HD Zelda

I really want Zelda: Coffee Cafe to have an art style that is a mix between Galaxy, Gears, UC, Tetris and Oblivion (Not ES, OBLIVION).

What in the fuck would that look like

looking so forward to this. this is the type of cel-shaded game i've wanted from current-gen systems since the generation began. hope we get it. :\

eh I'd be fine with the environment but I don't want the characters to take on the "anime" effect.

I never said I wanted a WRPG (Zelda isn't even an RPG to me). I just want more than desert/forest/lake/medieval European town. I want something different

WRPG in terms of scope, huge environments and stuff. Not gameplay/visual style

They're going to stick with what they know. I used to get my hopes up every time over the thought of insane puzzles, huge detailed landscapes, decent storylines etc. Nah

It'll be fun, but it'll always feel like something that could have been way better

Yeah I guess Im responding more to the guys that are like "I want it to look exactly like THIS". I respond more favorably to those who give a mix of inspiration.
Yeah, I think its just from people not having the means to pin point what they like.

Personally I would LOVE a LOZ That looked like THIS

Mixed with THIS cartoony feel

I would really just enjoy a cartoony Young Link game where he doesn't look like Celda Link. Maybe on the 3DS :/

Forgetting about the art, in terms of actual HD games I still think Last Guardian is the best example so far of something that would work well. Just soften it up a bit and replace the boy with Link.

Ni No Kuni is a great looking game and I could see an HD Zelda taking on a look like that. But SS already kinda has that look where its a mix of cel shaded and something more detailed like TP.

Personally while I would love a huge overworld that feels like a real world where you can go anywhere I always keep in the back of my head the idea that Nintendo wants Zelda to be more successful than it already is. I remember either Iwata or Miyamoto saying they felt Zelda was too complicated and that they were looking for ways to simplify it. To me this means being even more directed, linear and casual in its approach. I hope I'm wrong but I think this squashes my desire for a deeper, more open ended game.

Perhaps the best way to satisfy both sides of fans is to continue the tradition set by OoT and Majora and release this: Mainstream Zelda installment and then Batshit insane experimental side quest pseudo sequel in the vein of Majora, Phantom Hour Class and Spirit Tracks. However keep in line more with the former than the latter two, so really...console batshit insane experimental side quest installment.

Let us bury this sad moment in Zelda history once and for all. We will forget and persevere. Like 9/11 survivors or some shit.

i want spirit tracks: dungeon attack edition. there were a lot of good ideas in that game, and unfortunately two extraordinarily awful ones.

I know this thread is more about the look of hd zelda but I figure its the best place to discuss hd zelda in general.

I just finished playing 30 minutes or so of Wind Waker, its my first time playing it in years, and I can honestly say now that if hd zelda had the same graphical style or similar but with more detail ala Ki No Kuni I wouldn't be disappointed at all. I imagine some zelda fans would want a more realistic look or something that would show greater graphical muscle but WW is just an amazing visual style. In HD and with more processing power the game would be even more fluid with less blurryness and crisper lines.

Also there is one concern I have about a next gen zelda that stems from TP and hd zelda-like games like the 3 fable games. That is that we will get larger towns and more npcs at the expense of the npcs and towns actually feeling "alive". In WW Windfall Island really feels like it has life. The npcs are all animated very well and have a fun bouncy quality to them. I think the fact that they look like cartoon characters really helps to make each npc feel different from the next. Even though they all only have 1 or 2 lines they repeat they help the world feel alive. Compare that to TP where Hyrule Town is waaay bigger but the npcs feel lifeless. IIRC many of them don't talk and for some reason they felt much more stilted. The fable games have even more large towns and even more npcs. But despite that and better AI with daily routines etc they also fail to create a sense of life, at least for me. I have a strange fear that HD Zelda will follow in this vein.

The problem with windwaker wasn't the style it was how empty and barren the world was.
They really fucked up with that.
Nintendo could've made the game an awesome adventure, with islands full of pirates, voodoo islands and lots of small treasure islands full of monsters and ghost pirates.
Instead the ocean was empty and devoid of life and navigating the boat was beyond masochistic. A windwaker with a monkey island scenario would've been so great.

Okay but what do you think about the npcs in WW versus TP? My main point was about how Nintendo handles npcs and hoping more for WW and less for TP or Fable as an outside example.

I want Nintendo to make the next Zelda an awe-inspiring display of artistic talent. Whatever form it takes to achieve that will be fine by me.

I thought it's been established a few pages back that future Zelda needs to look like Tangled.

You know this is the right answer.

That's a CG movie tho, we don't know what it would look like if it were a videogame running on PS3 level hardware. Anyways I definitely wouldn't mind having an HD Zelda that looked like that.

this has won and there are no other choices now. Begone everyone

A lot of choices here would be awesome (except that God of War one, way to show your terrible taste), but it's a shame that considering how long it takes to make a Zelda game (or how little they make them), we may never see enough entries within a reasonable amount of time that can satisfy all those art styles.

I wasn't saying it needs to look like God of War, I was just putting up pictures of notable HD fantasy games as a starting point for discussion.

I'd really like to see a Zelda with Witcher 2 graphics, a lot of blood and a very mature storyline.

That would be something.... but I really need to wake up now.

I'm curious: Why do you want these elements in a Zelda game? Zelda's never really been about "mature" storyline or violent, bloody combat. Do you really want to see a dark revenge plot with a brooding Link chopping off Ganondorf's head with blood gushing out all over the place? Or do you just want a Zelda-like game (meaning dungeons and puzzles and stuff) with such a story and aesthetic, but it doesn't have to be about Link and the Triforce?

Link kills Ganondorf in an epic way:

And when Link battles Ganon, Ganon will go "FUCK YOU, KNIFE EARS" and then Linkin Park will start playing and Link will cut himself to become a demon the size of Ganon and go

"NO, GANON. FUCK YOU."

It'd be like a dream come true!

Well, that's a good question. ;-)
See, first of all: I really like mature storylines. OoT was great (really loved it), WW was not so great and TP.... well, I never saw the credits. I really think the series has to move forward and as it seems this will not happen with SS. Moving in a more realistic and mature direction would be one (of many possible) steps forward - IMO. You could include a love story between Link and Zelda and with that make it more emotional. I would really have some (IMO!) great ideas for a potential Zelda-story. I always thought that there is room to tell a really epic story in Zelda - LotR-epic-style I mean.

Oh, and I would throw out many things. Ganondorf would be one them. Seriously, how often do you want to fight him? Triforce as well. It just feels so aged. I can't believe so many people can enjoy the same thing over and over again. I would leave the dungeons be, make them more varied and not built-on exactly the same though. Ah, I have way to many ideas to explain them here. Hardly anyone would agree with me anyway. ;-)

Just a personal preference here. No one has to feel offended so please calm down.

Wind Waker did have a mature story, just as much as OoT. Link even stabs Ganondorf in the head at the very end. Zelda is all about capturing that sense of childhood adventure and wonder. There will be some serious moments but never an adult story.

I hope you never get to direct a video game/movie/TV show/Youtube video...

Funny you're refering to "copping of head". See, as far as I know Zelda trailers have often Conan - The Barbarian - music in the background. You know what happens at the end of Conan? ;-)

See? It's logical Zelda has to move in this direction. ;-)

bzz... just kidding.

I can understand the desire for a more mature storyline, but I don't have to sympathize with it.

I don't think the key to improving Zelda is to make it a different game and a lot of the "this game needs blood and a love story and a mature storyline" is born mostly of teenage fantasies of what a mature story means.
