Opinion Handsome men and beautiful women in video games are a good thing and you shouldn't feel ashamed for supporting it

Wrong. Attractiveness is average, basically a 7-8. So if you judge handsome/attractive as greater than a 6 then the majority of the world is attractive. Ugliness is a minority. The issue with looks is a lot of attractive people get fat which masks their looks and gives the false impression that there are more ugly people in the world.

Both of these images resemble the average male and female face across the world. All are pretty/handsome with regards to their race.

Games that chose to assume "Normal" people are ugly are doing so with no regard to reality. Normal people are pretty.

BTW, Netherlands, Brazil, Lebenon, and Ukraine got it fucking going on man. Straight smoke shows up in those countries. US is full of girl next door types it seems.
WTF happened in Samoa?

Totally agree. The trend that has taken over every aspect of media, that characters have to be as unattractive as possible (especially women) is sickening. Thank you for this thread. More of these, please. We need to balance out the body shaming going on over at REEEsetera.

People are actually ignoring the fact that:
A - Only women are affected by this. We still have a lot of shirtless, handsome looking, buffed guys in gaming like we ALWAYS had.
B - More and more we have masculine looking women (square jaw lines, short hair, small to no boobs, anything that makes a women more feminine or beautiful is a "no no").

"Ah but it's for the sake of the narrative" Really? She had to be fugly to be believable? What that has to do with anything?
You can't have a obese Nathan Drake jumping around, that's for the sake of narrative. (the devs even played with the idea)

We all know what audience the game developers are trying to cater to, but some look "ashamed" to admit it.

This is a quote from the Mass Effect Andromeda/new Bloodlines 2 writer. Real fan working on the industry. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

We are entering a dark time for gaming. It will be flooded with one sided politics/agendas.

Thank god I have a huge backlog to work through and some still decent Japanese/European devs to look forward to.

to me you can have both and it's what we have currently
People who want all the attention for themselves and their views denying content for the other part are problematic on both side in this case.
You can like beautifull/average/ugly person and want to play games with only that in them but that means you accept the compromise coming with it being you will not play everything.

^ None of them are ugly . My only issue with the recent trend is characters are deliberately made ugly just to satisfy the SJW thirst
You have a tall stick with huge teeths a small goblin dressed like it's coming out of underground warefare and an idol. Sure if you wanted to make an accurate cast in real life 2 of those wouldn't make your cut for protagonists.

So women can only be Rogues?
Did I say or even imply that? Did you read what I was quoting?

No, they can be anything. It only becomes a problem for me when some people decide ugly buff women are the realistic default for combat and everything else is "unrealistic".

Especially since tough women can be beauties as well. They don't need to look like men.

Jesus christ, this is like an Anti-Ree post but just as annoying.

Wtf is happening to this place.
Reading both pages it appears that returnal could be extremely fun and the best exclusive this year but it wouldn’t matter because the females design is ugly and therefore not worth buying. An ugly character shouldn’t stop a game being fun. It’s embarrassing.

many attractive faces are similar to a combined average. But most faces don't look like combined averages, most have deviations here and there, the combined average smooths out those variations.
Even ugly people can beautiful... on the inside... or something
That is true. But they have to have innate resilience to mistreatment. People tend to treat them differently, especially the uglier they are. And in schools many kids can bully them for their looks too. Without resilience, they might become bitter on the inside.

The point of averaging is to find a common middle ground. If the middle ground is attractive then that means there are enough attractive people to not only offset the unattractive, but go beyond in a population. If it was equal then the faces would look like 5s not 7-8s. This skewing is significant IMO. Obviously its not perfect science given they are using computers to average stuff but if we were to get rid of obesity I firmly believe that the model would hold true. Attractiveness is a majority.

As I have said before, your view on this is going to be different depending on where you live. I live in a college town with a large university. There are 7-10s freaking everywhere in this town like you wouldn't believe. Its honestly hard going shopping with my wife. Thankfully she notices them as much as I do so I can play off the window shopping as, "hey babe, can you believe what that girl is wearing?" She likes to laugh at the ridiculousness of current college fashion. After 7 years of marriage I know she has to have noticed, thankfully my wife is nothing but confident.

Most people are moderately attractive. But small differences can significantly increase attractiveness.

I don’t care how they look TBH. I just can’t stand when ppl cry about women not being supermodels. I’ll let designers make whatever they want and I’ll make my own decision on how good a character is. Make them hot, make them ugly. I don’t care. But I won’t complain with either
I feel the same way, but it does get irritating to me when I notice a trend (one way or the other). Like, oh, this developer only makes ugly chicks anymore, then there's this other developer who only has busty, scantily clad women in their games. I wish character appearance was a more even and logical/contextual application, and not a reflection of the developer's political and cultural beliefs or sexual inclinations/depravity.

