams. People were all over the place during the game I watched - but the game is so much faster. Decisions have to come quickly, and Sprint actually compliments ZB.

To me, it looks like it takes what MLG wants and makes it better. Can't wait to run some games with the settings, it would definitely make me want to play more Reach.

Although you will see the pistol picked up and used, it may not be as much as you think. It's pretty consistent behavior with very high-level players that the less reloading they have to do the better and obviously the Reach magnum has some major magazine size issues.

Okay, I actually think this is a really good idea. A DLC map pack that targets both the Living Dead and Team Classic players.

The Reanimated Map Pack

Turf - Keep the human setting, but modify the aesthetic into a run-down section of the city at night. A post-apocalyptic feel would be perfect for zombies: broken windows, trash everywhere, a burning car wreck or two. No friendly Superintendent here, just static on all of the screens.

High Ground - Swap the original human setting for a 343GS swamp environment. An aging Forerunner building (think Delta Halo) at the high end with glowing plants and swamp water down at the low end.

Waterworks - The cave environment from Halo 2 was pretty great for zombies, but this time give the middle section a Flood-infected look similar to Isolation.

I guess it would have to be released in the Spring. A small 3-plots/FFA map, a medium 1-flag map, and a symmetrical BTB map. If they absolutely want to stick to the same rules about 360 maps, replace High Ground with Terminal. Either way, tell me you guys wouldn't buy that in a heartbeat.

I like this a lot. I would love for more maps with moody visual aesthetics.

With how protective Microsoft is over the Halo movie I doubt we would see a case of the source material being ruined.

Yeah... I can see that, but it's also pretty consistent behavior with very high-level players to grab whatever power weapon is available. If there's an advantage to use something, high-level players use it. The pistol dominates the DMR in close combat with ZB settings... In and around Ring it's going to be a force.

Why do you want that? I imagine the areas of Cryptum like the Art of Sparth. A movie will never reach this quality well, so no.

The Hollywood process in a very tricky thing, they say wonderful things just to sign the contract but then turn into a ugly relationship. I have no doubt Microsoft/343i will keep a keen eye on on the movie, but the skeptic in me thinks somebody will overstep their boundaries and totally ruin it.

I really like the story, it feels personal but also grand in scale. For a first movie though, the main character should be Master Chief or he should atleast have a big part in the movie.

Maybe not Cryptum but a Fall of Reach, First Strike or Ghost of Onyx movie would probably do well at capturing the book since those books seem like they can be adapted to a movie easily.

Also I really want to see the Ghost of Onyx ending with Kurt in film, that shit was epic.

We're learning, Xbox Live. Now if we can just stop calling bad things "gay" and bad players "f*ggots"/Jews, I'd be impressed.

I doubt a movie would be directly based off one game or book, and more likely be allowed to craft its own story in the universe that is in cannon with the other medians. I just really hope they are still perusing a film, as there is a huge market and want for it. Halo deserves to be fully realized as a feature length production, to be allowed to come to life.

I have not read Fall of Reach so I'm going off the game ending, but would the ending not resonate with people who don't know Halo lore?
