HD Zelda

I never understood why some people were so against a steampunk (or more industrial) Zelda
It's just not an aesthetic that appeals to everybody. If you don't like it, it makes you apprehensive when someone suggests it should be poured over one of your favorite franchises. I for one like the more magical/medieval aesthetic much more than the industrial elements (steampunk as a genre and setting is one of the least appealing to me in general, only topped perhaps by modern/urban like GTA) and therefore would like Zelda to stray far from this direction. Stuff like the steamboat (PH), steamtrain (ST) and factory-worker gorons (TP) felt really out of place and grating to me anyway. Like having sexy short shorts in a Mario game or something (hi Super Mario Strikers).

Take the concept art for Skyward Sword, and apply the semi-watercolor painting style to a steam punk world. But seriously where is my steam punk Zelda game?

Sorry, as much as I like steam punk, Skyward Sword looks exactly how I want it to look. I absolutely love the style. The watercolor-esque environments are fantastic. The only thing its missing is a higher resolution and a little more horsepower to further bring the world to life. I seriously cannot wait until E3.

I really hope that Nintendo doesn't take another whack at a photo realistic world just because they have a system that can handle it.

With the proposed specs by IGN, it better do it at 60fps and with higher resolution textures.

We'll Zelda games are usually 30fps so I expect Cafe Zelda to be 30fps with incredibly graphics and 1080p. EAD will be able to get a more impressive larger world if they go 30fps rather than 60fps. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge supporter of 60fps gaming and I would love to see Zelda Cafe run at 60fps. I just don't think that's the direction the console Zelda team goes. I was fine with Twilight Princess Wii running at a locked 30fps, I wasn't wishing it had been 60fps (although it would've been amazing).

Twilight Princess was not "realistic" by any stretch. Not like GT5 on PS3. I think it was the perfect look for the game, with some cel-shading in there that most people overlook. I want another Zelda like Twilight Princess only far bigger, with more enemies on screen. An overworld populated by lots of living things, NPCs, enemies, things to interact with, etc. I'm not liking how Skyward Sword looks, it's inbetween Twilight Princess and Wind Waker. I'd prefer one direction or the other.

Steampunk doesn't really fit with Zelda though it would be amusing:

Alright this is awesome:

I think Zelda already has the right amount of steampunk in it. Steampunk is meant to be steam-esque interpretations of modern things, not older, fantasy elements that you see in Zelda. The technology in Zelda is already steampunk in design, though.

As much as I didn't like ST, I liked what they attempted to do with the world. I'd love to see a console Zelda set in New Hyrule, maybe 50 or so years after ST so there's a bit more noticeable technological development.

Epic Mickey HD is what really needs to be Steampunk:

I don't know what this picture is from but it would make an awesome artstyle for a game:

Is that actual cel-shading, or is it just "not realistic" and everyone thinks it's cel-shaded because they don't know the definition of the term?

I haven't played the game in ages, so I dunno. U:

That's an example of the modern-day "nerd-cool" steampunk, though. There are much more valid and interesting examples of a steampunk aesthetic that don't involve goths running around in non-goth attire.

all I ask for is some technology advancement. kinda like how Fable 3 had advancement.
This is pretty much my feeling, too. Whether it's steampunk or not, I'd just like to see the world actually advance in technology, even if those advances are entirely unrealistic because they involve magic.

I agree. As far as technology in Zelda goes, I'd like it to remain based more historical technology coupled with fantasy elements. Older medieval, Greek, Indian, Roman, Renaissance, and Chinese technologies are great for Zelda's setting because they are removed enough from the modern world to be interesting, and fantasy aspects can be applied easily in design and operation. Up to steam-era technology is about as far as I'd be willing to comfortably go. To me, any further than that, and it seems to encroach on science fiction. (Again, to me, and just a personal opinion.)

Technological advancement would be kind of neat though, especially if they went for a kid Link/adult Link scenario again, or utilized the passage of time somehow.

I'm also torn about graphical "styles" to Zelda. If they went a more realistic route, a blend of Assassin's Creed, Skyrim, and Tera might be nice. If they went with a more "animated" look, I love the cel shaded style (in the vein of like Ni No Kuni or that Naruto game that was brought up before...I can't recall the name). However, it might also be cool to see some sort of painting technique applied to the entire game, like a watercolor or oil style.

