There's no denying that a lot of the influence on those guys came from Swedish melodeath bands (I'm sure they'd say the same if asked). I'm just saying that the majority of the sound of that movement came from people wanting to sound like KSE as they're probably one of the biggest names from that time. At the end of the day it's just standard metal songs with a specific riffing style (lots of palmmuted riffs combined with heavily harmonized guitar leads) and singing style (the higher pitched screaming from hardcore music combined with the clean and rarely gruff singing).

Not a bad thing to strive towards though. Say what you will about what KSE inspired and what the genre later turned into, those first two albums are fucking solid, regardless of the formula they used.

Not really into metalcore, but the latest Ice Nine Kills album is pretty good. They do totally look like douchebags though.

Metalcore is a term that's changed a fair bit over the years and the older definitions of metalcore (in which something like Converge is prototypical metalcore) fit Dillinger quite nicely.

I'm not even really into this stuff, but there's no way either Converge or Dillinger are prototypical metalcore. How has no one mentioned Integrity, Ringworm, Starkweather, All Out War, Merauder, Strife, Bloodlet etc? These were the first metalcore bands, (a fair amount of them just half-time Slayer and Sepultura with breakdowns). and the stuff that influenced early Converge. Later Converge and DEP is modeled after the more dissonant stuff like Rorschach and Deadguy (props to whoever mentioned the latter), which from that is a springboard into the more modern stuff in this thread.

Metalcore has nothing to do with punk. WTF am I reading?

Modern metalcore doesn't have much to do with oldschool "punk," sure, but it has plenty in common with modern hardcore. I mean you could say the same thing with metal, how can Wormed be metal if they have nothing in common with Rainbow? Metal you can at least trace the lineage, with alot of hardcore it gets pretty muddled (as evidenced by this thread).

man, it's really sad that this is the perception people have about metalcore. this used to be such a great genre.

Duuuuude, you just took me back to highschool. Some of those bands I still consider great though, i.e. Converge, Botch, Coalesce, Deadguy. Shame it's only associated with hipsters and breakdowns now. The word "hipster" didn't even exist back then.

Metalcore is still good because every time i die, shai hulud and unearth are still around. New stuff like kublai khan, carnifex, counterparts, etc are dope too

That's a silly statement. Converge, Shai Hulud, Earth Crisis, etc. were all born out of hardcore punk.

...Those aren't metalcore bands. Well, not Converge and Earth Crisis, they're just hardcore bands.
