At the risk of seeming ridiculous, let me say that the true revolutionary is guided by a great feeling of love. It is impossible to think of a genuine revolutionary lacking this quality.

Jean-Paul Sartre: "Che is not only an intellectual but also the most complete human being of our age."

"The black is indolent and a dreamer; spending his meager wage on frivolity or drink; the European has a tradition of work and saving, which has pursued him as far as this corner of America and drives him to advance himself, even independently of his own individual aspirations."

"The episode upset us a little because the poor man, apart from being homosexual and a first-rate bore, had been very nice to us, giving us 10 soles each, bringing our total to 479 for me and 163 1/2 to Alberto."

Yeah, no.

Yeah, no.

Thankfully he grew up and rejected his past.

For those of you that worship this man:

http://www.biography.com/people/che-guevara-9322774#rise-to-power-and-death

Since his death, Guevara has become a legendary political figure. His name is often equated with rebellion, revolution and socialism. Others, however, still remember that he could be ruthless and ordered prisoners executed without trial in Cuba. Guevara's life continues to be a subject of great public interest and been explored and portrayed in numerous books and films, including The Motorcycle Diaries (2004).

I went to che's tomb on holiday in Santa Clara a few years ago, was a pretty interesting place. No cameras allowed in or anything. A guard who had an AUG looking assault rifle absolutely bollocked my ex in Cuban for trying to walk into the mausoleum without taking her baseball cap off first.

Less people have died from Cuban politics in 50 years than under Obama's 8.

I dunno, people who generally despise Che have a huge hard on for right wingers, so I was only assuming.

it would be a dumb fucking assumption. im super left wing but Che is no one to idolize. He was a racist, homophobe and a straight up murderer. He carried out mass executions for Castro among other things.

Yes all of us who hate Che are right wingers. The world is binary.

I hate him more because he does have some approximation to my own politics and he was a terrible murderer.

People die in Civil Wars?

Shocked!!!

He personally went to Africa to help them in their fight against Europe. He's doing the whole Racist thing backwards, I guess.

This thread will be closed and maybe people will feel the wrath of the mods.

It won't end well.

I'm sorry to dissapoint you, but I'm just a filthy Finnish liberal. I just don't happen to like racist and homophobic murderers.

Pretending that any historical figure can be neatly categorized into "evil murderous scumbag" or "golden immaculate idol" is dumb. They're people.

However, some are much more of the former than the later.

The difference being you can make a happy birthday thread for Obama, or the many other US presidents/Western leaders who share a responsiblity for the deaths of quite a lot of innocent people, without it devolving into rabid negative backlash by people who in all honesty probably aren't actually that familiar with their actions.

I'm not saying Che was a great man either, I don't know much about him or the Cuban revolution. It's a fascinating subject for me at the moment though, and I'll be sure to do some reading on it in the future.

America is home to a lot of Cubans, or their children, who were forced to flee for their lives. Backlash should be expected. It'd be the same if someone posted a "Happy Birthday Andrew Jackson" considering how a lot of American Indians loathe the man.

Yup, that is the only alternative to not idolizing Che.

Seriously? What's next, a happy b-day thread for Stalin and Mao?

Well, people like to celebrate Hitlers birthday every year...

I'm sorry, I am that guy.

This thread is odd, it's like it exists to highlight the fact that some history is rarely completely examined, and many facets of it are left willfully ignored.

What? We're not allowed to point out when some historical figure was evil?

Opposers should be sent in front of a firing squad, in honor of Che.

That wasn't my intention, i despise Che as much as you guys do, the dude was far from an example and an all around asshole.

I'm just pointing that not everyone hates him, and that will be the main discussion in here as opposed of OP's intentions of a circle jerk.

One got their power as an elected offficial. The other supports dictators in revolutions, killing any who might get in the way.

Just ask any of the Cubans who floated from Castros Cuba to Florida over the last 60 years how they feel about Che.

People like Che and Castro are why the Cubans are such huge Republicans in areas like Florida.

People old enough to lived through Fidel grow up hating any form of government authority because it is easily manipulated. I can't fault them or blame them for thinking that.

I don't understand your post. I never said Cubans were democrats, why did you use "actually"?

Oops! I'm posting on a phone. It's a honest mistake.

It was a supplement to your post. I agree with you.
Ah, :p