I wouldn't mind the idea of a Zelda with more advanced technology as long as it fits with the magical fantasy element of Zelda. I'd like a story about how there is an advanced society but Ganondorf manages to destroy it somehow. By the end of the game the technology will be gone but Ganondorf will be dead as well.

This can't be qouted enough.
Those kind of people ruined "steampunk" with making it that shitty nerd-fetish.
In FFVI and Secret of Mana it worked perfectly well because it was subtle and not STEAMGOTH QUIRKYNESS IN YOUR FUCKING FACE OH SO CLASSY DERP ABRAHAM LINCOLN.

I definitely hope with the extra power of Café they properly realise the vision they had with Twilight Princess. Kinda realistic but still really stylized. I think that they should keep the kind of cartoonish looking Zelda to the handhelds.

The former.

It's pretty obvious to see that stuff like the Mirror of Twilight is cel-shaded.

This would be kind of neat in a Zelda game:

Or maybe something like this:

This guy is preparing for the movie production of Bioshock Infinite:

Eh, either go Cyber Punk or leave it as it's own Tolkien-esq style.
But, as far as art style goes, a water color ala Okami:

okami_opt.jpg

Or pencil shading ala VC:

valkyriachroniclesimage11603580.jpg

Would be awesome.

Steampunk? You'll continue to get your half-baked pseudo-medieval fantasy Zelda worlds and you will like it. Aonuma doesn't give a single fuck.

It won't sell. Being too cartoony or stylized turns off the mainstream fanbase. SS is more like TP but softer.
I completely disagree.

People who don't like WW Style don't like WW STYLE. Doesn't mean they don't like "Cartoony or stylized".

I would love something that looked just like this in HD Cafe Zelda.

Or this.

Or something REALLY different like Skottie Young's art style.

... But I HATE WW Celda style. I find the proportions and deformation unattractive. It looks far too simply and "Chibi" and I think thats why people hated it in the West. Most people don't call Mario kiddy because of it's style. Thats because it's an attractive style and actually looks "Cartoony" instead of "Chibi Simply Anime".

Long story short ... it's not stylized or cartoony that people in the west don't like, it's simply WW Chibi anime style thats the problem. And on top of that, the fact that Zelda team likes to change it's style like ever game or so surely doesn't help.

More advanced technology is the last thing I'd want to see in a new Zelda. I want to see a wilder, more uncivilized world. No towns or castles, no corny or cutesy characters, no sidekicks. Just a young adventurer setting out alone on a quest across rough landscapes and into old ruins with an occasional wise man living in a cave somewhere.

This might actually be what we get in SS, actually.
The land below Skyloft has been ravaged by war, so we probably won't see real towns just a lot of ruins and such.

Yes, I agree with this. I mostly want a huge world with gigantic monsters, castles on top of mountains, endless exploration.

I can top that. Castles on top of mountains on top of gigantic monsters. All of this on top of an even bigger monster.

Sounds like Ikana Canyon (which was awesome)

All right. I believe you, since you state it so confidently. It's just that often, people really don't know what cel-shading actually is.

I'm just as much for this as I am for technological advancement. Both are entirely valid and would (potentially) make the world of Zelda much more interesting.

Something about the way that game looked always distracted me. It's like it looks hand drawn but then it's also 3D. So distracting.

Nuh uh. Well maybe for Zelda. I like more structure in my Zelda games but I'd love more games like this. A lot of the early Zelda art was about this.

Sounds like you want Zelda to become Shadow of the Colossus or something. Zelda has always had a focus on "cutesy characters" and quaint towns. If anything a new HD Zelda will be more like the world of the Fable games and less like the Team ICO games.

Actually I want Zelda to go back to being Zelda, as in the original Legend of Zelda. It's all been downhill from there.

Actually yeah this is true, it was mostly the proportions which turned people off about Wind Waker. I personally, however, would love a chibi Zelda:

If you believe the original zelda was the pinnacle of the series then there's no point in us discussing Zelda further. Good luck with getting HD Zelda to be like the original.

What was that Pendleton Ward said an Adventure Time game would be like? Monster Hunter plus something else? Either way I like his plans.

Confidence Man is actually the only person on the last page who knows what he's talking about.

Zelda of today is no longer Zelda.
