Hardest Mega Man by only using Megabuster?

I want to try this. Mega Man 1 is considered the hardest Mega Man, but i don't think is the hardest by just using Megabuster. I finished every title in the franchise, but i never tried this and i guess is time to beat this challenge.

Well, i guess i can use weapons when is absolutely necessary, but at least i want to finish a Mega Man title beating every robot master without special items.
Now there's an achievable goal.
One I'm personally terrible at. I just like cheesing bosses with Metal Blades/Pharaoh Shots/Beat.

The enemies that you need the Crash Bomb in MM2 are immune to the buster, as are the final bosses of MM2 and MM3.

Probably one of the first 3. The actual stages are the menace with MM1 more than the bosses. Buster only boss wise not sure what would be the hardest.

Somewhere between 4-6 one of those games is actually impossible to beat with the buster. Forget which.

Oh man. Like I just mentioned in another thread, I play these games Buster only, no charged shots or boss weapons (except when I have to, usually against a final boss in the X games). So I can comment pretty extensively on this.

Hardest to Easiest, Classic series (Haven't played past V unfortunately):
MM1
MM5
MM2
MM4
MM3

X series (never bothered to finish X7 or even play X8):
X6 (I absolutely loathe this game)
X2 (Serges...)
X5
X3
X1
I have never played through X4 as Mega Man. True story.

Unfortunately can't comment on Zero series since I mostly stick with melee when possible.

Also - overall the classic series is MUCH harder to Buster-only than X.

EDIT: Moved X2 over X5. Purely because of Serges' second encounter. Ugh.

From the NES classics, definitely 1 because of the fortress bosses alone (and maybe Fireman). I remember 2 and 3 being relatively easy with the exception of Quickman in both games, but 3 was worse for that battle because the Doc Robot is just so big that it's much easier to hit him while trying to jump over him damn it >___<

Wow, thanks man! so it seems MM1 is still the hardest after all.

I find 2 way easier than 3. Maybe because I've played that one so much? Also 3 has crippling slow down on a couple of bosses which can make things trickier.

Also technically you can't finish MM 1 with just the Mega buster. You need to use that magnet platform thing late on.

Putting aside cases where you have to use boss powers, probably 1. Not sure which Megaman had the insanely difficult Wily fight (7 I think) so that may have the most difficult castle. I only managed to do 10 buster only.

I'd imagine it'd be MM2, as it has Quick Man. It's hard to avoid him, so I guess you may end up relying on an E-Tank and trading blows?

I am pretty sure the final boss of MM 4 can't be beaten with only a buster.

Same in Mega Man 3 I think.

Defeating all Robot Masters should be do-able I think though.

That's a hard challenge. I always exploit boss weaknesses. I think Mega Man 5 could be done with only the mega buster, but it would be pretty hard.

I've played 2 so many times with the Metal Blade, that Buster only becomes harder because I instinctively do things that I CAN'T pull off without the Metal Blade. Really weird how that works, and I guess it skews my ranking somewhat.

Also - I think someone mentioned Quick Man in 2, he was a pain.

I usually just bust out the special weapon/charge shot if it's mandatory. No point ending a playthrough just because something literally isn't possible with the lemon shooter.

One is the hardest game to beat Buster only. Elec Man, Yellow Devil are both really hard to beat with the buster. Clone is no joke either.

Shadow Man is hard to beat in three. Quick Man in two. Ring Man and Dive Man can be hard in four, but not too bad. Crystal Man has a bit of a janky pattern, and it can take a bit to learn Wave Man, but the rest are dead simple.

I don't know if the yellow devil can be hurt with the mega buster. Also in MM1 when you have to fight 4 bosses in a row without health pickups. That part would be hard. 3's doc robot stages would be pretty hard with the mega buster only as well. I'm sure the buster does only 1 damage to some robot masters as well, so it's going to take a lot of fighting to take them down.