"quick, mobile, sneaky, athletic" sounds like going back to the days of +1 Dex/-1 Str garbage in games for picking a female character.

A person who has been training all life as a soldier, knight, barbarian whatever is going to have muscles and scars and is going to wear gear that fits the profession. Its unrealistic if not and I'm not inherently against that. Lets just see it applied equally and we get to see more accurate women (like we currently see for men) as well as more twinky men with no muscles and wearing just a thong or the like plus more fat guys as protags.

Go all the way, basically.

honestly, I find the character in Returnal to be really off putting, like really ugly, to the point I’m likely not going to buy the game. I think it’s one of the worse character designs in any game in recent times.
I really have to agree here. She makes my face tighten up when i see her. Maybe they can tint the visor some.
If based off a model, im sure the model looks better than that.

Looks like she was intentionally made to look really, really bad.

How is making women less feminine improve the game in any way? Legit question.
And hey I'm not asking for supermodels, but what they did in Control was really necessary? The actress is a beautiful woman but they try their best to remove the feminine features. How does that improve the narrative?

It only sounds like being salty or jealous about other people's look.

The core question is why are people using games to validate themselves?

Gaming has already been flooded with woke politics and agendas. It happened when the gamergate controversy kicked off. Sadly I don't think the industry can be saved at this point, all we can do is wait for a crash and play older games.

If a beautiful DDD cup character can make someone feel bad just for being in the game, how does it make them feel when they do a headshot, stealth kill or run someone over with a car?

that was different friday movie GIF

Maybe let games be games and don’t connect them to the reality all the time. If everything was realistic games would be boring.

Just don't compare games to movies , different kind of entertainment platform . Thanks :messenger_winking:

The concept of how people look like is just as irrelevant in that then in games. The comparison in that respect is fair. You didn't need to have some Brad Pitt looking model to enjoy Breaking Bad, you won't need to if Breaking Bad was a fucking video game either....

I'm not sure why being a game suddenly mean he needs to ripped with a six pack.

You are being disingenuous in this thread if you don't think traditional media of TV, movies, and even the fucking news hasn't propped up beautiful people to sell their products and gain viewership

Never said that. Simply that its not the main point of many artist regardless of mediums. Of course folks on CW and Twilight want to have sexy looking actors, that doesn't mean that is the fucking goal of all shows and films and suddenly is a must or necessity.

physical attractiveness is engrained within our minds

Thats nice but everyone doesn't create art with that purpose.....

I don't care that she is ugly, but why is she so old? She looks like at least 50 years old woman. That's not good age for space explorer. Also why her neck is so freakish long?

The probably want an older character as she is an astronaut. It might also have to do with the story as well. They probably didn't want to go in kiddy Gundam we have a 15 year old in a mech spaceship thing lol

How is making women less feminine improve the game in any way? Legit question.

How is making women sexy and big breasted improve the game in anyway?

what they did in Control was really necessary?

If they want to have their character look that way, I have nothing against it. That is what they are going for as maybe they don't want that look. They probably want her to look like anyone off the street or someone you'd see in real life or something.

The actress is a beautiful woman but they try their best to remove the feminine features. How does that improve the narrative?

She probably fit what they where looking for from what the main artist already created , but they still had a certain look premade. Not all artist use the default exact way a person looks in real life that is used for the model. If the person is too short, that is changed, if the person is tall and the character they are making is short, that is changed etc. So if they had a look and decided they wanted her to look more so like anyone you'd see off the street and not like a Maxim Model, that is their choice of how they want the character IN THE GAME to be seen.

Not every character is made 100% exactly from the model.

It only sounds like being salty or jealous about other people's look.

Ok..but do you think that when they made Nathen Drake's model and clearly the actor doesn't look 100% like the game, that it was done cause they are what? Jealous or?

Maybe someone created the game model of Drake and they simply took what they wanted from the real model.....

Its not anything personal and its not some secret conspiracy. As a persona that is an artist myself, I fucking do that all the time. I'll take the eyes from one person, I like the hair from another person and the pose of someone else.... that doesn't fucking mean I'm "salty or jealous" of the person being referenced.

I might be referencing only a few things that I want.

Gaming has already been flooded with woke politics and agendas.

Ok but you could argue they always had that ability on both sides..... We can argue that with books, we can argue that with comics, we can argue that with film, shows......soooo we can argue that with games. That has likely always been the case. Think of the most "woke" person or think of the most "right wing" person that might be a creator of any art form, do you believe they just starte to exist out of nowhere?

