Have you ever lived or worked with someone who went on to commit a serious crime?

Sorry for the morbid thread.. I was just sitting in my place and thought to myself "on the off chance that one of these guys is a serious crim i have yet to identify them."

And like, after kicking my spidey senses a few times to no avail i got the idea to ask around GAF - have you guys ever lived, worked, studied, been around someone who subsequently committed, or was revealed to have been committing, serious crimes?

Could you tell?

i knew a friend in school who was jailed for smuggling drugs

and couple of years ago a co worker went to jail for taking bribes

also knew someone who was an addict and used to rob stores to buy drugs and was busted for shooting a cop

finally a friend introduced me to a forex broker and i invested with him and in the end it turned out to be a ponzi scheme, thankfully i went in early and got my money and made some good profits before he stopped paying people and was busted and jailed, i always laugh when i remember this motha fucka he scammed millions from people and disappeared and people where offering a lot of money for any tips to find him and someone wanted to kill him before the police catch him it was crazy

Yea man I grew up in a bad town. Have a friend who died in a shootout with cops while he was my college roommate (he, obviously, was not attending uni at the time), another who went to jail for murdering a marine but got out early and is now basically a drug lord, one of my best friends from high school did an six year stint for armed robbery, etc.

Edit: six year stint, forgot he got out early too

Guy who lived across the street from me growing up at my grandparents(actually had the same last name as my grandparent. We were the white ones, them the black ones in the town) went on to kill his girlfriends kid. Was like 2 years old, beat it to death.

My buddies younger cousin, who at one point I had beef with but we squashed it, robbed the Walmart with another kid who worked at the mall (kid was really talented artist, sucks) and had a girl from school be the get away driver.
Both guys got like 12 years. Girl got probation.
He got out like 2 months ago. Oddly, my sons best friend got the guys daughter knocked up (he had the kid before he was locked up) So my kid knows his daughter, I know her dad...probably better then she does cause he's been in jail 4/5ths of her life.

Old man I worked with many many years ago was found with kiddie porn. Violent stuff. He was like 60 years old, smelled, would just mumble to himself most nights. One day, disappeared. We found out later he was raided. He had asked his son to fix his PC, the son found the porn, ratted him out. Old guy got 10 years for it. Just got out last year according the 'find a pedo' website.

Not sure if this counts but two of the coolest 'gangster' bros in my late teen years (17-20 etc.. then I moved away) were rapist. They gang raped a girl at like 14. Came back to town when they were 17 and 18 from juvie and nobody really batted an eye. Coolest dudes at the party, got the girls etc.. One dated the prom queen/hottest girl in HS the other dated one of the hot daughters of that rich family who had like 5 daughters, all hot etc..

I prob could go on. Shitty North East Town. I've been stuck up, robbed, jumped, etc.. so people I know who have done time, dead etc.. isn't a far reach.

grew up poor, lots of my friends were animals

a few outta high school are in prison for murder, others lost their minds after serving in iraq, lots of felonious behavior among the formerly enlisted but no murder (plenty of suicide tho)

my closest most immediate friends are upstanding citizens, operate above board insofar as i can tell

One of my most depressing jobs had me cold calling wheat farmers during a wheat prices crisis to sell them a subscription to a totally pointless newsletter... I'm glad to report i didn't sell a single subscription... Some of those farmers were near suicidal...

Anyway my boss was some total wanker who drove a big yellow hummer, we worked from a really crap office building he just have rented very cheaply.. his wife was his secretary and she seemed rather high all the time...

One time he sat down with me to convince me to hate paying taxes - failed (my reasoning: it was never my money to begin with so why bitch about it) - then he complimented me on my tasteful paul Smith t-shirt (gift from mum, 7 years old, first person to ever notice it) and told me that he got his first sports car when he couldn't afford it when he was in uni.. and that he convinced the store owner to sell it to him with some crazy payment plan...

Anyway not as serious as some of you guys but I'm a pretty oblivious guy to these things as a rule and even i could tell that dude was a total conman...

I also was estalked by Joshua Connor Moon for a while. I'm not sure if he's actually been convicted of a crime yet but he deserves to be behind bars. He doxxed every person he saw on a forum back in the early 2010s and has gone on to be a heinous person in general. He created kiwifarms and is probably a categorically worse person than the school shooter I knew.

In my graduating high school class: 1 shot dead in drug battles, 2 others became solders in cartel, one of them I know killed a guy but don't know if they ever got pinched for it. I honestly dont know how many got busted for theft (break ins/ car theft). I recall only 2 men I have met in my life that were just the sterotype of a damaged irreparable human being with no redeeming qualities that liked to cause harm to others for their own amusement. Worked in lots of kitchens with ex-felons too in my youth, most served time for gang related crimes. And also had an ex-gf whose brother was convicted of rape and he was said he was on the run cause he was innocent. They all are always innocent, as am I. Most all of them normal every day people that just ended up doing what they had to to survive.

This was the camp counselor that turned out to be a child rapist. Sorry I feel like I've blown up your thread a bit.
Nah man, it's pretty much exactly what I've asked people to discuss :p thanks very much, i guess, hehe with great op topic comes great responsibility.. scumbag camp counsellor Jesus

buddy that i grew up with did several years for a robbery gone wrong. broke into someones apartment and stabbed the guy when he fought back. he's been bouncing in and out of jail since

unrelated to the above, we had a bunch of contractors for a job. one guy called out for a few days, came back and was acting slightly off. turns out he had murdered someone on his days off, currently in jail

Know someone who I went to school with making like $10k a week cracking cards. I remember seeing him in Walmart a few years ago asking me did I want to make some cash, I’m like nah I’m good. He tried to give me like $5k to keep just go use this fake credit card to buy some iPads. I was like 18 at the time working at a crappy help desk job 9 years ago, but it I couldn’t take the cash.