I find the yellow Devil fairly easy with the standard weapon. Once you have your jumping pattern down. You shouldn't really take a hit. Fireman is the one that always gives me a hard time in MM 1

Fire Man is the first boss I ever beat in 1. Hard as hell if you want to beat without getting hit but you should win the battle of attrition pretty easily if you just shoot and jump.

You'll need to disqualify MM2, you can NOT beat the game with just the Buster.

This fucked me over so hard because I would play it with a Game Genie and infinite health as a brat, and then run out of Bubble Lead ammo during the fight.

There are several parts of MM2 you flat out can't beat without the proper weapon. Like the turret room boss fight which needs Crash Bomb to destroy the walls blocking them off.

Having done this recently and excluding those two Mega Man 2 bosses, I would have to say Mega Man 3 hands down. None of the main bosses were the problem, but those freaking Doc Bots! I basically nearly gave up on the Quick Man one.

idk why anyone would do this since boss weapons are really fun
megaman as a series REALLY isn't that difficult, it's not nearly as difficult as games like ninja gaiden

Additional challenge for those of us who have played the games a billion times.

I guess, but what I'm saying is at least for me the series has been about fun and not challenge. For revisits I typically change boss order, but not using boss weapons would just make the games less fun to me.

I find beating some bosses with only the mega buster as a fun thing to do. Sometimes the weaknesses finish the battles way too fast and you are not able to experience most of their patterns by doing so. I usually only use buster (or charge in later games) in all levels except for some boss fights. I find it more satisfying to hit the buster fast than use any boss weapon when playing.

Upon playing the collection I gave myself a challenge this time to not use any E Tanks in any boss battles. Which sure changed the pace of some multi phased willy bosses.

What I did once to balance these concerns was play through Mega Man 8 using nothing but special weapons and no Megabuster. To add to the challenge, I also chose to not use boss weaknesses either. It led to some fun experimentation. Beating the first boss was the hard part though.

The challenge can be part of the fun too! An additional alternative that I like is the "rogue run". You can use any weapons and items you gain but only have one life. Mega Man is a good series to always mix up challenges like that.

That sounds awesome.

I guess I see what you mean.

Mega Man 1 is a stupid game to begin with and going buster only does you no favors, so it's definitely that one. Doing everything else that you're allowed to do by going buster only (Bubble Lead, Crash Bomb, etc.) is manageable.

Mega Man 2 is not hard, all of the bosses have easy patterns (Crash Man, Quick Man.) Heat Man definitely takes practice, and Air Man is very difficult to do without getting hit (though not actually difficult, if that makes sense.)

Wave Man is one of the easiest bosses and I fight him first in Mega Man 5.

NES Shadow Man takes a lot of practice but remember to maintain your distance and be prepared for a long fight, Spark Man can also be super annoying due to the terrain of the room. Gemini Man is easy with enough practice

Mega Man 4...the ones that take practice are probably Drill Man, Ring Man. Dive Man, remember to avoid doing high jumps because you'll get fucked over by torpedoes or Dive Man moving under you.

Mega Man 7, I don't bother with the Wild Coil, it's too annoying to use. Final fight is a pain anyway.

Mega Man X6 from the X series is the obvious candidate from that series. If you ramp up the difficulty for X5 things get painful, especially certain boss fights

Reading that part about Air Man reminded me of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opADNvgeZYY

It is also at least in part to being the worst made. It's not horrible, but fuck Ice man's level. How's this sound for "fun" randomly moving platforms that are shooting bullets out, can glitch so you just fall through them randomly and everything is slippery. I've gotten past that section without using the magnet beam to just make my own platforms and skip it, but I never feel skilled, just luckily the game decided to let me do it.

The only Mega Man game I've ever beaten using only the Mega Buster was 9 and that's only because it was one of the 50 challenges. In that same run, I managed to defeat the Twin Devil without taking a single hit. The whole game(buster only) was a hellacious challenge, but it felt so good to complete it. Totally worth it!