It happened when the gamergate controversy kicked off.

I disagree greatly. Think agian about the most woke game developer, they didn't just magically get mo woke lol. You simply now perceive more as "woke" then prior. You telling me if Fear Effect released as a brand new fucking game in 2021 you wouldn't say it was "woke"?

2 lesbian girls fighting bad guys?

Folks would have been like "woooow" wokeness doe. So I want you guys to know, as an artist myself....I didn't just magically be like "now is the time fo da wokeness in my work". Ideas I have for work have existed for years and don't really change that much based on left wing or right wing ideas or anything weird like that. I simply think some feel when they NOW see a game with a gay person that its trying to make some message and might not be anything remotely like that.

I don't think the industry can be saved at this point,

I disagree. Make your own fucking game, stop making it sound as if someone is stopping you. That is the same mindset we've seen from this whole wokeshit in the first place. Woke females be like "Boooooo women should be represented this way or that way" ...orrrrrrrr make your own fucking game.

That applies to you too man. Stop with this weird shit like you can't make your own game suddenly. Make what you want if you feel that way.

Maybe let games be games and don’t connect them to the reality all the time.

or allow them to be what ever the creator wants them to be. We can have both. We have woke CW shows with da fine girls and we have shows like Breaking Bad. Doesn't need to be an either or.

I like scifi and fantasy stuff, I also like House Of Cards, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Nip Tuck etc. If I can like all that, we should be able to have that variety in gaming.

The character doesn't have to be beautiful or hot, just visually appealing in whatever way they manage to do that...

Ugly characters that also have no visual appeal to them won't make your game "equal", just shitty and miserable to look at.

Geez really, are we pulling that off now? Are we that blind on how westerns portray "women" nowadays?
Why the hell aren't the guys looking like average Joes then?

"Holy shit we can't have shirtless Kratos in the snow. Is he canadian?" Compare him and how Atreyus is dressed or Freya.
No one questioned that, right?

Depends on the game.

You are referencing a mythical fantasy game about a guy that kills gods....

Why the hell aren't the guys looking like average Joes then?

and

That is simply based on a title per title bases.

What does Fantasy have anything to do with Shirtless guy in the snow when EVERYONE ELSE (beside the guy who doesn't feel a thing) is covered top to bottom?

If it was a theme the women in the game would be barely dressed right?
A good one is MK11. Women in the game have either square jaws, dressed up to their chin, no long hair or all of the mentioned.
Yet guys go shirtless again.

And hey, guys are buffed and shirtless since forever. No problem with that, it's a game.
But women in games are shamed to have anything resembling femininity in the west for a while now. Why?

To be believable? Is this how women look in the US nowadays? If that's the reason, I feel sorry for you guys.

God of War being a fantasy game very much answers why, you're talking about a person that literally is not a mortal.... You are also talking about a game where you can control what the character wears, You are also talking about a game where the markings on his body have something to do with the narrative.

So I'm sorry but all of that is simply dependent on the actual game there's a reason why everyone is not as powerful as him or not depicted the same as him.

You're falling for their trap, they want you making these comparisons to try and reframe the argument with them defending art. Don't fall for it, it's not the real problem. MK can do their shitty designs, make women into men or feature ladies that fell off the ugly tree and smacked every tree on the way down. SJW's love that shit, let them have it.

The real issue is that they also hunt down and destroy any game that features sexy ladies from ever getting out above obscure niche titles. Senran Kagura, a beloved series with an established fan base, dead because of Sony's SJW policies. Every iteration of Ivy from Soul Caliber results in a tirade of hit pieces by puritanical SJW bloggers. Nier Automata gets lambasted because the man just loves his ladies. Street fighter saw outfits censored and fan service removed, wonder why? Remember the Overwatch butt pose? Tokyo Mirage Sessions? Final Fantasy covering up Shiva? Xenoblade Chronicles removing the boob slider. It's just been a brutal era of censorship, championed by these self righteous pricks.

Seriously doubt that game has a hollow narrative filled with misandry, female supremacy, and all sort of victimhood totempole ideas.

Had that game being woke, the game would have featured two ugly masculine buff females, and shown how all men are stupid incompetent or evil. While being filled with a statistically unusual number of lgbt, which all happen to be virtuous hollow characters with no real description bar their sexuality. It might also have taken racism against whites, and painted religious people in a bad light too, for the full 'woke' experience.

I see anime getting hit unfortunately by the censorship bar for all the pedo shit alot of it peddles.
