I bought GTA5 on my Series X keen to play it at 60fps, and before I get into the main topic, what an improvement! It’s so nice to play with such a smooth frame rate after playing a good chunk of the campaign in PS4.

But I bought it hoping to sink my teeth into the online mode, having almost played the lion’s share of the campaign already. But as I’m struggling to wrap my head around GTA:O, I’ve found myself just trusting back through the campaign again, for the third time now…

I’m just lost with where/how to start? I started off just diving into free-roam mode thinking that’d be a good starting point but it was all very confusing, lots of texts on my phone with “tips” on things to do, but most of the map points I went to just seemed to be empty lobbies.

So I tried some of the other options in the online menu for specific activities, but just ended up more confused, getting dropped into the map with a timer ticking away and not much of an idea of what I should be doing.

Am I doing it all wrong?

Is there a good place to start?

Is it actually worth the time investment?

I should mention that I don’t intend to spend a huge amount of time with it, and I’m certainly not going to spend any money. But I thought it might be a fun new way to play in the city.

at this point don't even bother. it's a mess. wait for GTA Online 2 with GTA VI.

if you want any enjoyment out of it you NEED to spend money.

I have played a lot of gta online. And honestly, I would not recommend to start right now. it is extremely grindy. All the systems in the game are not well done and confusing. At least you are not on pc, where every second player is a cheater. If you have a lot of free time and or want to spend some money on it, I would say stay away from this game.

A lot of the points on the map aren't particularly popular.
Have you got Prime? You can get some free cash to get you started by linking that over on Twitch/Amazon Gaming to Rockstar.
Probably the most fun to be had are the heists. They start small but get wilder and pay out more. Ideally with friends.
I think the first just requires visiting Lester. Others require purchasing an apartment or other properties.

If you enjoy racing, you can have a decent time with many of the racing available from the menu. I forget where exactly.
The game suffers from very inconsistent locations for these things over the years of patches.

GTAO racing is fun but it’s also a loading screen simulator to get in/out of racing and the time in-between races is too long.

Sounds like it’s not just me, maybe it’s just a bit of a pain to get into!

I was just after a fun aside to do within the game, I’ll probably just leave it.

I only got into the game because a friend explained all the systems to me, and even then it wasn't exactly an easy introduction.

I also started with it on Series X some weeks ago. I don’t like the story/missions that much (feel soulless/cringe in comparison to single player), but I like to drive around and find stuff around the map. I would recommend to buy a night club, that gives you 50.000 every day, so you get some cash. I also bought an auto shop because this is also a chilled way to get some money and drive interesting cars some time. Go to the casino every real 24 hours to turn the lucky wheel which gives you some free stuff every day.

Oh, and play in invite only lobbies only if you don’t want to get shot by random players when you drive around.

I can't imagine coming in as a new player trying to figure out this clusterfuck of a game.

Part of my love for red dead online was that it improved the formula by making things more coherent and easier to digest.

Yeah, I think that’s where I’m at.

It feels like diving into GoT, 4 seasons in. I’ve got no idea what’s going on, and by all accounts it’s probably not worth the effort.

Also with each update, the cars in that update have their physics changed. No consistency between the updates, also almost never go back to fix the wonky physics on the cars. Its like its a beta still ....

It's absolutely pointless to play GTA Online unless you're on PC with FiveM.
