Has there been a summer movie season to beat 1982?

John Dunbar

correct about everything
If we limit it from May to September, 1982 seems to be pretty tough to beat. Just look at this stuff right here (picking the best here, so not the full release list):

May 14
Conan the Barbarian

May 21
Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid

May 28
Rocky III

June 4
Poltergeist
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

June 11
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

June 25
Blade Runner
The Thing

July 2
The Secret of NIMH

July 9
Tron

July 16
A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy

July 23
The World According to Garp

August 13
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
An Officer and a Gentleman

August 20
The Beastmaster
The Thing and Blade Runner released on the same day? Already the best summer. Very balanced, too. The whole year was also very strong since outside that list there were Porky's, First Blood, 48 Hours, Sophie's Choice, My Favourite Year, The Dark Crystal, Tootsie, Gandhi and The Verdict. 48 Hours, The Verdict and Sophie's Choice were also released on the same day, so that's probably pretty high on an all time stacked release days-list.

I included The Beastmaster for all the kids, wink wink nudge nudge.

there are many, many others, but 1982 was definitely a great year, although full of turds. I love Tootsie, probably my favourite comedy of that time

Yeah, 1982 is often recognized as one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, years for genre cinema.

Although 1999 gives it a run, (it's probably better, overall) but only in year-to-year comparisons. 82's summer is better, definitely.

edit: I don't think 84 measures up to either 82 or 99.

80's were an amazing decade in film. So much great stuff from Rob Reiner, John Hughes, Spielberg, John Landis, Ridley Scott, Stanley Kubrick, etc.

80s were on some next level shit.

I mean, based on all that, I have a hard time arguing against 1999. But 1982 is really close.

From what I remember, I saw all of these in the theater:

Poltergeist
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
E.T. The Extra Terrestrial
Annie
The Secret of NIMH
The Dark Crystal
Tootsie
Airplane II

Saw pretty much all the others once they came out on HBO or VHS.

Seeing the full list is pretty amazing. Some awesome movies that year.