Fast forward 3 years ago he got caught with 15 fake cards, and $15k in cash and some pills, yep he went to jail. I swear poverty brings out the crazy in people, I told myself I rather be legit.

My cousin appeared on TV's crime watch in UK after commiting a load of burglaries and armed robberies when I was younger. The family did chortle that he got caught out on CCTV when he took mask off to wipe his face down.

Close friend who I went to school with, lived in the same house as, beat Halo on Legendary with(with a congratulatory high five), ended up being a pedophile. Never spoke or saw him again. He is still in prison for raping a 3 year old child. Never want to see him again. Sick.

Thats dark as fuck, that would make me question my own judgement of people

Was there any signs that he was a bit weird? Or to you was it completely out of character?

What a head fuck

His mom was a hoarder. She was super skinny and pale and her voice seemed put on. Very high pitched and meek sounding. He would seem to run his fingers down along his nose and then smell them quickly which I thought was odd but I got used to it.

We worked at a call center straight out of high school and he would drink cans of soda out of the side of his mouth. We would point it out and he said he just got used to it because the headset mic would be in his way when he drank at work so he would keep doing it even when not at work...

He was the only one of my friends growing up that loved anime too.

Other than all of that, nothing. I know it's a lot, especially the anime part. (Just kidding anime fans lol)

No. Closest I can think of it a dad of someone that I went to school with murdered someone in a love triangle thing. Wasn't someone I was friends with though, hadn't really known her since elementary school and don't know that I met her dad.

Otherwise, just some acquaintances from school that got locked up for robbery, meth etc. as one would expect growing up in a rural area. No former coworkers, roommates etc. that I can think of that had anything more serious than a DUI or public intoxication/disorderly conduct type arrest.

As a kid I was real afraid of water, so I had trouble learning how to swim. My mother found this specialized swimming instructor who could deal with that kind of phobia. He also taught children with handicaps. I only interacted briefly with him, receiving only a few lessons from him, after which I was moved to a different group under different teachers. I don't think the specialized course helped me too much, but at least the teachers were more patient and understanding. I'd later go on to get my swimming diploma elsewhere.

Years later it came out that he had molested around 100 young girls in his school. He had tens of thousands of pictures of girls ranging between the ages of 5 to 16. He went to prison for it, but I believe he's been released already.

I worked at a restaurant with a guy once.. big guy, tough, but nice enough, i remember him asking me to buy something small for him then paying me back for it, or something... seemed to be trying to be a good guy, even invited me to a Bible group (hugely awkward as I'm not religious, just wanted to be his bud and help him out, it was that south east Asian brand of Christianity that they just call "Christianity" and involved a lot of "oh lorRd"s and stuff, token antisocial dude whose only contribution was to scowl at everyone and play acoustic soulfully during their songs...i had to ask god to bless some stranger) turned out it was all compensation, as he was pretty quickly fired and the boss told me he had been stealing money from the register. Felt rather cucked.

Well yeah. Probably everybody has, even if they aren't aware of it.

My next-door neighbor slit his wife's throat then shot himself. My brother and I found her on our front porch when we got off the school bus, and called the cops. The wife lived, and still lives today.
A classmate I went to school with is currently in prison for kidnapping and rape charges.
A classmate I went to school with is currently in prison for creating and distributing child porn.
A classmate I went to school with is currently in prison (maybe out by now) for murdering his employer.
A coworker is currently in prison for rape charges.

I'm sure there's more, but that's what comes to mind at the moment.

And this was all in a town of fewer than 2000 people.

Basically grew up with a kid/classmate who was the nicest person I’d ever met. Thought he would end up a Pastor or run for President someday. Ended up frying his brain on drugs and being convicted of murder. Planned to off his family members too but got caught before he could. Now resides in psychiatric prison for the rest of his life. A real damn shame. Was one of the good ones....until he wasn’t.

You have to ask yourself how such a small town can create that much intense dysfunction.. is there a remedy? Or are small towns just, fundamentally unworkable in certain situations?

I think it's more that it's easier to pay attention to these types of things in a small town. I know pretty much everybody in town. Even if I don't know a person's name, I've at least seen that person at the grocery store or something.

In larger cities, that type of personality doesn't happen, and people have more of a tendency to stick to their close acquaintances.

The result of that type of relationship is that people may meet some horrendous person, but never know about it because they don't pay attention to that person.

Many years ago, I rented a room in a house share situation and one of the owners had serious psychological problems. He was convinced that the old guy who lived on the other side of the road was spying on him, because he'd seen him sitting in his porch chair a few times. Towards the end of my stay there, he also accused me of "stealing information". A few weeks after I left the place, this crazy guy went to the neighbors house and stabbed the old guy to death. The crazy guys wife was a very nice lady, but she worked all day, six days a week and couldnt keep an eye on him.
A guy I went to school with also had some kind of mental breakdown after a relationship breakup and tried to stab his ex-gf to death, when he went around to her place to collect some of his stuff. This was particularly shocking to me, because he always seemed very grounded, intelligent and mature (compared to my other friends and myself) when I knew him.

A guy I sat next to at a job for a few years ended up being arrested for child porn. I would have never suspected it since he seemed like a perfectly normal guy. He went to jail for a few years, got out then lit himself on fire inside his car.

Yes i worked with a guy that had a cocaine problem who went on to rape and stab a 50+ year old woman. He now has life in jail.
I've also worked with another guy that one day just *poof* disappeared from work! A week later it was in the local news paper he had just been locked for being a paedophile.

Yeah, my high school gym teacher was charged years later with multiple counts of sexually assaulting girls under 18. It was really messed up to see his mugshot.
