Happy 26th Birthday Rockman!!! (& Rockman X 20th anniversary)

That's right, 26 years ago the first Rockman for the Famicom was released in Japan (12/17/87) and 20 years ago the first Rockman X was released for the Super Famicom (12/17/93).

I wish I could celebrate by getting X4 on PSN...

I did a playthrough of most of the Mega Man games this year, including the X games. I even went back to play Mega Man X7 earlier this year, for crying out loud. I replayed Mega Man X4 as part of a thread challenge this year, and still found it to be my favourite X game.

Capcom's celebrating X's anniversary by releasing a pile of CDs, but what are any of you planning to do for it this year? Granted, despite the X series becoming more about Zero and less about Mega Man in terms of narrative, I still find the series synonymous with X, at least.

I might play something Mega Man X-related later today when I get home. I have every X game now, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Edit: Actually, I was thinking of replaying Command Mission earlier in the year and I didn't bother to do it.

i'm actually surprised its only been 25 years... seems like it's been a longer

but then i remember how many sequels they'd crank out in such a short amount of time. makes it seem longer than it really was

Holy shit, Mega Man X came out 20 years ago o_O ...I feel old :(
And this thread is both sad and awesome (sawesome?).
Great OP too.

This is hard to watch.
It hurts us all. :(
Don't worry, he's with good people.

You have no idea how happy Mega Man/Rockman's inclusion in the next Super Smash bros. made me, especially since they really perfected his appearance/animation. A lot of care/care definitely went into the production, so it's all the more pleasing to see.

I can definitely see him being my "main" when the game is released.

Best game of 2011

...Oh wait

Hopefully Capcom will keep making bad IOS games, run out of money, and a quality company can pick up their licenses.

Still waiting on that 25th anniversary celebration/news.

...

This thread reminds me that my yearly playthrough of the different series is massively overdue.

The 25th anniversary passed that fast huh...

Happy 26th though. I lost track of how many MM games I replayed this year, but I never get tired of going through them again.
Only "main" MM titles I've yet to beat are X7, X8, and the three Starforce ones, so maybe I should get around to those.

Wonder if this was a conscious choice, then! So say, fellows with more knowledge than I on all things Mega, can someone tell me when was the starting point where Capcom stopped treating Mega Man like one of their main stars? Did a particular game bomb so hard that they refracted from the franchise or what?

It varies among franchises.

X series - 2003 or 2004, whenever X8 was released
Classic - 2010
Legends - =(

The problem seems to be that within the past decade or so Capcom didn't find anything that could be milked to their satisfaction. Even when the X series' renaissance performed modestly at best or when the Zero and ZX series flew under the radar, they had the power of the Battle Network series' sales to see them through. With Star Force, the spiritual successor to BN not taking off in the same way, the only thing to come close recently was Mega Man 9 and 10, and apparently 10's sales were such a precipitous drop that Capcom went into "the west hates magaman" mode. Keep in mind that Capcom has weird expectations for their games.

So it's hard to say it was a particular bomb, as the Mega Man franchise has suffered several bombs already. I think it was what I said above and their Westernization fetish.

Happy birthday, Mega Man!

Here's my little collection:
I also have Mega Man 2 and 10 on Wii, and Mega Man 9 on the PlayStation 3. I also used to have the PC version of Mega Man X4, but that disappeared, and I couldn't find it.

I'll play Mega Man and Mega Man X today to celebrate!

Complete Mega Man V for GB? **drool**

Yup! Great condition, too. I've had it since I was a kid.

Anyway, I started playing Mega Man on my NES a bit ago...already at Wily:

I forgot just how easy the Robot Masters are. Yellow Devil will probably kick my ass, though.

Edit: Ugh, my dad came in asking for a favor right when I got to the Yellow Devil, and when I got up to help him, I accidentally disconnected my NES...which means I now have to replay everything all over again. Heh...
